You bastards! None of you showed up!

...

I'm kidding. Actually when I stepped off the ferry (probably around 4:15pm) I didn't notice anything weird going on. The one intersection I had to walk through to get to the train was fucked up. But I didn't pay much attention to it cause it always has something wrong with it. So I walked on. There seemed to be a bit more people out than usual but I thought that they were just looking at some guy standing on the edge of a building's roof. So I kept walking. Then I got to the train station (Bowling Green station on the 4/5 line) and the lights were out and MTA workers were telling us that the station was closed. I asked if the Wall Street station was operating and some guy told me that he had just come from there and that it too was closed. I thanked him and started climbing the stairs out of the station telling people that the station is closed and that there's probably a blackout in the New York business district. I started walking north and started talking with some lady who told me that her cell phone was on the fritz and that before the phone died her husband told her that the power was out on 59th street (where the woman's husband works) as well as in Long Island and Westchester. I thanked her and told her to use a payphone due to the fact that phone systems run off separate power grids. I kept walking up north, running every once in a while past the crowds. Everytime I passed a radio I slowed down and listened. That's how I found out the extent on the power outage.

I arrived at alt.coffee (137 Avenue A) at exactly 5pm. I had a full 2 liter bottle of Mountain Dew in my bag, still cold, and I bought an iced coffee for 2 bucks. The doors and windows were open so there was enough light and enough air flow to keep the place quite cool. I took out my Invisibles trade paper back and started reading it. I realized that most likely none of you would show up but decided to stay there anyway just in case. I'm hoping that none of you got stuck in the subways because of this meet.

I got home (in Staten Island) at 10pm. It took me 2 hours to get home and I'm glad that I always carry a flashlight with me. Hope you all had fun. What's the new plan?

Caleigh
19:04 / 15.08.03
i think we will have to wait for the subway to be up before we can make a plan

Hope all NYC and all northeast 'Lithers are OK. I was in my neighborhood (Greenpoint) in Brooklyn at the time, we were 24 hours without power. Sort of cool, actually. We'll set something up for the near future - maybe at Alt.coffee in the coming weeks?

How did you get home, Lionheart, with no subways or trains?

Lionheart
00:28 / 16.08.03
I walked to alt.coffee from the ferry, spent 3 hours at alt.coffee, and then I walked back to the ferry. The trip to alt.coffee from the ferry takes half an hour by foot. So I got to the ferry and then took the ferry to Staten Island and then took a bus home. So I was okay.

OK, a new attempt. Has anybody seen "Weather Underground" yet? I'm game for it if it's still playing. Would also like to see "American Splendor" as I've tried to go twice (once with HunterWolf) and it's been sold out both times. The first one may be leaving town soon though (if not already).

Belle and Sebastian are playing for free (kinda) in Prospect Park on Tuesday night 8pm.

Also MUM are playing the Bowery Ballroom Tuesday but they cost $15

I'm so behind in films, I haven't even seen 28 Days Later yet.

FinderWolf
16:09 / 19.08.03
What do you mean 'kinda free'? Belle & Sebastian are pretty cool.

Boy in a Suitcase
16:17 / 19.08.03
I am likely going to Belle & Sebastian tonight. Anybody want to meet up there? If you don't have my phone # you can message me offlist for it.

Ethan Hawke
17:18 / 19.08.03
Um, Belle and Sebastian ~tickets~ are actually $35. You can, however, hear the music from outside the enclosure.

FinderWolf
17:24 / 19.08.03
*LOL* OK - I can't afford the $35 and I'm supposed to hang out with a friend tonite. But I'm sure it'll be a great show.

Boy in a Suitcase
18:03 / 19.08.03
Fuck! Might still go though.

Lionheart
18:31 / 19.08.03
Well, at the moment I'm in Manhattan. But I'll be rushing home to finish (and begin) an article for BoyWithSuitcase's Disinfo book proposal thingie. But I'm free tommorow! Hell, we can even meet up at WBAI (99.5 fm)'s studio tommorow. Who's up for it?

Caleigh
21:36 / 19.08.03
time?

address?

Lionheart
02:48 / 20.08.03
The address is 120 Wall Street. 10th floor.

I dion't know at what time we should meet. When's everybody available?

Oh, and bring a photo id. The security guard outside checks it.

Boy in a Suitcase
15:44 / 20.08.03
My friends Brian and Sara and I are going to CBGB's tonight. No clue who's playing. But I'd be up for a meetup at some point, especially if people are interested in hanging out in the Bowery.

Also, here's this if anybody's down:

You are invited to take part in MOB, the project that
creates an inexplicable mob of people in New York City
for ten minutes or less. Please forward this to other
people you know who might like to join.

MOB #7

FAQ

Q.  Why would I want to join a stupid mob?

A.  Tons of other people are doing it.

Q.  Tons of stupid people.

A.  Wait a second. Q, have you joined the mob
"backlash"?

Q.  Yes, I have.

A.  Why?

Q.  Tons of other people are doing it. I read so in
the paper.

A.  But Q, don't you see? That's why people join the
mob, too!

Q.  Hey, you're right!

A.  So why should we fight?  Join forces with the tons
of people who are DOING the mob.  Then there will be
MORE tons of people, and you will all be even more
right.

Q.  Makes sense to me. I'm in.

A.  Welcome back.

Q.  Can the mob sing something?

A.  Don't push it.

Q.  Hey, wasn't the Mob Project going to take one
request?

A.  Yes.  Thanks to Operative "James" for contributing
the idea for MOB #7.
