i found this thread while looking for info about a beer diet, namely: if one is going to live largely on beer for a short period (2 or 3 days), what supplementary foods should be eaten?
im putting this question out there, and id appreciate detailed answers.
since its just for a few days, i dont care so much about weight gain or heart disease. more important is maintaining my brain function, not getting constipated or flatulent, not messing with my sleep patterns, not getting ill, not sweating gravy...
im thinking fruit for vitamins, and meat for protein and iron. now im a (sort of) vegetarian, so meat isnt really appetizing to me, so maybe i will go for some fortified soy protein shakes or something. or more likely, i will enjoy a fat burger and then stick to fruit.
i found a few pages on the 'drinking man's diet' (in a book from the 50s or 60s? and an allan sherman song which i want to hear), which is basically low carb so that you can get your carbs from alcohol, which apparently helps you to burn fat. so alcohol and steak and eggs. however, they recommend whisky and martinis rather than beer. not sure if theres any reason for that, since all alcoholic drinks are basically alcohol and water, right?
here is a somewhat elderly interview with dr ornish, who is one of the anti-atkins fuddy-duddies. he basically says that atkins works because it gets people to eat less refined sugar and white flour and potato chips. its a trick: how can we get people to stop eating these horrible processed foods without saying 'stop eating that'? the answer is to tell them what awful, addictive foods they can still eat. so dr atkins doesnt say 'youre cutting a bunch of crap out of your diet'. he says 'look at all the crap you can still eat and lose weight, as long as you get rid of the worst crap'. and thats why its a fad, because its a trick. people with heart disease risk are probably going to die faster on atkins. but young fat people will probably benefit.
im pretty young, and ive never been obese, but the most effective diet ive ever tried simply involved cutting out sweets. no candy or pastries or soda. i ate sweetened jam (jelly? preserves?) but not often (a matter of personal preference-- i mention it because my girlfriend at the time couldnt wrap her mind around this, that i would cut out sugar and still eat jam; she was more of a jam fiend though). i ate potato chips when i wanted an unhealthy snack. i drank little apart from water. (i dont remember what my alcohol consumption habits were at that time, but thats never been a problem for me, despite what you may think from the opening to this post.) i managed a piece of birthday cake for rituals, and i didnt turn down a single candy if somebody offered. after a couple months, i stopped craving sweets entirely. somehow they insidiously came back into my life (i think via home-baked cookies), but ive never gone back to the soft pimply mess i was in high school. and i recall my time on that diet as the best period of my life. |
