Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the slashiest of them all?

OK. Sacrilege. Seriously.

You think I don't know? I'm having flashbacks to the Pocket Dragons incident and wondering if my days here are numbered. I feel really terrible about it, honestly I do...

I think you're meant to find Chrestomanci Castle claustrophobic - Cat certainly does. Chrestomanci is a government functionary, and some parts of the atmosphere reflect that, I think. I like the fact that it doesn't shy away from presenting the castle as awful and showing you how miserable Cat is - isn't that preferable to glossing it over a-la Rowling? Also, I think that because we see everything through Cat's eyes, some of the problems you have with it might be dealt with as things work out through the plot - however, this isn't necessarily the case, and if you really hate it, don't carry on. Nothing worse than feeling that you ought to finish a book.

Well, it's only short, and I'd feel bad if I didn't. I'm not sure...obviously I can deal with the nasty nasties, and I do get the sense that, well, sense is lying somewhere round the corner. Just have to get past the nausea that overcomes me sometimes with stuff like this.

I think it might have been a bit preciptious of me to post before I finished the book. Thing is, I think so far it just seems unpleasant without having many redeeming features... whereas the Potter books might be pretty much fluff, but there is, to my mind, a reasonable amount of invention and interest there.

Yeah...I'm only recently admitting that I genuinely DO like Harry Potter. Sigh.

I think it *is* worth persevering...most people turn out to be a lot lovelier in "Charmed Life" than it appears at first.

DWJ would be mortified to hear you say so! The general consensus seems to be that her books - and Charmed Life and Eight Days of Luke in particular - were strong influences on JK Rowling, and I know she doesn't think too much of HP... Personally, I don't think the similarities go much further than those between HP and Malory Towers, but I do think that DWJ has a much broader inventive range than JK Rowling.

I finished it. The second half was better. I would read the others, but would be unlikely to seek them out unless quite bored.

I feel a bit shite for derailing my own thread, though I should probably feel worse (infinitely worse?) for not giving DWJ the proper respect. Oh dear.

Back on slashy themes...after going for full slash-immersion the past couple of weeks, I've found myself unexpectedly sprouting some sense of empathy/sympathy towards the authors etc. who get slashed - an understanding of why it might stress them out a tad. It's quite an odd side-effect...

Frankly, I'm amazed it took you that long.

Yeah, well. I'm slow on the uptake sometimes.

Slash, among other things, being discussed right here, campers.
