I'm a good red wine or G&T girl, meself, but will indulge in a fancy vodka martini if feeling flush.
I have a question that I hope someone can enlighten me on, regarding spirits.
Coming from the UK and with a pretty much clear record of poverty from university on, I haven't been able to be all that picky about what brand of vodka, gin etc. I drink. I suppose I favoured Stoli in England, and if I ever bought gin, it would probably have been Gordon's. When in a pub/ bar, I would simply request a G&T or V&T or whatever and not bother to specify the brand. Doing this in the US elicits gasps of horror from American companions. They tell me that if I don't specify a "top shelf" brand, I will get the cheap stuff and will dissolve my brain and get the mother of all hangovers.
Now, if I were drinking martinis or straight shots, I might, perhaps, be more picky, but to be honest, most of the time I really don't pay enough attention/have good enough taste buds to notice a difference between brands of clear spirits, so especially in mixed drinks my inclination is to let it slide. I suspect that most of the difference, particularly in vodka (gin does have all the nice aromatics) comes down to marketing. After all, isn't the point of vodka that it's distilled and filtered to the point of virtual tastelessness?
Am I wrong in this? Is it worth paying more?
On a related side note, it seems Gordon's gin in the green bottle is a 'respectable' brand in the UK, in the US, Gordon's comes in litre-plus quantities in a plastic bottle in the supermarket - are these the same or different, and does it matter? |
