"In April, the legendary Pixies will reunite for the first time in over a decade. The notoriously quarrelsome quartet have buried the hatchet, clearing the way for all four original members to hop onstage together for a world tour, according to a spokesperson for the band."

From MTV news, via Krew.

I haven't spent more then ten bucks for a show in over seven years, but I can pretty much guarantee I'll be breaking the piggy bank for this one. I shouldn't even be telling you losers, for fear of not getting a ticket.

Apparently they've been playing together for over a year, and they're all really pleased with the new stuff.

It's very unlikely that this is going to happen.

Believe me.

Don't trust it til you've got quotes from the band, rather than bullshit attributed to anonymous sources.

It's not going to happen. And it doesn't need to - Frank Black plays loads of Pixies songs at his shows. Just go see him play if you want to watch him do the old tunes.

15:51 / 14.09.03
Also: Frank Black was being sarcastic about secretly playing with the old Pixies. He was JUST KIDDING and fucking around with the guy interviewing him.

It's true thatin my enthusiasm I jumped the gun. But I think you're taking the other extreme in going from "unlikely" to "not going to happen".

16:52 / 14.09.03
How about I split the difference between 'unlikely' and 'not going to happen' and just go with 'if it ever does happen, it won't be soon'?

No word on this? I've seen offical confirmation's all over the shop. First date in Europe is apparently "T in the park".

This is an "official press release", from frankblack.net.

"THE PIXIES MAKE IT OFFICIAL
THE REUNION IS REAL

Band to Play Series of Warm Up Dates, Co-Headline Coachella Festival, Head to Europe
DVD, CD to be Released

They're talking, they're rehearsing, and they're going to perform together for the first time in more than a decade. The Pixies, acclaimed as the most influential pioneer of the late '80s alt/rock movement, and who effectively blazed the path for groups like Nirvana, Radiohead and Pearl Jam to rise to superstardom, have officially confirmed their much-anticipated reunion. The original line-up - Frank Black/vocals, guitar; Joey Santiago/guitar; Kim Deal/bass; and David Lovering/drums - are already holed up in a Southern California rehearsal space working together for the first time since they disbanded in 1993.

In April, The Pixies will kick off an 11-city "warm up" tour of North America, marking the first time they've toured together since 1992's massive "ZOO TV" in support of U2. This string of dates will culminate on May 1 when the band co-headlines (with Radiohead and Kraftwerk) the first night of this year's Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival to be held at the Empire Polo Fields in Indio, CA. The band will then embark on a European tour starting May 28 and ending July 10.

But wait, there's more. Later this year, 4AD/Beggars Banquet will release PIXIES, a DVD that features four elements: eight Pixies' videos ("Debaser," "Here Comes Your Man," "Monkey Gone to Heaven," "Velouria," "Dig For Fire/Allison," "Alec Eiffel," and "Head On;" a live concert filmed in 1988 at the Town and Country Club in London; the definitive Pixies documentary entitled "Gouge," which features interviews with Radiohead's Thom Yorke, David Bowie, Bono, among others, as well as "behind the scenes" footage. And if this isn't enough, a "best of" album with the working title "Wave Of Mutilation - Best of Pixies" will be in-stores later this year and will offer twenty-three tracks including a remixed "Debaser," "Here Comes Your Man," "Gigantic," "Allison," "Nimrod's Son," "Dig For Fire," and "Monkey Gone to Heaven."

The Pixies formed in Boston in 1986 when Charles Thompson dropped out of college and convinced his friend and roommate, Joey Santiago, to do the same. The two recruited bassist Kim Deal who suggested drummer David Lovering join the group, and the lineup was made official. Thompson adopted the stage name Black Francis and the group named themselves The Pixies after flipping through a dictionary. The Pixies quickly gained a cult following as well as critical acclaim for their signature blend of screaming punk noise, indie guitar rock, classic pop, and surf rock riffs mixed with impossible-to-ignore melodic hooks and Francis' bizarre lyrics about religion, UFOs and metaphysics - their own unique sound.

During their six years together, The Pixies released five albums on the 4AD label - "Come on Pilgrim" (1987); "Surfer Rosa" (1988); “Doolittle” (1989); "Bossanova" (1990) and "Trompe Le Monde" (1991). Experiencing particular success in the U.K. and Europe, The Pixies played sold-out festivals and received a multitude of fan, peer and critical acclaim - the U.K.'s NME named "Doolittle" the "Second Best Album Ever." The band's influence was far-reaching; U2's Bono referred to The Pixies as "one of America's greatest bands ever;" David Bowie called their work "just about the most compelling music of the entire '80s," and Kurt Cobain, who identified "Surfer Rosa" as his favorite album of that entire decade, confessed, when writing "Smells Like Teen Spirit," that, "Basically, I was ripping off The Pixies."

Tour dates for The Pixies' reunion tour will be announced shortly. "

Don't really know what to make of this so far. I know the documentary on thet dvd is shite, though. (It sounds like the one that was on c4, so I'm guessing it is. )

I was recently talking to a Boston radio deejay friend-of-a-friend about this "warm up tour." He said, seeming definite about it, that they were going to be playing a few warm up shows right at the Middle East here in town. Two days later he said it wasn't true at all.

I suppose it's fun to toss the rumors about, but I wouldn't believe really anything you hear about the Pixies till/if they actually play.

Difference being they are confirmed for two festivals. From www.tinthepark.com;

"We are weeks away from launching Scotland's best loved music festival, but we just can't stop ourselves...

Hot off the press for T in the Park 2004 are The Pixies and The Chemical Brothers!

The Pixies are reforming especially for T in the Park 2004, and you can bet we're as excited as you are. This will be an experience that many of us would never have dreamed possible and will be a truly defining moment in T in the Park 2004 music history. Their sound has influenced a wealth of acts, many of whom have graced the stages at Balado during its 10 year history. Where would we be without such signature tracks as, 'Monkey Gone to Heaven', 'Wave of Mutilation', 'Debaser' and 'Here Comes Your Man'. "

But I get your point. (Thinking; the whole "guns and roses" deal, here). But this does point to a whole new realm of possiblity/reality.

I'm operating on a "if they're supposed to be playing and I can go, I will" basis. It's not like I ever thought I'd see them, so it's all good, as far as I'm concerned.

However, I think it's past the point where this can be looked at as mere speculation. Although I did hear some things the other day about Frank Black wanting more money...

Ahhh, fun isn't it?

i would be shocked if they cancelled Coachella at this point. that's been rumored for months and is basically the event they started building the rest of the tour around.

seeing as how i'm going to Coachella, that's the only one i care about. fuck all y'all... =)

Apparently, tickets for a forthcoming Pixies Brixton Academy show went on sale just over an hour ago. Presumably ones for other British/European shows too, I haven't looked yet..

Get 'em while they're hot..

From nme.com;

"PIXIES SELL OUT

PIXIES fans have snapped up tickets for their two shows at LONDON BRIXTON ACADEMY on their comeback tour.

As previously reported, the band are to reunite for a full tour this year, which includes their first dates in the UK capital since 1991's Crystal Palace Bowl show. They play Brixton Academy on June 2 and 3.

Within minutes of tickets going on sale from 9am this morning (February 7) internet ticket shops had completely sold out both dates. It’s unknown if any more shows will be added.

If it isn't really obvious, I have really mixed feelings about this. Sure, I'd like to see the Pixies. When they come to New York, I'm going to make an effort to get a ticket. I love all of those songs, so it'd be really cool.

On the other hand, I have an intense distaste for reunions. I think that no matter what happens, they were better off being a great example of a band who knew when to end it, and had a short and graceful career.

Also I have a deep resentment for everyone who is all "Yay! Now I can finally see my favorite Pixies songs played live!" when Frank Black has been performing several Pixies tunes every night for the past five or six years. Why didn't everyone just go see Frank then? Is the prospect of hearing what he's been doing for the past thirteen years that off-putting? That's so annoying to me. I've seen Frank Black play twice. Between those two shows, I saw him perform Where Is My Mind?, The Holiday Song, Nimrod's Son, Monkey Gone To Heaven, Mr. Grieves, Gouge Away, Wave Of Mutilation, Cactus, and Debaser. This was not special. He does this every night now. But it's not good enough for most people, I guess.

Bastard. I didn't get shit.

What do you reckon the odds are of them playing Glastonbury? Apparently they'll be in Europe all the way through June and the beginning of July, so it's a strong possibility... except that, if they're booked for T already, chances are they're tied to one UK festival for the summer...

Jack The Bodiless
17:06 / 07.02.04
That was for scoobyjah, obviously. Flux, stop being a whiny prick. Seeing Frank Black live is not remotely the same as seeing The Pixies, the original line-up, play live again, or, as in a lot of cases, for the first time. I've seen Shane MacGowan & the Popes play live, and old Shane played several Pogues songs - but seeing the temporarily reunited Pogues play live a couple of years ago was a dream come true, and COMPLETELY DIFFERENT in the way it affected me.

Tell you what - if you can't be a big anough guy to turn off the snob in you for a bit and let people celebrate/speculate in peace, how about you start a new thread on whatever turgid little indie band is playing your flute this week, and leave this one alone for the people who actually give a shit?

Matthew Fluxington
17:53 / 07.02.04
Oh get off it, Jack.

Yeah, there are some obvious differences between seeing Frank play the old Pixies songs with his current band and seeing him play them with people he hasn't played with in over a decade. For one, Frank's probably going to play a more professional and tight show with The Catholics. He probably gets along with his Catholics bassist. Or at least, the Catholics bassist probably isn't a total mess.

Another difference is that Frank probably won't be playing anything from the past 13-14 years of his career with the newly reformed Pixies, which is great for all of you big fans of his work who'd prefer to think that he died or something a few months after Trompe Le Monde came out.

i wanna hear kim and frank sing together.

Matthew Fluxington
18:39 / 07.02.04
That's probably the best argument in favor of the reunion - otherwise, songs like "I Bleed" and "Gigantic" really couldn't be successfully performed again.

I think it'd be cool of them to put songs from Frank's solo records and Kim's various projects into the setlist. Some songs would be really exciting in this context - "Cannonball," "Saints," "London," "Headache," "Thallosocrassy," "Ten Percenter," "Czar," "Blast Off."

I think whether this reunion is good or bad will depend on the quality of the performances and the general atmosphere.. it could be a bunch of people playing songs they don't ever wnat to hear again with people they don't get on with.. or it could be the best thing ever. Remians to be seen.

I'm really pissed off with the way the gigs are being handled. The Pixies are only playing one gig in Ireland suporting the Red Hot Chilli fucking Peppers. The tickets are €70. It's taking the piss. €70 to see the Pixies warm up for about an hour for one of the worst bands in the world. Balls to that.
And English Summer season? They play T in the Park, not Glastonbury. Probably warming up for the Proclamers. Fuck the Mean Fiddler and MCD. They are dicks.

Not happy

I wouldn't get too bothered yet, man. Seems to be they're just testing the waters, seeing if this whole thing is even viable.

And nobody knows exactly what festivals they're playing yet. T in the park is the only one confirmed - there's plenty of rumours surrounding EVERY other festival.

But to be honest, nobody is entirely certain about anything (even the things confirmed) yet. So I wouldn't be getting too upset. If this all happens and goes well, I imagine they'll be touring A LOT more.

I was always annoyed I never got to see Frank play when he was in my town, because I was too ill.

Expecting people to follow Frank all the way just for the love of the Pixies is asking a bit much isn't it? Frank has certainly tested my patience to the limits with some of the nonsense he's come out with. I entirely sympathise with any Pixies fan who would prefer to pretend that whole phase of his life never happened.

My position has always been: Black Francis = Pixies = Frank Black. It's all one career, one body of work. The first Frank Black record is an obvious continuation of what was happening on Trompe Le Monde, and Teenager Of The Year flows directly from that too.

I think the distrust of Frank Black's solo career comes from the fact that his stuff is intermittently brilliant, but his records (or the ones I own / have heard anyway) are generally a bit patchy.. I don't know whether it's lack of quality control (he does a lot of records!) or the lack of contribution from the other Pixies members(??) or just a fluctuating creative spirit, but it's difficult to stick on a Catholics record, play it all the way through and go "Man, that was fantastic, I'm gonna put it on again RIGHT NOW!" the way you can with all the Pixies albums..

oooh... with exception of the last three though.. The first couple Catholics albums are good, but something about Black Letter Days and Show Me Your Tears.. brilliant in my opinion. Worth listening to again and again.

But I'm a bit of a freak when it comes to Frank Black.... I'd rather see him and the Catholics for two nights straight again for $10 (he did a lovely 5 straight nights of shows in Toronto a few years back) each than the Pixies for $30+...
