Scorpion bowls, every time I go out for Chinese food. A must.

Vodka martinis. Just tried a new one this past weekend called a Key Lime Martini. Nice tart lime flavour chased by a hint of vanilla. My new favourite.

Favourite winter beverage: hot cocoa loaded with Bailey's Irish Cream and Butterscotch Schnapps. Yum.

Bloody Mary's on New Year's Day. The spicier the better. Mandatory.

And lest we forget: the frozen Margarita. Long may it reign.

oh yes, how could i forget the beloved margarita. sweet and salty! and all its varieties, strawberry, watermelon, and more.
also, i know an old family recipe for homemade egg nog. it will fuck you up! it's the drink that eats like a meal, cos it's made w/real eggs. also tons of sugar and 5 (count 'em) different liquors. boy is it strong. i said to my aunt, nervously, "so, uh...this has RAW EGGS in it?" she said, "yes, but do you really think any bacteria can survive in all that alcohol?" ah, yes, she's right. drink up! it is *divine*. only for around xmas, though.

My alcoholic career has been influenced most strongly by brown liquors of the Scottish, Irish, Canadian and [shame/]American make. Recently career-wise, good vodkas have stepped up to my top shelf.

In the past few weeks, however, I too have been urged to go with rum and cola-coloured beverages, Stoat.

bip and jefe, you have brought something new and wonderful into my life. GlamGoddess it is!

And the Caesar sounds great for that morning on the deck, after no more remains. Clams jam.

Anna de L, I started with OLD CROW bourbon in 32 oz convenience store cups. That's how I can drink Jack Daniels. [Fuck, fraternity life killed my soul.]

Whiskey. Irish or Scotch, never got on with Bourbon, but possibly none of the good stuff gets here. Also Pernod & Lemonade- a pleasant Absinthy taste without the expense or hallucinations. Also Cuarenta y Tres, which is Spanish and rarely seen hereabouts except in Soho off-licences.

Ignatius J, yeah i've drunk Plymouth gin but what's Tanqueray like?

I've not made a Martini with Tanqueray but with tonic it seemed like Gordons with the loudness button on, if you see what I mean, so not bad, but not striking. It has a good alcohol content, 43 percent I think. I guess it's what Gordons used to taste like before they watered it down.

and you wrote White Russians when I am bowling.
is that a nod to the Big Lebowski?

Of course! I've never had one sans vodka though.

Next time I can't decide what to have, I shall visit this thread.

FYI, at this moment I am sipping a Martini. We ran out of lemons so I'm using lime peel. S'OK, but lemon's better -- lime's masking the vermouth a little and giving a sort of plasticky/chlorophyllic taste.

The ingredient that makes a good Bloody Mary great? Horseradish.

I just had one with horseradish; it's definitely a good idea. However, I usually make mine with V8 which alters the whole taste balance.

Celery salt in a proper BM is essential.

I've also taken to Bloody Marias, which are basically the same thing but with lime instead of lemon, and tequila instead of vodka.

Try a Bleeding Nora. Gin instead of Vodka, and crumble an oxo cube instead of celery salt.

i've always stuck to vokda drinks (my newest favorite being a french martini even if it is a little bit girlie looking) as sadly i am allergic to most forms of alcohol. BM's and vodka/tonics with lime are old standbys. in the past year or so i have been experimenting with red wines (they are supposedly healthy or so i hear) and have found one that i absolutely love...bull's blood, a nice hungarian red. also recently tried 'absente' which i originally bought for the cool glass and sugarcube holder/stirrer thingy. having never tried the real thing i can honestly say that i like it and it didn't give me the usual reaction i have to alcohol (arrested breathing and muscle spasms).

that ceasar recipe is a must try this weekend...extra spicy is the way to go! and has anyone ever noticed how beautiful tanqueray/tonic looks under a spot light in a club? it was a beautiful pacific blue, just floating there in the middle of the table...sigh.

I'm quite partial to a Mint Highball. It's green creme de menthe and ginger ale, which may sound odd, but it's delicious. It's refreshing and classy, to boot.

On the weekend, someone gave me a concoction consisting of red cask wine and pasionfruit fizzy drink. It was surprisingly drinkable, and I didn't even go blind.

All this talk of lemons and limes with Martinis makes me think of this joke which says it beter than I ever could.

A big guy walks into a bar and orders a martini. One part vermouth to 25 parts gin, stirred not shaken. The bartender is quite intimidated by this guy so he's extremely careful in mixing the drink especially since the guy is watching his every move.

He finally finishes the mix and passes it over. As he's passing it he asks the guy if he'd like a twist of lemon in his drink. The guy leans accross the bar, grabs the bartender and screams in his face:

"If I wanted a lemonade, I would have fucking asked for one!"

I'm a good red wine or G&T girl, meself, but will indulge in a fancy vodka martini if feeling flush.

I have a question that I hope someone can enlighten me on, regarding spirits.

Coming from the UK and with a pretty much clear record of poverty from university on, I haven't been able to be all that picky about what brand of vodka, gin etc. I drink. I suppose I favoured Stoli in England, and if I ever bought gin, it would probably have been Gordon's. When in a pub/ bar, I would simply request a G&T or V&T or whatever and not bother to specify the brand. Doing this in the US elicits gasps of horror from American companions. They tell me that if I don't specify a "top shelf" brand, I will get the cheap stuff and will dissolve my brain and get the mother of all hangovers.

Now, if I were drinking martinis or straight shots, I might, perhaps, be more picky, but to be honest, most of the time I really don't pay enough attention/have good enough taste buds to notice a difference between brands of clear spirits, so especially in mixed drinks my inclination is to let it slide. I suspect that most of the difference, particularly in vodka (gin does have all the nice aromatics) comes down to marketing. After all, isn't the point of vodka that it's distilled and filtered to the point of virtual tastelessness?

Am I wrong in this? Is it worth paying more?

On a related side note, it seems Gordon's gin in the green bottle is a 'respectable' brand in the UK, in the US, Gordon's comes in litre-plus quantities in a plastic bottle in the supermarket - are these the same or different, and does it matter?

Personally I find Bombay Sapphire a bit too citrussy and acidic - prefer Plymouth, though I think the Navy Strength might be a bit too much even for me.
Courage, Cat, courage. It's the finest thing. And the most expensive. But nothing makes those pints of G&T go down smoother.

Currently, I'm going through a chocolate martini phase. Just make sure you use the white creme de cacao, otherwise they're horribly syrupy. By the end of the drink, the choc mint stick in the glass should be able to be lit and used as a flare thanks to the amount of alcohol absorbed. Two of my heavy-measures versions can put most people on the floor.

At the moment, I'm drinking a reasonable amount of James Squire Amber Ale, too. It's lovely.

Additionally? Merlot blends.

Vodka Red Bull, the cocktail version of Tenant's Super Lager. I gather they've gone out of fashion. Pshaw, not on the gay scene. Comes in pints in 79 CXR.

Otherwise, for health reasons, have to recommend a Jane Asher: warm piss with a twist of lemon.

I used to work in a fine old bar run by nefarious types. Frequented by a weird mix of Edinburgh's finest gentry and all the local bikers. On my first night they showed me how to save the lemon slices and reuse them, from the G's & T's the gentry ordered. Been suspicious of fruit garnishes ever since.

This thread is bringing back a lot of memories of college hijinks, and a lot of memories of not being able to remember anything for that matter. The old college standbyes:

Hawaiian Punch & Grain Alcohol (sometimes served up in children's inflatable wading pools)

Jolt Cola & Vodka (I think it was called an "elevator")

Jaegermeister (Needs no introduction)

Jello shots (just because)

and of course (drumroll please): Snakebites & Bodyshots, especially with someone you desire. 'Nuff said.

(sigh) I miss college.

As I recall, they're pretty much the same, but the enormous plastic barrels are, what, $22? -- about what we pay for a litre in the UK (high taxes justified by the "reasoning" that we shouldn't be drinking anyway). So, spend the money you're saving on a lesser quantity of quality booze. Unless you're a student looking to entertain on a budget, it's worth it, oh yes. :-)

I stole a bag of powdered lemon-lime flavoured Gatorade the other day, which apparently makes 18 litres of the stuff. Next party I have, I'm making Gatorade punch. Any suggestions for what else to put in it?

Desperate times can call for desperate measures, especially if you are a poor-student-type like myself. I have a suggestion for those of you who looking for a bit more punch for your pound and don't want to stoop to meths just yet. Place two bottles of white wine and one bottle of vodka into the freezer for a good while. Ideally the contents of each should be about half frozen and half liquid. Mix one third vodka to two thirds wine and drink hastily. It sounds foolish and foul, I know. To some extent this is true, but the resulting concocation of death tastes far less vile than you might imagine and it is unbelieveably effective. The trick is to get the drink as close to freezing point as possible, thereby removing the vast majority of the kick from the vodka. If it starts to warm up, place your drink back in the freezer until you can stomach it again. I can testify to the fact that you get disproportionately drunk for the volume consumed.

This is such a thread to bring me out of accidental posting hiatus.

I'm with praying mantis, I must say: Stoli Vanil & Diet Coke, and sometime Stoli Limon & Diet Coke, which I suppose is just as good with regular Coke but I hate that fuzzy-teeth sugary-soda feeling. I pretty much adore the flavored Stolis - all the fruits are good with tonic, but my most beloved drink these days is what the local bartenders call a Fresh & Clean: take a pint glass and fill it about 2/3 of the way with a combination of Stoli Razberi & Stoli Vanil. Add equal parts Sprite and soda water and garnish with three or four squeezed limes (the squeezing is very important). Fanfuckingtastic.

I feel like I'm giving away secrets by posting that here, it's so good.

Also cheap and delicious: Yellowtail Shiraz. Though of late the wine-buyers in my house have been sticking with what they call "St. Carlo of Modesto", meaning Carlo Rossi, and it's almost enough to keep me from the wine.

Almost.

And beer, of course. Especially Henry's Dark, which I can't find anymore. Or Newcastle, which I've already been made fun of for. But I've sort of hit the point where if I'm going to drink beer, well, I can do it at home. Being out is an excuse for something different.

The best new cocktail I had recently was a Wild Honey Pie. You can get them at sixdegrees in Frith Street. I can't remember exactly what goes into them. It's honey vodka, Midori and lemon juice (which cuts the sweetness of the Midori wonderfully), and I think either Chambord or Framboise or one of those berry liqueurs. Really nice.

But you can't beat a good mojito. Fresh mint and lime go so well together. Although right now I have a mojito and appletini hangover. Blargh.

Oh yes, Anna, more and more Midori. Lovely stuff.

But no mint must ever be mixed in drinks. Overwhelms everything else. Might as well have lemonade and a polo mint. Same goes for North African cuisine, bloody mint in everything. Sheesh, you poncy young people these days... *grumble, snark*

the past: In 1997 I began to drink much more than I had before. Having never learnt to appreciate the virtues of wine and beer by then, I mostly swallowed drinks only; mainly drinks that were full of goshdarn sweetness. I was big on Sourthern Comfort w/ Kondi or Cola, Pisang Ambon w/ Orange/Passion Fruit Juice, Kurant Vodka w/ Sprite or Seven-Up, straight up Malibus, Grasshoppers, frozen Margaritas of the lemon or strawberry flavour variety sans salt and black pigs (re-named 'small gray' when PC times occurred), which is a bottle of vodka and dissolved-inserted-sweets concoction.

Now: Having had disastrous results of a night where beer, tequila shots and wine had been mixed in June this year, I now no longer mix wine with beer, or with drinks. Because I no longer feel like adopting a hole in my head, I mostly keep to beer, however, only the slightly darker version of the Danish beer like Carl's Special or Tuborg Classic, as the originals just taste like foul piss (in my imagination, I have never tasted piss). Boring, I know, but then again the indelible memories keep me strong in my dedication to never ever get as wasted again as in June.

God damn Philly Fridge got me hooked on cold coffees (word to Philly-side Lithers 4ever!), and I found these coolers that are iced cappuccino Vodka concoctions called “Mudslides.” Delicious, but much to my disappointment it is not really coffe, but simulated flavour. It ought to be god damn real fuckin’ coffee. Maybe I’ll write the company….But I only drink a couple at a time—not to get loaded: the hangover, I imagine, would be horrible. No, drinking to get loaded I go with rye and seven every time (boring, predictable me and all).

I am relatively pedestrian when it comes to boozing, normally sticking with boring old lager. When I'm feeling rich however I like to go drinking in belgian pubs and try all the crazy 9% beers like Hoegarden grand cru, forbidden fruit or delerium tremens. On the spirits front I can't touch vodka as it sends me deep in to a maudlin drunk, which is bad. I therefore drink gin (gin, makes a man mean) in either martinis or with tonic. Jack Daniels I like either straight or with coke, though I soon tire of the syrupy nature of coke. I have to beware though for too much J.D sends me crazy and causes black-outs. I never drink....wine.

I prefer to say that I'm broke rather than cheap, but unfortunately they do basically come down to the same thing... >

oh no they don't. Trust me on this

if you're cheap, you never drink anything more expensive than filthbeer, no matter how much money you have.

if you're broke, you drink filthbeer *unless someone else is paying*

*waves at jefe*

oh, and on cheap goodness: bailey's coffee.

spend money on good fresh coffee and buy a supermarket-own-brand bailey's knock-off (for about 1/4 of the price). you'll notice no difference, but have alot of fun....

add a dollop of bailey's hagen-daas.

mmmmm
