Yep. That's pretty much the least likely expalnation you could possibly have chosen.

Trust me on this one, Aus - "ginger" as rhyming slang for "queer" is a lot more common than awareness of the Daily Express' cartoon page. I know this sounds peculiar to anyone outside the UK, but that's just the way it goes. The most usual use of the term is to describe somebody with ginger hair, which would make sense if ic had any idea of Ganesh's hair colour, or indeed if his justification had been less garbled and nonsensical. Since neither of these is the case, I think it's reasonable to assume that impish Ginger Meggs is not being referenced, subliminally or no.

Well, I orginally read the "ginger" slur on the GNN board and it ws in the context of a very aggressive post, so I'm guessing it was intentional. He seems to be English, as he's aware of the anti-war demo on Saturday.

I don't think he'll react well to having all his threads removed from the Conversation as he seemed to be relishing the attention _ obviously "the people" need to hear his message, and see the threats rather astonishingly linking Barbelith to the WTO - but bearing in mind the anti-gay shit and his general refusal to listen and change tack, good move.

InnerCircle subsequently gave two 'explanations' of the term 'ginger boy', on GNN and here. Initially, he claimed he was making reference to "the plant of health giving properties" (y'know, like y'do mid-argument) then subsequently insisted he was referring to my hair - if we'd both been Australian.

I'm sure if he'd thought of the Daily Express cartoon character (and a quick straw poll of colleagues throws up absolutely no-one who's even heard of him), he'd have given that 'explanation' also - or perhaps he was referring to some Ginger Rogers style notion of my dancing abilities? Perhaps 'Cox' likened Xoc to English apples, or his boating skills?

I know which is the most likely explanation, Aus, given the context. You might disagree but the point is, he knew he was causing offence and he carried on regardless. I asked him - very nicely - to modify his posts. He ignored me.

I agree with Fridgemagnet that yeah, there'll be the usual round of complaints, spamming retaliations, etc., etc. I do think this is a rather elegant initial step, though. Like trapping the Lloigor inside Chimaera...

Yay Persephone, for thinking this up in the first place (the "Replace Tom's Camera" appeal used a similar pocket universe)...

As far as moderating his threads to remove the 'ginger's and 'Cox's, I did consider that. Previous moderator actions have indicated, however, that selective tampering with other people's posts - even in a comparitively minor way - is a big no-no, arguably less acceptable, generally, than outright deletion. Also, while the original epithets aren't relevant to InnerCircle's ongoing argument, the ensuing discussion (prompted, I'm sure, by my objection to and his continued use/justification of 'ginger') covers a fair amount of post-space. I'd have been happy to excise my part of that argument, as would Xoc and Haus and, I suspect, others - but InnerCircle himself has not given his consent. If we'd gone ahead regardless and removed huge chunks of his later posts, I'm pretty sure he'd have been incandescent.

So... this is Plan B.

Actually, hold on a minute (casts mind back)... If I recall correctly, when I was at primary school it was considered perfectly acceptable to ridicule other kids for their health-giving properties... ahh yes, the old slurs of "vitamin-boy", "lots-of-friends" and even "a nice lie-down somewhere"... how we laughed as they kicked our heads in for being wankers.

Actually, hold on another minute... I don't recall correctly.

Ok - so they've been deleted - Shall we set up the thread with the links?

Yeah - I'll go do that now. I think we should leave this one for the time being, though, for the inevitable discussion of the reasoning behind the moderator decision.

Sorry, haven't been around here for a while and missed most of this. But am popping up to say that as one of the evil moderators in question, I think the thread-linking solution is a good one - in the face of the kind of stuff thats been posted and the total lack of response on-board from IC it's probably the best way to go in terms of avoiding the censorship issue.

That's with moderator hat on.

Personally, I'd also've been quite happy to give IC fair warning, and delete the worst posts. This stuff is foul, and as MC has pointed out, there's a great big networld where its passes, and I have no problem with saying taht it doesn't *here*.

And in addition, know we don't usually do this, but want to say that *I approved* a couple of the requests in setting up the new thread with links.

Just want to clarify- Ganesh, you've PMed Innercircle to let him know what has happened, yes? And I know he knows how to use PMs. So if he starts up any threads in Conversation that are basically 'where have my threads gone! You've censored them!' it's okay for moderators to mark them for deleted pretty much automatically?

Ganesh
12:28 / 12.02.03
Yes. I linked here from 'Knocking on Heaven's Door' and 'Intelectual Collective' then, when he seemed to disregard the links (other than "garnish, dude butt out"), I PMed him and asked him to read this thread because we needed to know which, if any, option he'd prefer (outright deletion, mutual self-moderation, forced moderation, 'pocket universe' threads, etc.); I also emphasised that there was a chance we'd go for outright deletion.

I PMed him again with notice that we were going to proceed as suggested on this thread - but I've no idea whether he's read this thread. I'm now about to PM him again with more specific information on what we've done with his threads.

And yeah, if he starts any 'where have my topics gone' threads, direct him here and to the index thread, then move to delete 'em.

Yay Persephone, for thinking this up in the first place (the "Replace Tom's Camera" appeal used a similar pocket universe)...

Actually, there was a Magick thread about trolling that was used the same way before that. May have been others I didn't know about.

OK, I accept the prevailing definition of IC's use of the word "ginger" in terms of rhyming slang. I was just trying to think of alternatives, given that IC seems to be incapable of providing a reasonable explanation.

The "Ginger Meggs" reference is more fun, though.

Is it possible to also link to the "Australian Shark" thread there? (Not that I miss it, mind, but it seems like we may as well cover all bases if we're protecting ourselves from spurious "pc police" allegations). And if so, and if it's not a really bad idea, could someone who knows how to do it? Cos I'm too stupid.

Would it be useful to include a link to the GNN thread containing the material 'borrowed' from posters here?

Apparently the same as resurrecting this thread, which is why I let it drop.
