I think that a lot of what Frank has done post-Teenager Of The Year has been very hit or miss, but Frank Black and Teenager Of The Year are both just as great as any of the Pixies albums. Really, Teenager is probably better than all of Pixies records except for Doolittle and Trompe Le Monde.

well i think i was proberly fitting into the drunkenly facetious class of poster when i made the above remark as i do like a lot of FBs solo stuff including TOTY but i do prefer all the Pixies stuff. Rizlas is right for me with his idea of intermittently good Frank Black solo albums. You can skip through a lot of dull stuff until you get to Bullit and other songs that make you go WOW!. Like that one...If it takes all night?...

Yeah, Matthew, everyone knows that Bossanova is the best Pixies album, followed by Surfer. Geez.

There's always a slim chance that I may end up with a spare ticket closer to the date as people pull out (though how anyone could pull out of this I don't know.) If that happens I'll keep you 'lithers in mind.

I've had a great time seeing Frank Black live. Best gig I went to last year was him playing solo and Pixies stuff ON HIS OWN. Despite this, I could never stop wishing it was the whole, old band up there.

As for a Glasto appearance, I wouldn't rule out the possibility. The reason we don't know about it yet is because the Glastonbury line up isn't confirmed until it's very close to the actual event. I'll be getting a ticket regardless. The festival was so fantastic last year that I must go again.

I think Show me Your Tears is a beautiful album.

My position has always been: Black Francis = Pixies = Frank Black. It's all one career, one body of work

That's hardly fair to either the Pixies or the Catholics, is it? I can't imagine either band would appreciate being viewed as merely incidental to Frank's career. Sure, he's a genius, but that doesn't mean it's all about him.

It's extremely rare that Frank writes with his band. It's all the work of one songwriter. He's gone through about three or four bands now, but it's all one body of work. This doesn't diminish the contributions of his sidepeople (especially not key collaborators like Kim Deal, Joey Santiago, and Eric Drew Feldman), but it doesn't mean that the three eras of his career to date (the Pixies, the solo 4AD period, The Catholics) should be considered to be entirely separate from one another.

Oh, toss, you cultural ignoramouse. What a twatty thing to say, honestly. "All one body of work..." - Christ, you're a pompous little shit, sometimes. Most times. No wonder I despise you so much.

Is this serious or sarcastic?

Nothing's better than Surfer.

Jesus, the Pixies gig in Dublin just keeps getting worse.
Not only are they suporting the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, one of the shitest bands ever, the warm up band are the Thrills.
Jesus. I fucking hate MCD.
On the plus side my girlfriend bought me a ticket, so they don't get my money.
Them and ticketmaster, when the revolution comes I tell ya.

So the Pixies have always been my favourite band. Without exception. And I was so excited when I heard they were going to be playing live. But the they sold out before I even knew the phone-lines were open. And now you can only buy tickets if you're prepared to cough up £150-£200. I am - needless to say - heartbroken.

I don't think this has been mentioned yet - and this might be of some use - but they're playing V2004 - supporting THE STROKES. Hmm. Saturday in Staffs and Sunday in Chelmsford. I still think there's tickets available.

I promised myself no festivals this year apart from Glastonbury. Now it appears they seem to be doing every festival apart from Glastonbury. Anyone know any different? I'm getting worried. Really want to see them in a festival setting.

Which was the album with 'Caribou' on?

Cos that was the best fucking album, bar none.

I fucking sold it, to buy naughty things when I was young and stupid and knew not better.

Bah.

It was Come On Pilgrim, which I think you can get as a double CD with Surfer Rosa.

But I never liked them that much personally, their whole schtick mostly just seemed a bit forced, David Lynch meets The Stooges, The Velvets and so on, with a brilliant guitarist, but even at the time it all felt a bit old.

My Bloody Valentine, on the other hand, if they got back together... now you're talking.

I think My Bloody Valentine could well be getting back together for some live shows, thanks to Kevin Shields' success from Lost in Translation. Read something like that in an interview in the Guardian.

NME.com is reporting that the Pixies are planning to go into the studio next year to record an album...

I'm fairly hopeful- I've seen the Pixies twice since reforming and they fucking rocked - Brixton show possibly being the greatest gig of my life... The sound was perfect, it never felt like a half arsed band- they were loving it as much as we were!

But the big question is do we want another album- the 2 tunes that they recorded since they reformed (Bam Thwok and Warren Zevo cover Ain't That Pretty at All) both sounded like the pixies i know and love- so i'm really keeping my fingers crossed.

The dynamics between the pixies and Frank Blacks solo career differ with in a multitude of ways- Kims (backing) vocals and dum dum dum bass lines, Joeys scratchy guitar play (which features on a few of Blacks solo albums) and finally Dave Loverings drumming- truely one of the bestest hardest drummers eva!!11

The idea mentioned upthread that Blacks solo stuff should be viewed as an extension of the Pixies is laughable- no kim= no Pixies! No Dave = No Pixies! No Joey = No Pixies! Black is the principle songwriter but the arrangements and performances by the respective musicians make the record.

I seem to remember around the time of the first couple of Frank Black albums he made claims that it was a concious decision to NOT sound like the Pixies- he wanted to write bubblegum pop like the Beach Boys or Hang on Sloopy. I like his first album, teenager of the year is ok but has some stinky moments (i hate headache- its so formulaic!).

Will we get another slice of Pixies heaven or are we heading for disapointment?
Are they too concious of what is expected of them and will they end up a parady of themselves (loud/ quiet/ Frank Screams/ kim sings etc...)
Any thoughts Barbelith?

If they get Albini to produce I'm in.

stoatie i reckon like me you'll part with your cash whatever- albini production would be nice- anyone more current spring to mind as an interesting collaborator?

Kevin shields could be fun, or someone big and old like Tony Visconti....

If there's a new album they may make new videos, which will be good as all their old ones are shit.... i'm going to start a campaign to get me directing one of them....

I won't believe it until Flux tells us that it's definitely, absolutely 100%, sure as eggs is eggs *not* going to happen.

Honeycomb. Smoother... On every FB album there's been a (reasonably) mellow track. It's great to enjoy an album with a number of 'em.

Go Pixies! Yay!
