Some help please - I need to get my hands on some really good, kickass rock by all-girl bands. I don't want pop music, I want balls-out ROCK. By women. Suggestions are urgently requested...

Star Of The Sea

Sleater-Kinney.
Bikini Kill.
Erase Eratta.
Le Tigre.
Lost Goat.
dozens more, but try those for starters.

15:04 / 14.06.03
The only band I can think of that's left off that list is the Donnas. That Chicks on Speed cover of Where The Wild Roses Grow still scares the crap out of me.

Ye ever reliable The KNowledge

Listen to L7.
'Smell The Magic' is a good album.

Perfect Tommy
19:04 / 14.06.03
I've always liked 7-Year Bitch. Tribe 8 might be bouncier than you're looking for, but they're fun too.

21:03 / 14.06.03
SexDigital
The Breeders
...

Can't think of many more that haven't already been covered, and aren't pop.

Menson (fantastic Norwegian power-punk-pop girl band!)
Mika Bomb (reponsible for several of the greatest songs in the history of the world)
The Gossip
The Bangs (download "I Want More" now)
The Donnas (I like their near-forgotten first album best)
The Eyeliners
The Riff Randells (pure fantasticness!!)
Hello Cruca (female Italian surf-punk!)
Helen Love (but of course)
Radio Vago
Valerie
Kaito

phew, I guess that'll probably do for now..

Team Dresch, who I got turned onto by a user here (shortfatdyke). They fuckin' rock. Hard. Like L7, Sleater Kinney and Superchunk put into a blender on liquefy.

Rasputina often don't rock, since they're all cellists, but occasionally they do. Like heavy metal superstars.

There's a band called Come that I have recorded on the B-side of tape that has Bikini Kill on the A-side. Sort of bluesy post-punk. Their lead singer was Thalia... umm, forget the last name... who was in a few different bands in one of those 90s alternative scenes.

Harry Crews was a band formed by Lydia Lunch and Kim Gordon. I only liked one song off their album, the chorus of which was "Waiting for the word come out the gospel singer's mouth." The title of the song came out of that chorus.

And if you can find it, get music by Mr. Airplane Man. They opened for Morphine on their last tour. Two girls from Boston playing dirty blues on drums and a grungy electric guitar. They were gooood. I got a CD at the show, and have no idea if they ever got signed. Web search... heck, according to their site, they've done a Peel Session this year. There's hope for a hard rock tomorrow, then.

Grant said - "Their lead singer was Thalia..."

Thalia Zedek. She's also got a terrific solo album.

I recommend Famous Monsters. Sean Yseult (White Zombie's basschick) in a krazy all girl screechy surfrock trio. Two albums (Around the World in 80 Bikinis & In The Night!!!) before they broke up.

Also the defunct Swedish metal band Drain STH. They're the band that Kittie wanted to be.

These are not exactly all girl bands but their vocalists have the power to take down a 10 story building.
get your hands on Wages of Sin by arch enemy and Beware of the Heavens by Sinergy and anything by nightwish or the gathering that´s quality female-fronted music

Jack Denfeld

Hey Cameron, you could start strummin a guitar and look in the mirror. Because you're the biggest girl I've ever seen. Hahaha

I'm sorry Cameron, I went insane about 5pm today. For proof check out my rap tribute to the genius of Bill Jemas in the comic's forum. I'll 2nd Ladytron, though. Really good.

Is Tuuli too pop? Because I was listening to them when I...wrote...something.

there's no such thing as too pop. Too crap on the other hand..

but anyway -

I was under the impression that I'd raved about Mr. Airplane Man's album "Moanin'" a great deal on here a few months ago.. it was totally one of my favourites of last year anyway.. just gets better with every listen.. so yes, I urge everybody to listen to them..

and a spelling correction;

Menson, as mentioned in my above list, are actually Mensen. In case anyone's doing a search or whatever. And they're great.

Suprised no one's mentioned Babes in Toyland... try their '92 album Fontanelle. Very good.

The Lost Girls. Just the thing for a Sunday morning in June under a big tent with a can of beer in Somerset.

For some real punk rockin' all-girl bands from back in the day, checkout:
Lilliput/Kleenex: Great cheap 2 disc set out on kill rock stars.
Bush Tetras: Boom in the Night on ROIR
Raincoats: Self titled first record. Good luck findin' it, I think it's out of print.

LDones
10:17 / 10.04.04
Grab 'Bomb the Twist' by the 5.6.7.8's. You don't need the whole EP, just that particular song. I nearly shat when I first heard it. It's like the girl's having an anuerysm and vomiting at the same time - really shit-hot.

The Timaximus, The!
17:35 / 11.04.04
This thread's almost a year old and nobody's mentioned Thee Headcoatees? Also: I second the recommendations for Sleater-Kinney, the Gossip, and Mr. Airplane Man, and add The Husbands (on RFTC's Swami label).

lonely as a cloud...
08:26 / 13.04.04
Nobody mentioned The Distillers yet...well, only one girl, but she's in charge, so I guess it counts as a girl band. Coral Fang, their latest, kicks ass.
The Breeders are good too, Throwing Muses rock. Belly are kinda pleasant grunge-lite. Seagull Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her are two Japanese girls who make kinda bizarre Ramonesy/bubblegum pop/hip-hop music...worth tracking down, imho.

Axolotl
15:04 / 13.04.04
The Donna's are good, though their last album was over produced, and they kinda lost it a bit. But that's probably what happens when you sign to a major label. Or not, what would I know. But "Turn 21" is a kick ass album

rizla mission
18:16 / 13.04.04
Agreed. "..Stay the Night" has it's moments, and I think it would be cool if they evolved into a fullscale southern rawk ensemble, but for the most part "..get Skintight" and "..Turn 21" are the classics. And I mean that: FUCKIN CLASSICS!

Since this thread's been ressurected, I can also take the oppurtunity to recommend the excellent Chinese girl-punk band Hang on the Box. Their album is called "For Every Punk Bitch and Asshole", which says it all really. Tons of fuzz guitar, generalised violent rage, curse words, screaming and banging stuff. Brilliant.

I try to work on the principle that everyone already owns records by Helen Love and Kenickie. I know that's obviously not true, but I mean, otherwise how could one possibly face a world full of people who are unaware of their greatness..?

Kirk Ultra
06:59 / 17.04.04
Has anybody mentioned Ultrababyfat? Very kickass, though only two of the four of them are girls so i dont know if it qualifies.

There's an all girl AC/DC cover band called Hell's Belles that i've seen play here in Santa Cruz that rock's harder than you can even handle. If they ever come to your town you should definately see them.

Lord Morgue
10:58 / 17.04.04
Rockbitch, Bang Wu Cherry, and Spdfgh.

Hee, anyone remember Precious Metal?

Not Here Still
14:30 / 17.04.04
I'll second that electralane nomination from the autopilot - I reckon 'Valley' off the new Power Out album is one of the best bits of music I've heard this year (although you could argue it has a male voice choir on it and isn't therefore, strictly an all-girl group.)

Oh, and the Ronettes' Be My Baby is the best girl group song ever, by the way. Not in my opinion - it's scientific fact....
