Thoughts on last night's premiere (in the US, since I know the UK and other countries get 'em later?). I missed the first half (dammit!) but it was pretty solid throughout. Nice bit at the end with Jonathan powered up. Looking forward to a great Smallville season, and Chloe naked. (well, we won't get that last part, but it'd be nice, no?)

So I guess the idea is that Clark/Kal is not meant to "rule" and the whole thing from Jor-El/Terence Stamp was merely a test to see how much valor/honor he has? Like the various steps in the Joseph Campbell-type Hero's Journey?

It was certainly fun watching evil-Kal flaunt his powers, standing up to hails of bullets, beat up evil clowns and generally be a real prick. But I'm still oddly more interested in Luthor's story. Not a bad start, though.

Not "oddly", I don't think - Luthor's story arcs are often the most-well written on the show and are very often more interesting than Clark's, in my opinion. Although they've managed to make Clark's stuff a lot better (and less boring) as the show has grown.

Anyone catch last night's ep? I saw the last 1/3 of it - it seemed to be lacking in energy, somehow...

I thought last nights episode was better than the first. Lex' acceptance of the idea that he is intended for greatness was a joy to watch. I cant wait until he gets his battle-suit!

Anyone else think that the last scene between Clark and Lana seemed kind of limp? How--at that moment--would they not be saying things like:

"Wow, Lana, thanks for trying to help my parents escape from those nad guys."

"Sure, no problem. Say, who were those guys anyway? Why did they have your parents tied up? And does that have anything to do with why you've been acting so strangely?"

But no...

Yeah, the final bit with Luthors was cool. Lex seems to have taken one medium-sized step closer to True Evilization. He hugs his father -- and his father seemed shocked, unsure of how to handle a real, genuine hug. Both actors are so great - Michael Rosenbaum kicks ass, he really had that 'lost little boy wanting his dad's approval and guidance' look in his eye. And John Glover fucking rocks the house always.

How was the first half of this episode? I loved seeing Rutger Hauer as Morgan Edge. So we still have Edge knowing Clark's abilities at this point, right? Surely a thread that will be picked up in the future. But did he know Clark's name was actually Clark?

Anyone else watching this?

I thought last night's ep was pretty decent - LOVED the idea that Lex thinks HE might be the super-powered one. Very clever idea in the framework that the creators of the show set up.

Annette O'Toole, though she was kinda hot in her youth, is the weakest actor on the show, I think. She was making me laugh with her moanful weeping "Get the bullet out! Oh God oh God get it out!!" - bad, bad acting. She just isn't that good, and hasn't been very good since the show's debut. Whereas John Schneider is always great as Pa Kent, I feel.

Some other good moments in this ep - nice stuff with Lionel & Chloe (count me among the fans who find her very cute but can't STAND her new hairdo!). Next episode looks....bizarre?!? It's a special WB event cause Clark and Lana go skinny-dipping in some sort of wacked-out dream sequence and because they use music by REM??! huh?!?!

I only caught a bit of it. Clark vs the Dream Monster, more or less. Some neat effects, but I missed most of the show.

I don't stop in to Barbelith that often, but I have been watching Smallville this season (and most of the last two). I missed the dream episode as well, but I caught last night's ep and really enjoyed it. I thought it was a great introduction for Perry White. Instead of just plopping him in, they gave him some depth and really tangled him up in the Smallville web right from the beginning. I'm curious if White's big, scandalous story about Lionel Luther will be followed up on or just left out to dry.

Is it just me or does one of the joys of watching this show lie in pointing out the many flaws of internal logic each week? Why would 16-17 year old Clark be allowed to sit down for a little pep talk with White in some dive during the middle of the day? And where does Pete get new cars from all the time? I'm not sure what he was driving last night, but it was all chromed out and ready to show.

There was quite a nice gag on that theme in the first series. Whitney and Chloe are rushing to save Clarkor Lana or probably both. Whitney gets up, at which point Chloe smiles and offers to drive. As Whitney clearly has Toyota stock.

I guess you missed the episode where Pete sold Clarks soul to the devil for bitchin wheels and some bling-bling.

Fell asleep watching Smallville and I had a weird dream that I was in Samllville with a schoolbag full of superman comics and films. Lex was reading them in his mansion bitching about " I cant go evil! Not me! My father yeah, but not me!!!" and Lionel walks in yelling "Where do you get off having a battle suit?". Lana is yelling at CLarks mom "You? Of all the people they get YOU to play me??? You dont even have my hair colour!!" Pete was yelling "Where's Pete? Im not even in here!!! Just another example of whitey keepin' the black man down!!!" Throughout the whole dream I felt soo guilty!
It was sooo sureal it was amazing.

LOL!

Tonight: Jor-El visited Krypton in the early 60s in SMALLVILLE continuity. He hung out there and liked it, picking out earth as a good place for his son years later. And he even picked the man he wanted to raise his son, apparently....sounds kinda cool....

Does he get to fly? Ah, I guess I'll watch and see.

Tamayyurt
01:04 / 06.11.03
Alright, I guess he does. That was cool but I hope the writers realize that Clark now has memory of flying. He knows it's possible. He knows his father has done it... and I hope he tries. (Even though I know the show little motto is, no flights. no tights.)

Saint Keggers
13:02 / 06.11.03
He didnt really fly so much as he hovered. Clark can hover. Yay Clark, go hover just like your pappy did!!

Im looking forward to seeing where they're gona take this Luther po' house history.

Tamayyurt
19:05 / 06.11.03
Hovering is flying without actually going anywhere! And Clark can't hover consciously. He's only done it in his sleep... but now he consciously knows he can do it.

19:47 / 06.11.03
How funny was it that the fucking Cigarette Smoking Man from X-FILES was the evil mayor of SMALLVILLE?!?! I laughed out loud when I saw that actor show up!! This episode was really fun, despite one or two cheesy moments. I love Hiram Kent! (I wonder if that was a family name from the DC miniseries/paperback THE KENTS?)

FinderWolf
19:49 / 06.11.03
Also, who else started hearing the "Can you read my mind" flying music from the first Supes movie when they did the romantic hovering thing?

Last night's SMALLVILLE, anyone?

I thought it was pretty good - except for the idea that Luthor being made to forget the past 3 days or whatever takes away the dramatic impact of him seeing Clark save him from the car (again). Nice use of Johnny Cash's "Pain" at the end. Where's Pete? Give us more Pete! I just feel like he's underused and underdeveloped - a bit of a cipher at this point. Nice acting by Rosenbaum, no surprise there as he's always very good. He almost Nicholsoned out when he was going crazy at one point, but he reined it in. The singing the lullaby to the baby bit was pretty cheesy. But a nice ep. overall.

I was a little bummed to hear that Morgan Edge was behind the death of Lex's grandparents and the destruction of that tenement building. I thought that Jor-El had done it.

FinderWolf
18:54 / 20.11.03
Why would you think good, noble (albeit a bit rebellious in his youth) Jor-El would kill Lex's grandparents? I don't think even the revised Smallville continuity wants to present a Jor-El who's a murderer or lashes out in petty vengeance against those who piss him off...

HunterWolf howled: Last night's SMALLVILLE, anyone?

I thought it ruled. Even this morning that ending bummed me out like you wouldn't believe. Great use of Johnny Cash. Even TV Without Pity, which is usually quite harsh on the show, gave that ep an A.

Did anyone notice that the words that Lex said right after Edge's car rammed into Clark (or vice versa) were the same that he spoke in the "dream sequence" episode? Something to the effect of, "You've been lying to me from the day I met you. You're not even human."

My roommate was particularly traumatized by the fact that Clark just broke and ran once the jig was up, abandoning Lex to the wolves. Obviously he was scared, but once it was out in the open, Clark ought to have gotten his boy the fuck out of there. On the other hand, several minutes earlier Lex had been holding a gun to Clark's head while he was weakened by Kryptonite; Clark himself probably felt a bit betrayed, after sticking his neck out for Lex.

One wonders how Chris Reeves feels watching an episode of "Smallville" where someone gets mangled by a horse. You figure that's got to raise the hairs on the back of his neck.

It's evident that something truly awful is going to happen to Chloe. She's a glutton for punishment. Whether it be crushing on the unattainable Clark or crossing swords with a ruthless industrialist like Lionel Luthor, she is hellbent on destroying herself. I think her eventual catastrophe will set the stage for Clark's later proprietary attitude towards Lois Lane, since Chloe is so obviously the proto-Lois, as Pete is the proto-Jimmy Olsen.

And where WAS Pete that whole episode? I really feel he rounds out the cast well, not because he's the token minority but because he plays the loyal friend to the hilt.

Dude, Lana is going to have mental scars from this one episode alone that will last for SEASONS. Oh shit, being around Clark IS dangerous. Ain't that a punch in the gut: he got exactly what he wanted but really didn't.

All said, I'm really curious now how the writers are going to use these new relationships (or lack thereof) towards the larger plotline. STAY TUNED!

First new SMALLVILLE ep. is next Wed., the 14th, methinks. Called "Asylum," it's about Lex in the loony bin! And three krypto-villains! Cheers!

Damn Hunter, when I read "three krypto-villains my heart leapt as imagine teenage versions of the kryptonian villains from the superman movie... but no I figured it out it's the kryto-mutant kid of the week times three.

Last night's ep. was quite good! Good stuff with Chloe (she can really act - her crying scenes come off as real crying, not over the top 'look at me, I'm an actress crying'), great stuff with Lex, multiple assasination/mind control attempts on Chloe, a sexy villainess who may return someday (Lex is attracted to her: he has a great line like "Why is it that all the women I find compelling are psychopaths?", which he says to the villainess in question), good Clark stuff, the now-infamous line that Lois Lane is Chloe's cousin, and the revelation that at the time of the show, Lois was not interested in journalism at all, and of course the 'is he Bruce Wayne or isn't he?' new character "Adam Knight."

Oh, and Lex enlists a mad scientist/psychiatrist to help him regain his 7 weeks of lost memory - in which, among other things, he saw Clark stop a speeding car to save him (again).

Tamayyurt
14:43 / 29.01.04
Damn, I missed this episode... but from what I've read I hope this Adam Knight turns out to be Bruce Wayne and not a proto-Bruce like Chloe is a proto-Lois.

FinderWolf
17:25 / 29.01.04
It's established in his first appearance that Adam
Knight is a fake name he gives. Last night's ep
showed that there's a lot more to him than meets the
eye (although part of me says 'why was Lana freaked
out about Adam's modest hand-to-hand skills when the
hypnotic message suddenly seemed to teach Lana how to
fight well and kickbox with precision without falling
over?'). The theories on the message boards and stuff
are as follows:

1) It's really Bruce Wayne. He's travelling around,
finding himself, this would explain his extensive
knowledge of...everything and his fighting skills.
Also his sadness about his past. And obviously, the
name. Although if it is Bruce, they sure did a shitty
casting job - the guy looks not-very-Bruce Wayne-like, IMHO.

2) The producers wanted this to be their Bruce Wayne
story but didn't get legal approval since Warner Bros.
wanted the new Batman movie with Christian Bale to not
have any weird pseudo-tie-ins. So they took the plot
they had gotten together for the Bruce Wayne in
SMALLVILLE arc and rewrote it a little and made this
'Adam Knight' guy. So it was originally supposed to
be Bruce but was rewritten, and the Knight name is a
tip of the hat to that. Also, they knew the name
would make fans freak out in an endless guessing game
as to whether it was a red herring, tip of the hat, or
it's really Bruce.

3) It's not only not Bruce, but was never meant to be
Bruce as far as the writers were concerned. They're
still holding their Bruce ideas for when they get
legal approval.

But I bet the producers are having fun watch all the
speculation. What if it is Bruce, and the idea that
it's not Bruce and just a rewritten Bruce plot is a
red herring? So it's kinda fun. Though the actor who
plays Adam Knight not only is a bad actor, but looks
like he should be on a shitty show like MUTANT X and
not SMALLVILLE. His jaw actually goes out to the left
and right like some lame soap actor, and his hipster
"I don't wash my hair, my hair is all matted down bedhead"
shit is annoying.

One poster on aint it cool news said 'wouldn't it be
cool if this was Bruce but they didn't explicitly say
so in the show? like he and Clark 'team up' to fight
some menace and then at the end, Clark doesn't know
much more about the guy than when they started. at
the end of the episode, a black stretch limo could
come pick 'Adam' up to take him away from Smallville,
and you would just hear an English voice say 'Time to
go, Master Bruce' and that way it would be him but not
really significant enough to cause legal problems with
the new movie. And only the viewers would hear
Alfred's voice and see the limo pickup scene, so Clark
& the rest of the cast would have no idea who it
really was, and Clark wouldn't know he'd just teamed
up with Bruce Wayne.' I thought that was a cool idea.

I think the best part will be when Chloe stumbles upon his first attempt to make a batsuit and he spends the rest of the show being refered to as 'the freak with the rubber underwear fetish'. He then flees smallville and spends years on the psychiatrist couch never to fight crime.

Tamayyurt
21:28 / 29.01.04
Speaking of Chloe and Adam's rubber underwear fetish... I don't think Lana is right for him at all. I think Chloe and Adam should hook up (she's got that Vickie Vail thing going and I hate that everyone falls for insipid Lana). Also, I think it would be cool if Chloe asked him to help her with her Lionel Luther troubles... there's some good teenage corprate cloak and dagger stuff to be had.

FinderWolf
16:56 / 30.01.04
Yeah, Lana is definitely insipid, that's for sure...and gets less attractive to me as the seasons go on because she's so boring and annoying and not even that hot.

Apparently a future episode has something about Adam needing to take a serum to prevent him from dying (this was from a Smallville website with good spoiler info). When they wrote this they also wrote "Guess this means he's not Bruce Wayne...")

I want Molly to come back! There is an obscure DC villain, although male, named Brainwave. So that would fit in with the pseudo-Braniac/Eradicator we had at the end of last season (the scientist/language expert who got the disc from the ship burned into his dead hand).

Anyone see last night's episode? I freakin' missed it due to an appointment that went late. Was it good? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Tamayyurt
17:05 / 05.02.04
I saw last night's episode. The whole thing with Adam taking some serum happened last night, but I didn't know if it was to stay alive until I read your post. He broke into Lex's house and started playing this incredibly difficult piece on the piano without any note sheets and then they bantered a bit about Lana. He mentioned something about his parents death. I thought the serum was something like a super supplement to make him smarter, faster, stronger. I don't know. He could still very well be Bruce, but it just may be the writers trying to drag the similarities until after sweeps.
Also the krytonite kid of the week (he could see people's moment of death by touching them) touched Adam and told Lana that it's like he's already dead. Again, I took that to mean that Bruce died when his parents were murdered and he's just this empty shell running around waiting to get filled up by the Bat. But again, that could be me reading too much into it.

I was really starting to get bored with this show but Adam, Lex, and Chloe have got my attention again... now, if they can just stop focusing on Clark and Lana.

Possible Major Spoiler

Clark's dad has a heart attack
