Co-opting the Subaltern

Picked up on this idea in the PS2/subversion thread, where it was dubbed [aptly, I feel] the "Rage against the Machine Problem."

While this idea is most commonly tossed about on this board vis-a-vis anti-globalization...which seems to me to [sadly] be one of the fastest-converted ideas yet, I was trying to think of other realms/categories in which this kind of absorption process has occurred. One that I think is an interesting comparison is the [British] colonial project of encoding/calcifying indegenous thought systems into something digestable for consumption by a reading public in Europe.

Any thoughts?, he asked expecting to be showered in poo.

Next bit:

Is there any way to halt this co-opting process, especially given the irony that marketing provides, at least superficially, a larger spectral audience even as the "message" is diluted.
And is it useful to counteract cooption with the implementation of standards of authenticity?
