Do you remember as a little kid, hearing music and being filled with .. ahem I don't like to use this word often... joy?

You know, that feeling that the music gave you that you were truly alive?

I've just bought

D Kay & Epsilon - Barcelona (Bad Company remix)

and by golly I feel the love. I'm jumping around my room in drunken ecstacy. I honestly feel like hugging someone.

So what tune (and I'm gonna limit you all to a single song) gives you that feeling that everything is all good? That its actually fucking marvellous to be alive on this planet?

Goldie Lookin Chains - "GLC Leisurewear"

Welsh scallies rapping about tracksuits. It's gorgeous and can be downloaded here. I love that something this individual and silly is being made and that a genuine group of ordinary kids that think something is funny can make it a reality and get thousands of people into it. Heartwarming, it is.

Ladies and gentlemen
It's my pleasure to introduce to you
He's a friend of mine
(Yes, yes I am)
And he goes by the name...

Justin.

'Senorita' rocks my world. Four singles in, surely even the most churlishly anti-pop hater must concur that this boy has a gift? It's the perfect end of summer tune, too. That shuffling, lazy Neps beat... Ah.

I can't find the remix, but here is the original.

there is a realplayer link somewhere on the page. There isn't too much difference between the remix and the original... you'll get the idea...

Hey Fly, have you heard the booger remix? It's the weirdest thing I've heard on commercial radio in ages.

But for my contribution to the thread, it's gotta be Lumidee. Never Leave You was playing in the supermarket the other week and I was looking at cleaning products and unconsciously having a little dance when I looked up and noticed a girl on the other side of the aisle doing the same thing. It's just plain the happiest song I've heard in ages, and makes you glad people still make nice things.

"The Riches", by Jane's Addiction. It's got everything... the transcendent guitars, Perry doing his best angelic thing, a kick-ass celebratory hook, a cute little bit where he goes "oh... THERE you are!", and best of all, a nice little rhyme at the end- "I'm happy that the sky is blue and that the earth is green/and that there's lots of nice clean air sandwiched in between." It's so lovely.

You know, I can't think of a poptastic great-to-be-alive song right at the moment.. that's really sad, isn't it?

I suppose I'm mostly listening to grumpy old records at the moment..

I have just finally got hold of the Nuggets box set though, which has to feature more POP POWER per minute than any other thing ever released.. from an era where you got monstrous dancing grooves, rockin' guitars and joyous pop tunes with barely concealed sexual/chemical subtexts .. all in the same song. It's just a huge overdose of absolute crazy perfection.

At the moment the songs that make me do the Dance of Joy are Song For A Future Generation, by the B-52's, Acid Police, by the Boredoms and We Want Fun, by Andrew W.K.

Yotsuba & Benjamin!
16:19 / 27.08.03
While I do love "Senorita", I'm currently all about Snoop Dogg's "Beautiful". I must have listened to that track at least twenty times in the past two days. I'd like to find the video version somewhere, with that wicked live drum interlude. Probably my favorite Neptunes production to date. Just GOOD.

I'm currently digging on OutKast's "Hey Ya". I've listened to this song over and over again, much to my roomates' dismay.

Shake it like a Polaroid picture, indeed!

Foust is SO authentic
20:35 / 27.08.03
Bruce Cockburn's Open. Rarely do acoustic guitars make me dance.... but line "light comes at you sideways... enfolds you like a gown" always makes me smile so wide.

The Travis cover of 'Hit Me Baby One More Time'. I think it's the ludicrousness of the fact that it *works*. Gets me grinning like a loon

Definitely A Town Called Malice by The Jam.

EEEh. So many of these at the moment actually...

Lil Wayne - 'shine' is being listened to daily by me, especially the line "lets talk about all this ice that I'm wearin, so many carats like I'm a fuckin vegetarian" which has to be re-rewound and come again at least 3 times...

Tiga - Hot in herre, obviously. It's genius is self-evident.

The words "summer" "happy" "joy" and "Kid 606" do not really sit well together, but the kid's "the illness" is rocking my world just now.

Oh, and Kelis - "Milkshake". So good.

10:35 / 28.08.03
Leroy Hutson "Get to this you'll get to me", dug out of my pathetically small collection of soul records for the first time in 10 years. Classic uptempo 70's soul - it's got everything, strings, handclaps, killer vocals, killer hook. Can't believe I've gone so long without playing it.

illmatic
11:06 / 28.08.03
Other killer tunes out for the tape - Eddie Kendricks "Girl you need a change of mind" and "Running balc to you" by white soul legend Eddie Hinton (off the new "Country Got Soul" compilation".

Why don't I have more of these records?

My god, a revelation hits... Travis still exist??

Regrettable Juvenilia
14:38 / 28.08.03
Yeah, but that cover is pretty old, dating back to before they were quite so Satanic as they are today. (Their next album will have songs about serious subjects like domestic violence apparently - the mind boggles.)

'Laces: on the money about 'Hot In Herre'.

The Falcon

What is this 'Milkshake'?

Kelis is my diva, and I really must know.

Goodness Gracious Meme
15:45 / 28.08.03
fly, they were pretty satanic even then. that's what makes the cover so glorious.

Blur - girls and boys.

It's association-based rather than that its the best thing ever, but it's keeping me grinning. (basically having had one of the best weekends evah, involving dancing to it with a bunch of girls who do boys who like boys like their girls etc...)

Jack The Bodiless
19:46 / 28.08.03
The Wildhearts are my baby right now, since I got their new CD, The Wildhearts Must Be Destroyed! Anything, really, but 'So Into You', for the lines "I like that you've got bigger balls than almost all the special forces/And I need you leaving me like UFOs need horses...", and 'Anthem', for being gloriously fucked.

reddog
21:34 / 28.08.03
Mine is 'Little red riding hood' by Sinister Dexter - a mad swing track that makes me want to dance, it feels playfully predatory.

and a bootleg - 'gay bar' mixed with 'hey micky'. ha ha...big smile on my face.

reddog- funny you should say that- a work colleague of mine just emailed me his own remix- Gay Bar mixed with Ghostbusters. Works a treat!

Loads of the Sean Paul album is fucking A-right.

Especially 'International Affair' and 'Shake That Thing'.

I'm currently all about Snoop Dogg's "Beautiful". I must have listened to that track at least twenty times in the past two days.

hell yeah. i remember westwood saying to pharrell that this song is spiritual, which sounds really trite but it's so fucking true. i love this song. it's so joyful and proud. it's a shame that they're wearing bermuda shorts in the video.

i am currently in lust with right thurr by chingy the remix with trina. it's so sexy and sticky and, fuck, it's just fucking great. ha ha.

i too am a big fan of 'right thurr.' but currently i'm also 'bout 'like a pimp' by david banner. so, so good. so, soooo misogynist. but i love it. i can't help it. the beat, the samples, are all sick as hell.

Does anyone else often get that thing whereby the first few times you hear a song, you simultaneously don't care for it too much right now but just know that it's going to get its hooks into you eventually? And then one day you just start humming it to yourself over and over, and it's like an epiphany as you realise yes, it's completely brilliant?

That's how I feel about 'Frontin'' today.

"Everytime your name was brought up I would act all nonchalant in front of an audience, like you was just another shorty I put the naughty on, but uh, truth be told, you threw me for a loop..."

The Fountains Of Wayne recording of "...Baby One More Time" is waaaaay better than the Travis version. But that's not hard to imagine, is it?

Not Here Still
12:13 / 30.08.03
I'm currently playing and replaying 'Ladyflash'by the Go Team, on the Memphis Industries label compilation. It's like someone put a sixties soul tune and a early eighties hip hop tune in a bag and rolled them down the stairs, and it's bloody great.

Plus I've just got into New Wave by Common, possibly the only rap song ever with someone out of Stereolab singing on it. I'm still trying to work out if Laetitia Sadler's voice was sampled or if she's actually singing like that....

She's singing like that.

The Natural Way

Tiga - Hot in herre, obviously. It's genius is self-evident.

This is very true.

Otherwise:

finally got the Dizzee album, so any number of tunes on that.

some tune by Suicide Rap Orgy with a bunch of girls screaming about their cunts.

LFO's new one - 'Freak'. A return to bleep!

a fucking amazing house tune that I've only heard once with some bloke singing! Brill! More, in fact, ANY details as I get them.

Flock of Seagulls: 'I Ran' (or whatever it's called).

Bergheim 54. Mmmm.

There's a nice list for ya. How annoying. But this is the stuff that I's liking.

Our Lady of The Two Towers
13:48 / 02.09.03
'What is the Problem?' Grafiti.
'My Generation' Patti Smith.
'Eve's Mouth' Alix Olson.
'The Box' (Hammer Horror) Orbital.
'Impact (The World is Burning)' Orbital.
'Everything in it's Right Place' (UNKLE Remix (I think)) Radiohead (on the Fabric Live 01 album)
'Phasers to Stun' Helen Love.

The next Pet shop boys single "Miracles" have been on constant repeat on my computer since I found it on kazaa. It's got this menacing bowiesque 80's feeling -- reminds me of Kate Bush's "Running up that hill".

It can be listened to

There is this band called Rainer Maria, and they have thi tune "Artificial Lights". Get it from www.epitonic.com. Put it on repeat. It will rock you in non-euclidian ways. They also have one of the best shouty tunes (along with classic "scream yourself senseless" songs such as Nirvana's "tourette's", Harry Pussy's "Showroom Dummies" and Sludgefeast's "Hi-Fi Rejection") I've heard in a long time, called "Made in Secret". SHOUT SHOUT SHOUT!

And this other band, Rilo Kiley. Get this song called "Science Vs. Romance". It will lodge itself between your ribs and then it will start chewing.
