Could these fists be the coolest things ever?

Oho yes.

Allow me to illustrate:

Hello
Here in vancouver I had the same sort of experience. After the anti-war rally a group of 60 or more stuck around for another 3 hours. There were drums, guitars, flutes, children dancing, even a poet. I will never forget the moment. The heart beat was so loud and now I know why. Brothers and Sisters all around the world felt it.

Yeah, the carnival atmosphere is the best part. We had the All-American Skeleton band march in ours a month ago. It's great seeing all the various banners and signs.

Except tonight in Chicago where half my friends get arrested for it.

Ack. Didn't mean for that last post to be snide or bitter or anything. I'm just sort of in "shock and awe" by seeing people carted off en masse to detention centers while wet, cold and pressed against a newspaper stand for hours...

Sorry Tower. Us UK people sometimes forget how heavy stateside cops are. I hope you're friends don't get charged, or that if they do, it's nothing too serious.

Fucking hell!
Police in San Francisco have arrested 1,025 people during violence at an anti-war demonstration.

Fuck.

Will someone Stateside tell me what this means? Is this good (i.e. putting the shits up Bush et al), or will the poor bastards get charged with terrorism or something and be in serious shit?

Our Lady of The Two Towers

From my outsiders perspective, are the police generally likely to do this kind of shit whenever there's any kind of protest, or are they hyped up by Bush and just hiting out at something they perceive, rightly or wrongly, as lacking popular support? I'm wondering, after the police behaving themselves on anti-war marches, what their behaviour is going to be like on Mayday.

The police emphatically *didn't* behave themselves on the 15th Feb anti-war demo in New York, for example. I think there's a real transatlantic difference here, which reflects the fact that in the UK the media seems to be treating the anti-war demo as a serious popular movement - don't get the impression that's the case in the US...

After I left the protest in Cardiff last night the protestors were shepherded in to a side street and the police beat the shit out of them and arrested about ten people. I had a chat with my philosophy lecturer about getting the law dept down there next time, he was on the spot and described it as unjustified. I put the brutality down to the fact that the Welsh officers have no experience of this kind of thing- they're limited to football crowds usually who ignore them completely- and were getting desperate but I was seething earlier.

Blah. Am up, but off to bed now - have been packing stuff to return home for three weeks. I hate packing. Still, will be home and onto flaky 56k again tomorrow. And despite being on slower access, will probably start properly responding to posts for once in my life...

Blah.

At home. Listening to The Misfits. Wondering why in fuck Pepsi Max and I went to that party last night. Bah.

I should be working, but have been drawn to the net. Earlier on this evening I listened to an amazingly passionate speech by Norman Mailer (he's now 80) on why and how America has got to this point regarding the war with Iraq. Called 'Only in America' it was first delivered to the Commonwealth Club of California in San Francisco on 20th Feb (commonwealthclub.org) and then broadcast on ABC Radio National here tonight simultaneously with its national broadcast in America. The man's analysis is too multipartite and complex to sum up quickly here; but he was breathtakingly outspoken about Bush's brand of Christianity, logic, rhetoric and push for world empire. Apparently a version of the speech will also appear in The New York Review of Books on March 27.

I'm about. Getting mopey as a really good friend of mine disappears overseas tomorrow, for the next two years. Sigh.

Friends are so unreliable but luckily there are always more people lurking about to fill the gaps... well you've got to hope anyway!

I'm off to bed now; have packed up all my stuff and begun unpacking it, piddled around on computer, done some reading... am now sleeping for a very long while in my own bed. Cannot wait. Things are good, I think...

We-hell. It's night time, I can breathe, the air in my room is weirdly warm and I am so awake. The world is just telling me to get in my car and listen to (Nina Simone or maybe Joy Division or maybe Underworld) a CD and driiivvveeeee and smoke. Yay... the freedom of being at home and your housemates not freaking about your sleeping pattern!

Thanks Maz. Just a bit weird: I guess now I know how it must've been for some people when I had to leave - I heard a couple of times how I must've been doing well to keep it together, but I guess that the traveller is the one for whom it's easier: there's always the rise in the road, the new adventure of a new locale. For those that's left behind, there's really just the awareness of the gap in things where the person who's away used to fit.

Bah. Wine tonight? Quite possibly. Certainly a metric arseload of it tomorrow, which is actual d-day.

The Return Of Rothkoid

Yep. Feeling arsetrumpet. As predicted. Plane goes in two-and-a-half hours.

Anyone up and about? I'm supposed to be writing a paper, but I'm pretty much actively not. Anybody wanna help out with that? (The helping me not work, not the paper. That I can handle. I'm just... not... right now.)

Tryphena Absent
22:37 / 24.03.03
You're not alone... I'm meant to be writing my dissertation so obviously I'm reading ficlets about Malfoy. I might have to go and scream in a minute.

Mazarine
22:59 / 24.03.03
Heh. I'm meant to be writing a paper for my theater 680, but I'm writing Angel ficlets instead. As for my paper, so far I have "Aristotle discusses the role of the"

And that would be it. That, and I'm suffering from a chunk of missing time. Maybe it's the extra daylight.

Same boat here, unfortunately, although mine's undoubtedly a lot simpler to do.

Or would be, if it weren't for the fact that, this being a programming course and all, 98% of the students on it have never been asked to write anything totalling more than - get this - 2,500 words long, and the university isn't about to start doing so, either. So I'm stuck with a completely unreasonable word limit within which it's impossible to provide anything like a satisfying, comprehensive report.

On the plus side, I've got the Junior Senior album playing and it's big-stupid-grin fantastic.

Yo. Me here. The plane took off about two minutes ago. Just feeling quite sad. Listening to Mazzy Star isn't helping, I suppose.

Oh, huggles Roth. : (

Yes, Mazzy Star is never a good thing when one is down. Unless they're live in the living room. Thats got to be a real pick-me-up.

For fuck's sake, why is the first new ep of Buffy in like a month on the night before I have a 15 pager due? Does mutant enemy want me to have to hunt squirrels for food? Does Joss Whedon want me to go back to my ancestral roots of roadkill as a tasty snack?

Um. I'm up. Anyone else?

The Return Of Rothkoid

Yep. Elliott Smith's second on the CD player. Not improving, eh?

Bah. How you?

I'm listening to the Dandy Warhols mostly, drinking pink lemonade and talking about Tiresias, and wishing that I hadn't dropped that desk on my leg earlier today because the bruise is distracting. I'm also trying to figure out where the hell last week went, because I seem to be missing a pretty large chunk of time.

Saint Keggers

What's Tiresias?
