To be honest, I can't blame the people at Friendster for wanting to delete some of the more obvious novelty 'users' there. (After all, we used to have them on Barbelith, but nobody does it anymore here...) I'm afraid it seems the plan is to kill 'em all - even poor hapless Rowling homages who never hurt a fly.
But it's not just the obviously fake Friendsters who've been excised. Vincent Gallo was thrown off too. His response to this is, intentionally or not, hilarious:
One again I'd like to make it clear: Vincent Gallo is on friendster not in the same way Bjork, Paris Hilton, or Johnny Depp were on friendster. Vincent Gallo is on Friendster as he BELIEVES Friendster is destined to become a colossal art project with no end; as opposed to a boring online dating service that¹s been proven to not function. Long live FRIENDSTER FOR ART!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Auspiciously,
~ Vincent Gallo
And he's not the only one. What's fascinating to me about all this is that telling the real 'celebrities' from the fake ones only becomes difficult at a certain level of fame - in other words, Marie formerly of Kenickie and Jon from Comet Gain are pretty much guaranteed to be real, Tom Cruise is a fakester... But there are less obvious ones: Har Mar Superstar has been on there a while and it seems to be common knowledge that it's him, but it would be easy to fake; Princess Superstar is there under her real name and seems genuine; there's a couple of Kathleen Hannas who look more or less fake, but one could be real... |
