Buckle your swashes and bucken your eers. The new trailer for the Pirates of the Caribbean movie is out and it be lookin' like it might be fine booty indeed. Arrrrrr. Maybe they'll film a sequel where the Pirates hang the Country Bears by the yardarm.

And doesn't Depp make a good rogue scoundrel?

Finally, a hollywood movie that deals with the important things in life.

Ar,ha,har, bring it on!

Two words, gentlemen. Cutthroat Island.
Or is that three words?
Personally I'm still holding out for Monkey Island the movie.

Rouge scoundrel, more like: did you see how much eyeliner he had on? Enough to make Robert Smith cry, "Easy, big fella!"

My god, that was Johnny Depp? I thought it was Claudia Schiffer!

And before there was Cutthroat Island, Roman "Best Director" Polanski made Pirates.

And before there was Cutthroat Island, Roman "Nonce of B-Wing" Polanski made Pirates.

Which was better than 'pyrates' at least. I still wake in the night screaming.

I wonder how many ninja were injured during the filming of this motion picture.

I thought Johnny Depp would make a good Kennit (yes, I spend an unfortunate amount of time casting for imaginary films of my favourite books, in this case - Robin Hobb's Liveship trilogy). How wrong I was.

saw it last night. it OWNS.

so much fun. i mean, the movie starts with a British ship sailing through the fog, the camera eventually settling on a young girl leaning over the rail.

she whispers: "yo, ho, yo, ho, a pirate's life for me..."

i was giddy as a schoolgirl.

anyway, swashbuckling and cursed treasure and ghost ships and swordfights and walking the plank and rum and parrots and wenches and AN UNDEAD MONKEY.

also, Johnny Depp is truly, truly weird and wonderful in this movie.

Yep. Can't wait. Videodrome's IM-sent review the other day contained the words "ghost pirate monkey" which has me all fucking set.

Except for the fact that Lithuania gets to see the damn film before we do. Fuck's sake. September? Jesus.

It's a lot of fun, if you like adventure that doesn't take itself too seriously. Depp is a joy, Rush takes great mouthfuls of script and scenery and gulps them down with relish, while Bloom does a good turn as the straight man/square jaw of the thing. The script is pretty smart - for a summer blockbuster - and I was consistently entertained, twice. Once at the work in progress screening a couple weeks back and again when it opened and I took some friends.

It's way too long - like half an hour too long - which does some damage, but it really is a good time. It and X2 are the only two blockbusters I've liked almost without reservation this year.

And, hell! Skeletal cursed monkey. Say no fucking more.

It rewards those who sit through the (rather long) credits. Oh yes, it does.

And the skeletal crew, fading in and out of the moonlight... brilliantly consistent.

Geoffrey Rush actually says, "Arrr!" and the thing is... you believe it. I want to know how I can get a job as dialect coach for a movie like that.

Depp was a bit like Hunter S. Pirate there, wasn't he? Not that I'm complaining, it worked well, but I think there was just a wee character bleedover there.

Anyone else notice that the moon is always full, and that somehow dead pirates manage to keep lots of fresh food handy? I try mentioning these things at the film and people just poke me with "shut up, its a pirate movie!"

But yea, it would only be better if it were rated ARRRRRRR!

Oh, and stick around after the credits, there's a bit they run at the end that's cute.

Actually, I think the first moon was a half moon.
And the whole Keef thing makes sense for a guy who was

marooned on a desert island with nothing but rum to drink for three days. I mean, imagine what that does to your nervous system.

Just finally saw it today. Johnny Depp rocks. Jack Sparrow must have a new term for the sheer stupendousness of his suaveity (and eyeliner)-- Swishbuckler.

Speaking of character bleedover, do you think they meant for Orlando Bloom to pick up Sparrow's mannerisms so much, or do you chalk that up to admiration and the creeping awareness that he just doesn't have Depp's onscreen charisma?

Depp, on his appearance:

I knew that I wanted to have the dreads, and things tied into my hair, like things I’d picked up on voyages and whatnot. Kinda like Keith, because he has stuff like little coins and beads in his hair. So I wanted that, and the little braids and dingles on them. The coal on my eyes came from – you know how athletes wear black, for reflection? And I started thinking about the Toregs in Northern Africa and the Berbers, who put coal under the eyes and have done so for thousands of years, which is medicinal in a way, and protects the eyes from wind, sand and sun.

Bloom, on being like Depp:

I got a little bit of fun doing the impression of Johnny in the film. I envied him so much, because he just creates these fucking unbelieveable characters. You read the script and you don’t see that character on the page, but Johnny just takes what’s there and creates – that. It’s his thing, and it’s amazing. I loved it, and I was just so envious that it was him doing it. And I wanted to have a little piece of it. We talked about it and he encouraged the impression; Jerry agreed we should write it in. I was so happy to see it in the movie.

Saw it last night... Amuzing.

Some really funy bits and overall well cast & acted... the story got flat for me as everyone kept switching ships. there was a strange sence of time as well... as if all the islands involved where less than a days journey from each others.

Also, strange cause & effects... a ship blows up and it take a charactor less then a minute to swim from the wreackage of one ship to the other ship and climb up on deck...

the movie should've been rated ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR...

On Bloom being like Depp:

Well, a little bit of both, then. Thanks for the insightful quotes, video. Where'd you find them?

On Depp being like Depp:

The costuming and appearance decisions were one thing, the-- sashaying-- was another. That's why he deserves to be called a swishbuckler.

I (a lubber, admittedly) was impressed by the research they seemed to have done into naval maneuvering and combat.

And in several instances they did show the scale of the ships, and the amount of time and effort necessary to board them, as much as possible without interrupting the rhythm of the scene. I was astonished by the particular scene you're describing, though, Tricks.

Apparently sequel(ae) is(are) in the works, already. Interesting...

Yeah, that's part of the reason for the Curse of the Balck Pearl subtitle, added late in the game. Most of the cast seems to be signed for a sequel and Depp sounds enthusiastic about doing it,given proper script and whatnot.

The quotes come from interviews I did with the cast about a month ago. All of them were good to talk to, but Davenport was easily the most amusing.

re: the swishbuckling, there was a bit from Depp I forgot to include, where he explained his hand and arm movements as the look of a man perpetually holding a martini glass. But I think that general statement has made the rounds by now, anyway.

Finally saw the film this weekend. What a great time! So much more fun than I expected.

Gareth the Pirate! I'm never going to be able to watch The Office again without expecting Gareth to pop his eye out ("Tim! Give it back!").

HERE THERE BE SPOILERS

...

Not so keen on the end, though. "We'll let the pirate go, then. So long." "And Daddy, I'm going to disobey you all and marry this man. He's a pirate too!" "Well, all right then."

And I was one of only four people in the theater who stayed until the very end and caught the clip. Monkey!!! ... I can't believe how early people started leaving. Some of them started to leave during the final scene, before the film had even ended! And then they noticed that there was still content left so they hovered in the doorway for a while. Disruptive bastards.

I am so all over this like cheap cooking oil when it comes out. Any film with Geoffrey Rush and Jonathan Pryce in it must be worth a dekko.

I was all for staying out of the ninja/pirate debate as it started when I was offboard, but now I've got to come out as a pirate. The day they make Ninjasof the Caribbean , I may reconsider. Me hearties.

That. Totally. Fucking. Rocked.

I'd kind of wondered what the fuck the whole Johhny Depp basing a pirate on Keith Richards thing was all about... now all I can say is it makes perfect sense.

Zombies. Pirates. A monkey (a zombie pirate monkey at that). And there was even a dwarf, one thing I feared the movie may be lacking. And a parrot that talks entirely in pirate cliches, and as a result means most of the really cheesy dialogue ISN'T said by the actual characters... another nice touch.

Added to which, everyone in it really seems to be having a great fucking time, which is always nice to see.
