Really interesting thread this - I was mugged once when I lived in Glasgow, and it didn't really bother me all that much. What was irritating (and weirdly depressing) was when I moved to a small village/town just outside Stirling. I still worked in Glasgow and had to get the train home in the evenings (round about 10:30pm), and virtually every night I would have to walk the gauntlet of drunken neds shouting abuse at me from the other side of the road. I was never threatened physically, but I found every experience in this small town much more frustrating and depressing than being mugged and half-beaten up in the Big City. Now I live in London, and although I've been here for a year or so, I've never experienced any hassle or abuse. I'm convinced it's the Scottish accent - people down here must think I'll turn into Begbie from Trainspotting if I'm provoked! |
