I do love Martinis, but really...they have to be made correctly or they taste horrid. Cold. Very fucking cold. That is the way I like them best.

However, on a way-too-early-morning-with-hangover, I like to emerse myself in the warmth of bloodly comfort that is a Caesar...avec raifort

Ah... I do love your tastes in drinks May. However cold martinis are horrid on a hot day. You just want to swallow them down like lemonaid and thats dangerous...but in a could be either verrrry good or verrrry bad.

Caesar for hangovers...must remember that one.

For cold nights give me a mug of hot red wine.

Damn..all this talk of drinks makes me thirsty. Oh well I guess I have no other option than to open a bottle of pear wine. The suffering I go through because of the 'Lith..

I've been grooving on a rum & coke vibe recently. I think it was Pirates of the Caribbean that did it.

What is a Ceasar?
I personally am onto the Jack n`Coke thing lately, having given up
beer for practical reasons. I did try to choke down a properly made
Absinthe Sunday night, but I really do hate licorice. They are awfully
pretty...

My favourite drink recently has been champagne and cognac. Some places will try to add sugar, but stop them - it's so much better without. I love this drink because it's so excessive and glam. And it gets you really drunk but in an 'up' kind of way.

Otherwise, Cuba Libres all the way...

Jack Daniels and Coca Cola. Although a couple of weeks ago I had to make do with a bottle of Jagermeister, which tastes like black licorice, which tastes like shit. I'm not much of a beer drinker. I really don't understand my friends who can drink a 12 pack of beer. I couldn't drink a 12 pack of water. It's just too much liquid.

I'll just have a water. I've been drunk since mayday and the line has to be drawn (and cut?) somewhere...

Pints of ale, Jack and Coke, Bacardi and Coke when they're out of Jack, and lots of Black Russians.

Mmn. Black Russians. On holiday in Greece, I tried two new variations - someone introduced me to the White Russian Sans Vodka which is basically chocolate milkshake for grown ups. It was alright.

However, I did get a Black Russian made with Mars Bar Vodka which kind of tasted much like you'd expect; the caramel sweetens the taste of the vodka. It tastes like drinking sweet. Quite nice, but I'll stick to the traditional one...

Red wine. I love it but it gives me the most heathen hangover so I've stopped drinking it.

Vodka. It's so yum and there's this fantastic chocolate vodka you can get, both tastes are slightly marred by the other but they're both there and it's triumphant!

So I'm quite boring... and I hate JD. How the hell do so many of you drink it?

Because we're from the south. And we're tough, like Frank Sinatra.

Ohh, Anna...I am with you there! LOOVE Red Wine, especially the kick-ya-in-the-teeth kind, like a full-bodied Shiraz. YUM, YUM, YUM! I also find JD appalling....it is more of a kick-ya-in-the-gut type drink, if you know what I mean.

Coincidentally (or perhaps subliminally driven by the media), I'm into Martinis as well, served very cold with lemon peel and none of that vodka nonsense. Someone said the other evening that mine tasted just like a professional bartender's product so I am very pleased with my work on this so far.

JD -- It's OK, though I would check behind the bar for Maker's Mark or similar quality product before going for this. If you must have the cheap stuff, Wild Turkey is perhaps a little nicer than JD but it's kind of a Coke/Pepsi thing in the UK -- very few places serve both. And speaking of fizzy pop, why anyone would prefer to drown bourbon in this is quite beyond me.

Spanish, South African or South American red wine. French or Italian is OK at a pinch. There may be such a thing as German red wine but I honestly wouldn't know. Have the odd glass of water or even food with it if you are on a mission and it probably won't bite you in the ass.

Half-pints of bitter shandy when I am driving.

White Russians when I am bowling.

I have a demijohn of what I hope will be plum wine upstairs next to the boiler. It was meant to be a "dry" run for the conversion of a quantity of grapes overhanging from next door's garden, but all the signs so far are that it will be quite drinkable and probably better than the fruit of the (I suspect merely ornamental) vine.

Chin-chin!

Frank Sinatra is mixing himself a Martini in the special Mafia-only section of Hell. It's like the prison scene in Goodfellas, only with more flaming molten pits and evisceration.
Me? I'm a Mai-Tai, Woo Woo, Girl Scout Cookie kind of guy.

Oh yes, UHM, Blue Sapphire is marvelous. Have you tried Tanquerey or Plymouth as well?

Papess
11:34 / 26.08.03
Oh right! Just for you unheimlich...

Bloody Caesar
1 oz Vodka
Celery salt
1 dash Worcestershire Sauce
1 dash Tabasco Sauce
Clamato Juice
Salt
Pepper

I personally use a helluva lot more Tabasco than that and then add Horseradish to it...but I am nuts. :P

Ignatius J, yeah i've drunk Plymouth gin but what's Tanqueray like?

and you wrote White Russians when I am bowling.
is that a nod to the Big Lebowski?

Eurgh, I just looked up Clamato juice and found out it's tomato and clam juice. Yucky. Who thinks these things up?
Would a Caesar taste okay without it, May?

Papess
12:05 / 26.08.03
You can use Tomato juice, but then it is called a Bloody Mary.

Trust me, the clam taste is not that bad. Then again, I like clams

Ariadne
12:09 / 26.08.03
Oh, of course. But clams are out, I'm afraid - I'll have to stick with the Bloody Marys, then! In fact, I'd like one right now.

See, I go with the sugared version, but this *is* truly the Goddesses' Milk...

Also, Unheimlich, my maaaan, the G&T is glorious, especially with Bombay Sapphire, and lime instead of lemon. Glass ideally chilled. ever tried Sloe gin? dee-lish, and dead easy to make.

Caffreys. Mmm. Creamy.

Red wine, espesh decent Rioja. mmm. smooooth.

On the non-alco front, my local sudanese place makes a fresh lime drink, which is basically lime juice/water/tiny bit of sugar blended until it froths. Fucking yummy

I am in love with stout right now. As I'm pretty hungover this morning, I would love a Beamish right now, but I have to be at work in 2 hours, alas.

Whiskey is a favourite right now, too.. is it 'whisky' or 'whiskey'?

I'm alarmed by my recent discovery that I like cocktails. I'm a pints of bitter girl, yet last week saw me sitting with Cherry Bomb quaffing a lychee and rose water martini. Scary. (You can probably spot the cocktail virgin by the fact I choose the silliest thing on the menu. Though I balked at the peanut butter martini)

Whisky if it's Scotch, whiskey if it's Irish or American.

Personally I find Bombay Sapphire a bit too citrussy and acidic - prefer Plymouth, though I think the Navy Strength might be a bit too much even for me. Gin and ginger is a jolly pleasant alternative (again with lime rather than lemon).

A pint of 6X goes down well. The pubs here generally have a good range of decent bitters and you can have a splendid time sampling the more obscure ones, but I find the old favourites are often the best...

Cocktails - I don't really like the awful 'six shots of every spirit group' type, like Long Island Iced Tea/ anything with blue Curacao in it. Nor am I fond of excessively fruity ones. Brandy Alexanders are a Good Thing in moderation (you have to be careful though, as if you mix dairy in with your cocktails things can get a bit icky). Bloody Mary is a marvellous old battleaxe.

Why, then, do I always end up drinking filthbeer?

first of all: beer ain't drinkin'.
i stick to the hard stuff, and a little champagne on special occasions. no wine as i really only like red wine and it gives me the same kind of hangover as anna de l. oh, i do drink a wussy blush when my mom comes to visit; she brings it.
so yeah. i like diet coke w/most vodkas, rum (esp. cap'n morgan's), jd or jim beam. coke w/vanilla vodka makes it taste like vanilla coke; it's so sweet that you could give it to yr six year old when you want her to lie down for a nap. mix it w/lemon vodka, and it tastes a bit like lemon coke. i'm quite fond of screwdrivers also. (good for when yr sick, but still wanna party.) and ginger ale and whiskey's good, too. lemonade w/bacardi limon rum is divine, perfect for summer! and i recently found out that diet pink lemonade and whiskey is good, if you don't mind that fake-sugar taste, and i don't. whiskey is good w/many things you don't normally think of, like sprite and orange juice.
my god i sound like a fucking alcoholic.
