Here's the part that hit me:
"The orbit of Mars has been getting more extreme over the past few thousand years, and the last time we passed this close was about 60,000 years ago. The next time we get this close will be in 2287 (284 years from now).
On 27 August 2003 we will be 55.758 million km from Mars.
On 22 September 1988, we were 59 million km from Mars.
On 12 August 1971, we were 56.2 million km from Mars.
On 23 August 1924, we were 55.778 million km from Mars.
This year's close approach to Mars will have no harmful effect on the Earth."
Dig. So while this is getting a lot of play in the press and so on, and the 60,000 years part is technically true, we've been ALMOST this close to Mars several times this century.
Tends to take the whole thing down a notch in importance, I thought.
ALTHOUGH...While I'm not very attached to astrology and so on, I was born in 1971, had something very important happen to me in 1988, and seem to be undergoing some sort of major change right now, and I'm an Aries who exhibits most of the Aries tendencies.
But that's just me. And I doubt I'll last till 2287 to find out if there's really a pattern!
Maybe this is just a sign that we should all go and reread our Edgar Rice Burroughs. Ah, the dead sea-beds of Barsoom! |
