Ari Up has done a solo reggae album. Anyone heard it and know if it's any good?

I just went to see the new Slits last night in Melbourne. It was pretty great. Not quite as good as if I'd managed to see the old Slits live in 1976, but great nonetheless. Only two members of the old band are in the new lineup -- Ari Up, of course, and bassist Tessa Pollitt. They're playing a lot of reggae and some of the old punk songs from Cut etc, a bit more reggae'd up than they were.

I don't usually like reggae but I liked this. Musically, they're not magnificent except at moments; in terms of charisma and stage presence, though, amazing. Ari Up is completely fucking NUTS. She's really hyper, like a reggae cheerleader my friend said. And her outfits were awesome. She gives out prizes to audience members who are good with the Slits trivia, too. The crowd was pretty small, much smaller than usual gigs at the venue they played at. But the audnece were also kind of devoted -- lots of old ex-punks and really geeky music nerds. But it was an awesome gig. Totally worth going. Especially for the pleasure of hearing "Shoplifting" done live....

Gradually falling in love with the first album, I just 'loaded the second one, Return Of The Giant Slits and remain unsure of what to think.

It's taken further away from punk: the opening track, Earthbeat is a tribal exercise of sorts, bass and beats rumbling along; over it Ari's voice for the most part rather surprisingly high and girly, with less of the off-key fun of the previous album, along with this very constant guitar hook. Less all-over the place, but still energetic and oddly addictive.

The rest hasn't yet quite caught my ear, except for Face Place with backing, hum, tuba?, harmonica, and... is that xylophone? My, these ears suck. And... dramatic piano. And high-pitched yipping. You'd think "Drunk Björk" would equal "duh, Björk", but as it turns out, it's "Ari Up". Very strange in mood, very good. Easy to get lost in, for me.

Yet to get to know the rest well enough. But what do you lot think of it?
