Smallville, Season Three (Spoilers)

The WB's description of the season finale: I had heard there were rumors of a Supergirl showing up in Smallville (esp. since Chris Reeve said the Kryptonian message revealed in his recent ep. was intended not for Clark, but for someone else, and that writer/producer Jeph Loeb is currently reintroducing Supergirl in the comics)...guess they're true.

----

A MYSTERIOUS GIRL FROM KRYPTON COMES TO TAKE CLARK HOME - Things come to a head in Smallville when Kara, a beautiful girl (guest star Adrianne Palicki) with superpowers, who claims to be from Krypton, comes to entice Clark (Tom Welling) to fulfill his destiny. Overwhelmed, Clark turns to his parents (John Schneider, Annette O'Toole) for advice but is shocked when Kara forces Jonathan to finally reveal the deal he made with Jor-El. Also, Clark makes a discovery that ultimately redefines his relationship with Lex (Michael Rosenbaum), and Clark's relationship with Lana (Kristin Kreuk) takes a final turn.

Ooh, that sounds interesting. So, um, Krypton hasn't been destroyed? Where'd Kara come from?

There have been so many versions of Supergirl through the years. But DC has pretty much promised that the current Jeph Loeb story in SUPERMAN/BATMAN will have the return of a Kryptonian Supergirl, Clark's cousin, once and for all.

So in the comics they've done different things about how she got off Krypton. One old idea is that she is just from a different area and somehow her parents had the same idea when the planet blew up (1950s idea). A recent version is that there was a small planet that orbited near Krypton where a bunch of Kryptonian settlers went off and founded a new world, and she's one of the last (or the last) survivor of that planet, which was considerably rocked or destroyed when all the debris from sister planet Krypton blew up (I think it was called Argos City, see the first SUPERMAN/ALIEN miniseries, where they first introduced this concept for Supergirl). It's so
convoluted. They'll just figure out their own version and pick the elements from all versions that make the most sense in this day and age, I guess.

Also, the actress who plays Supergirl/Kara in SMALLVILLE will also be a lead in the WB's upcoming (sounds shitty) remake of the LOST IN SPACE series. They're big on remakes -- LOST IN SPACE and then the DARK SHADOWS remake series. All this to replace ANGEL. Lame.

Anyway, apparently the LOST IN SPACE show and her SMALLVILLE guest-star role are her first professional acting jobs anywhere. I've googled and there are no pics of her, aside from that one from the Smallville finale.

Too bad about the Lost In Space thing (I mean, didn't they watch Voyager?) cause it would've been cool to keep her around for longer than an episode or two. I could easily see her as a more interesting, agressive alien than apple pie Kent. She could have been Faith to his Buffy or something. Oh well... we'll see.

Well, who knows....crappy Adam had a 6-episode guest star stint, so this Supergirl may be on for more than just 1 or 2 ep's...

Last night's ep. was pretty good but then it spotlighted the Luthors which is always a plus. I loved that Clark got fucked up and it was Lex who saved him (nice change of pace). The one thing I didn't like (and it's no biggie) was the Krypton scene... how lame and hokey was that? And wasn't the blanky Kal was bundled up in blue (or red) is the first episode? Why is it yellow here? I think the prop guy fucked up.

OK, last night was pretty damn good! Lots of shit hit the fan. It was cool to see Lionel call Lex's bluff (i.e. that Clark wasn't only trying to stop Lex's treatments out of pure goodheartedness -- Lionel knows Lex's lost memories also contain Clark's secret). Clark was so caught out!!!

Although I loved the overall plot, did the treatment equipment really have to be glowing green??? Does everything in the area have some tinge of Kryptonite in it?? This was one of Three Cheesy Things in an otherwise great episode.

Lara says "what if they don't love him?" -- a cheesy line delivered horribly by whatever actress they got to do the voice-over. The production quality for this sequence where we see baby Clark/Kal-El being put in the ship was awful. It was like a B-movie sci-fi film from the 50s...the background of the scene was like a bad bluescreen or the background of a graduation photo. Really, really bad. Shame on the production team!!! But the baby Clark was cute. This was the Second Cheesy Moment of the ep.

Third Cheesy Moment: they never told him what
his first word was cause it sounded like gobbledygook? ("Lara") Wouldn't they tell him 'you know, your first word was something that sounded like 'Lara,' darned if we could figure out what that meant...' Kinda lame....

The acting from Lionel and Lex (and even the actor who played 10 year old Lex) was amazing. You really see some moments (in the past) where Lionel seems marginally sympathetic (mostly when he tries to cheer Lex
up in a scene with no one comes to Lex's birthday party, Lex has no friends -- and in the scene where Lionel realizes Julian is dead). As usual, the best stuff in the series is propelled by Lex and Lionel, acting-wise and writing-wise. It was great to see Lex really tell his dad off in a way and intensity he rarely has before. And he says the big words to his father, namely "you don't love me" (which he didn't quite say last ep. with Chloe).

NEWS! Pete leaves Smallville!

from Kryptonsite.com, one of 2 major Smallville sites. Their spoilers are almost always correct, and this is from a magazine so it must be true.

---

Sam Jones III (Pete) Leaving Smallville

Madsci has somehow gotten an early copy of Dreamwatch #117 (on sale 4/29 in the UK, 5/18 in the U.S.) and has told us that within the magazine is a spoiler article that reveals that the episode "Forsaken" will be Sam Jones III's last as a regular on Smallville.

Judging from the episode spoilers, it sounds like the events of the episode might be the final straw for the Pete Ross character. We don't know what the future holds for Pete, but we're assuming he's not being killed.

We'll have more details on what the article said later today. (Perhaps the article says so!) We're assuming this news is for real unless the Smallville powers that be is trying to send Dreamwatch for a loop.

Yeah, I agree with the kryptonite memory tank but I didn't mention it cause I'm getting tired of complaining about it. With all the kryptonite in that damned town Clark should be dead.

And as for Pete leave? You mean he was gone already? It's been a while since I saw him for longer than a second. I think this is the best thing the actor could've done. He's been treated like crap by the writiers.

No, he's not gone already, he'll be written out in an upcoming episode. But he might not be gone permamently....it's not clear yet.

>> Yeah, I agree with the kryptonite memory tank but I didn't mention it cause I'm getting tired of complaining about it.

I feel EXACTLY the same way!! It's annoying but I'm getting tired of always saying how annoying and silly it is.

I'm sick of all the kryptonite as well, however, one could make the case that the reason the Smallville version of Earth has advanced science like that (which our world doesn't have) is because they are this rare radioactive isotope that allows them to do all sorts of odd things (and we don't).

Pretty decent ep last night, though they get a bit extreme with the "American Indian prophecy that Clark is a super-powered savior" figure thing. Cool to see major super-hero fight (if short) on the show -- against someone with **Clark's exact same powers**!!! (said in overly dramatic echo-y voice) I hear Pete's character might be written off the show. And that Supergirl chick looks pretty cute in the previews for next ep.

Nice moments with Lex here -- which Luthor grabbed for the dagger first? Rosenbaum continues to deliver every line beautiful, esp. the "Wouldn't Seveg (whatever the name was) be the hero for standing up to the alien with mighty powers who could take over the world??" bit.

Yeah, the Lex thing was cool. And it was nice to see that Kryptonite didn't play a major role in this episode and what little it did was very cleverly done (for Smallville). I also loved that Clark picked up a whole tree trunk and beat his doppelganger over the head with it. Neat!

But the best part of the show was the promise that Lana is "going to be the girl that goes to Paris". Whoo! And don't come back!

The few Supergirl shots in the teaser were great. It also seems like she'll be able to fly. I'm still a bit confused though... is the planet Krypton still around? Cause for a dead guy Jor-El sure meddles a lot? And the preview said that Kara is here to take Clark "home", which can't possibly be the shiny green asteroid field floating about where Krypton used to be, can it?

Hopefully, Supergirl will be from the bottled city of Kandor. Oh, how I long for the bottled city of Kandor...

We all feel that way - stay in Paris, Lana. Have your adventure -- maybe she comes back in the final season of the show so Clark can tell her his secret (officially part of Superman mythology that I think they'll keep) and then go off to Metropolis to become the Man of Steel.

>> I also loved that Clark picked up a whole tree trunk and beat his doppelganger over the head with it. Neat!

Yeah, this was superhero fun! And it didn't look cheesy -the special effects were decent. Why they couldn't make the shots look good when he remembers Jor-El and Lara putting him in the ship as a baby, I'll never know.

Yeah, it's kind odd that Jor-El is like a sentient living artificial/spiritual intelligence/entity/program that used to be housed within the ship (which was slightly easier to buy) but now just kind of hangs around Clark & the Kent farm (since the ship was destroyed). It's like he's doing the Obi Wan Kenobi ghost thing. Yet this ghost can somehow bestow powers on Jonathan Kent and have actual interactive conversations with people in real, present time. It was easier to believe when it seemed like recorded messages or a super-complex program coming from the ship.

And it's still not really clear if Jor-El REALLY wants Clark to be a conqueror or if it was just a misreading or unclear meaning of his words.

As for where Kara is planning on taking Clark "home," they've gotta have something up their sleeve - I'm sure Krypton is still good and blown up. Maybe the bottle city, maybe that Argos City place/moon/sister planet that a recent incarnation of the comic book Supergirl was from....?

Pretty good ep. last night -- some shit really hits the fan! Clone Emily was just lame and annoying, but the stuff with Pete and Lex/Lionel was kick-ass. Great scene where Lex turns his dad over the feds. Good ominous scene with Lex rescues Pete from getting beat up by the FBI agent. ("I'm sure you'll do the same for me one day...")

It was actually very touching when Pete tells Clark he needs to get away cause knowing Clark's secret tears him apart on a daily basis. ("I know I said it wasn't hard keeping your secret -- I lied.") And if you think about it, realistically, Pete just got just beat up and his life threatened by an FBI agent -- in addition to his parents going through a divorce. He'd have be an emotional superhero with a veritable will of steel to not want to get the fuck out of Dodge (or Smallville, as the case may be)!

Yah, no Supergirl yet...annoying, but this ep. was interesting enough that I can wait til next week.

Oh, also, I read that after Michael McKean (played Perry, also from Best in Show and A Mighty Wind, married to Martha Kent/Annette O'Toole) does the lead drag queen in "Hairspray" on Broadway for a few months, he'll become a recurring guest star or series regular on Smallville mid-next season. Perry on Smallville full-time? Sounds like a possibility. Kinda weird.

Season finale last night! What'd everyone think?

I thought it was pretty decent. Man, Jor-El can just about do anything, can't he? Not bad for a non-corporeal spirit - he can bestow powers on anyone, even make the cave wall a portal to...somewhere else.

Nice stuff with Lex & Lionel (as always). Did you all think the Lionel head-shaving in jail was cool or cheesy? I can't quite tell.

I can't imagine Jonathan Kent or Chloe dying, or of course, Lex for that matter. Supergirl was ok...sort of one-note. I did like the fact that he came up with the "cousin" story to deflect Lana.

"This friendship is over!"

It was okay... I did like Lionel shaving his head.

And I think you're right Supergirl was very one note she very cool bits about her but quickly became robotic. And they the big cop-out... she really isn't a kryptonian but some girl the ever active Jor-El power boosted.

I don't know, all of the stuff that happened would've been really cool if I didn't know the producers of this show were totally nutless. Lex is obviously not dead, niether is Pa Kent, and I'm sure Lana and Chloe will be back next season.

With Buffy and Angel gone I really want this show to be great but... it always leave me cold.

I'm sure this has been discussed elsewhere, but does anyone think that Jor-El might actually be General Zod pretending to be Jor-El? The old raising the son of my enemy thing....

I could see that being the case since Clark seems to now be trapped in a Phantom Zone like place. Still doesn't explain how he can do all the shit he does.

It is tough love from daddy. And my bet is Clark was shivering because he is at the top of the world, in the...Fortress of Solitude. Or something like it. Clark is going to superhero school.

And Lana's new hair? Rowr.

spoilers from KryptonSite:

Added 6/15: Casting breakdowns have gone out for the role of Lois Lane! The character is set to appear in the first 4 episodes of Season Four, to "investigate Chloe's death." She's not a journalist at this time, nor is she into journalism. Her character breakdown in the casting description sounds very very faithful to the Lois of the modern comics.

Added 6/14: A new possibly ongoing character is coming to Smallville. The character is Jason Teague, an American college junior who is "charming, broad-shouldered," and will definitely serve to open Lana up a little bit. The two of them meet in Paris, and he may be coming back to the "leafy little hamlet" with her. They have a great time in Europe, racing through the Alps on a motorbike, seeing the Notre Dame, and more. (Oh, and those of you who are snarking that it'll be on a Vespa and not a real motorbike - go to the head of the class!)

- Apparently Lex is going to come visit Lana in Europe. Guess that means he'll be okay "I feel like I'm not the person he said goodbye to. I've changed so much," Lana says. One might even be able to glean that over the summer Lana had developed some feelings for him.

Added 5/28: Tom Welling told reporters at the WB Upfronts that everyone will be returning, except for Sam Jones III, who may show up from time to time in guest spots.
