"'Cool' is a mid-level interpersonal dominance strategy based on contempt and used to impress and intimidate the weaker members of society without antagonising the strong."

Discuss.

You mean one who is cool, right? Not using the word.

Nah. Being cool is more like being confident enough with life that they don't have to use these kinds of techniques. It is impressive because so few people are this confident.

People who TRY to be cool, though. I could believe that.

Cool is a defensive strategy.

See "Rebel Without a Cause" for further definition, as well as exploration of the alienated/alienating effects of "cool."

quote:"'Cool' is a mid-level interpersonal dominance strategy based on contempt and used to impress and intimidate the weaker members of society without antagonising the strong."

in fact, if your midlevel strategy is cool enough, the really strong (CEOs of multinationals etc.), will hunt the cool factor down and attempt to market it to the rest of us poor snivveling intimidated members of society, until it becomes utterly uncool. meanwhile, you, the cool one, will have moved on to some other midlevel strategy, and probably one expropriated from Black culture (at least in the US).

(a question pops into my mind: does coolness function/work like Lacan's notion of the phallus?)

Who is more cool? The cool, or the cool who follows the cool?

I know these kids who try to be cool by talking about how there is no cool. They don't realize how uncool it is to be trying to be cool by deconstucting the word cool. Silly children.
