I agree, and it's horrible; I'm just not suprised at it. I'm not defending them, but even though rocks aren't life threatening, even in a democratic society, soldiers will shoot you if you throw rocks at them. I can see this happening more often as more US soldiers are killed in ambushes and the rest are on edge and see everyone as a potential combatant...

2 US soldiers killed today, 6 UK soldiers yesterday.. this could really go from bad to worse quickly and it's frightening...

%But... I thought the war was over.%

Seriously I keep thinking to myself, this is what happens when you pretend a war is over and really isn't. It is a quagmire, no matter how the spin doctors would like to portray this war as "over" and these incidents as isolated.

From Nick's Red Cross link, the Jun 20th update:

Explosive remnants of war in Iraq are life threatening, with casualties reported daily. For the ICRC's regional ERW advisor, this is the worst situation he has seen in over 15 countries where he has worked. Especially striking is the overwhelming number of abandoned armoured vehicles and ammunition stores, in addition to the unexploded ordnance (UXO) of various types (cluster bombs, mines, etc) inherited from previous conflicts. Children reportedly play football in the midst of unexploded ordnance.

but even though rocks aren't life threatening

In all fairness, a rock isn't life-threatening. A lot of rocks are, and if a crowd is pissed enough, they don't even need the rocks.

Following their training by the Israeli army, US army officers are now using the same logic to repress social protest: fire live amunition into unarmed but angry crowds, just in case.

but that does not describe the incident in question

stones or no stones

See, I don't see why this doesn't make a difference.

BTW, isn't "stoning someone to death" a method of execution?
