re: Salusa Secundus

You’re entirely right, Cholister. Salusa Secundus, third planet of Gamma Waiping, until the time of the Butlerian Jihad, was the imperial capital. It was the home planet of House Corrino and of Serena Butler herself. In the great war against the thinking machines, it was devastated by the use of atomics and this threw the planet off its axis, into a more distant orbit. This made conditions on the planet surface even more grim and unstable.

After removal of the Imperial Court to Kaitain, Salusa Secundus was designated the Imperial Prison Planet. It was also the second stopping point in the migration of the Wandering Zensunni who were enslaved there for nine generations but eventually settled on Dune and became the Fremen.

Shaddam IV, Padishah Emperor, also used it as the training ground for his elite Sardaukar troops, thereby keeping their strength and brutal efficiency hidden from his enemies.

It was also on Salusa Secundus that the Imperial Planetologist, Pardot Kynes, began his ecological studied, eventually to serve him well on Dune, where his son, Liet, carried forward his dream of greening that planet and freeing the Fremen.

God, it’s hard to keep the timelines clear in your head without the books to hand!

But, more importantly, WHY has shortfatdyke suddenly become Shortfatdyke? I feel the Earth move under my feet... I feel the sky tumblin' down, tumblin' down...

I did so change my nick. I put that stupid l33tesque @-sign in after the old board's suit-devouring monster ate my first incarnation. And I think I was Mordant "Bastard" C@rnival for a bit.

Mostly I just can't be arsed, and the damn thing's too long anyway. I've had other nicks at other times. When I first started pottering about in Cyberspace I used the name on my birth certificate (and even had my CV online), but since I have a very common real name it eventually seemed more practical to make something up.

"But, more importantly, WHY has shortfatdyke suddenly become Shortfatdyke?"

Because, Xoc, it makes me feel more grown up. Yes, it's that pathetically simple. I used to post with no initial caps in my text, and I stopped doing that because it appeared lazy and juvenile (although that might just have been the content of my posts....) so I've altered my name to fit. Anyway, that's rich coming from someone who spells 'Sock' in a funny way.

And I know all about Cholister. Oh yes.

Thank you, Xoc! You so rule.

I still mantain that Shortfatdyke should at least be ShortFatDyke - it's more...symmetrical, somehow.

Sorry to appear haf-way through the thread - I've been kinda out of barbe-action for a while. I have become strangely paranoid about this place, but that's another post. But this one got me thinking.

People who know me in real life, know that I changed my "real" name (whatever that means), and I've spent a lot of time on my identity. I think it's confusing enough for me, but dastardly unfair to those who know me to wonder which name I'm using today. Same online. I kinda admire people who add witty suffixes so you still know it's them, but also how funny they are. I'm not that funny. When people change names completely I feel a strange sense of discombobulation, like there are no fixed points in the world (which there aren't). Also, I like the lispy, devilish femininity of my ficsuit (or, that's how I meant it), though I suspect in retrospect I may have mispelled it.

I guess, also, that that whole thing that happens online sometimes, of people retrospectively changing what they say - not here, of course - frustrates me, and I like to show myself in all my frailty and imperfection. If I chose a "bad" ficsuit, I have to live with it. I may be babbling now... I'll get my coat.

Bill Posters
12:10 / 09.02.03
What Barry and Jack Fear and Lilith said. Half my IRL name for ease of IRL meets, I need to be open or the paranoia would kill me, and I feel it's best - if tough - to show one's imperfections. I know who I am, you know who I am. Kodge prolly knows where I live, but that's not a big deal. I guess.

Also, because as I have said before, Bill Posters is innocent. He was beaten up and fitted up and I'm gonna find out what he's gonna go down for and launch a campaign to free him. This is a preliminary publicity-raising drive.

Lilith's fic-name always made me think of the first wife of Adam, with the 'Myth' part perhaps her suffering from some existential doubt as to whether or not she actually exists or not. And Shortfatdyke being grown up. Chyeah right...

Xoc pronounced sock, Sfd, how dare you! Feetphobic as I am, this association had not previously occurred to me and will now rob me of sleep. Being an aristocratic SM bottom from Maya times, Lady Xoc's name is spelt thus because the conquistadores (ya, boo, hiss) were attempting to transliterate a name that the Maya pronounced "Shok" which, obviously, I chose in tribute to another legendary figure: SHOrtfatdyKe.

I am inclined to take a lead from Rothkoid, however, and pronounce it Chaussette in future. I shall be henceforward known as La Chaussette Noire, acolyte of his original Chaussette Bleue.

Persephone
18:32 / 09.02.03
I thought it was pronounced "zosh"... the "x" like "z", and the "oc" as in "Soc" in S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders. "Soc" being short for socialite, if I remember rightly.

Could be short for ZoCher then. Hmmm, now you've got me all confused. Perhaps you should just call me Londinium Rotundium like the evil hana_bi does.

I'm with Persephone on the Xoc/zosh thing, right down - bizarrely - to the Hinton/Soc reference. Just figured it was an abbreviation.

On the Lilith Myth name - just for completeness' sake, rather than anything else - Flowers, not sure if you're talking about my existential doubt or the orgininal Lilith's.

Part of the reason I chose the name is that Lilith has been
"reclaimed" in recent years by Jewish feminists as an example of strong independent womanhood, whereas the "myth" always was that she was evil; Lilith was demonized by early Jewish culture as a symbol of promiscuity and disobedience (which, frankly, is right up my street).

Stone Mirror
01:27 / 10.02.03
I think of "Stone Mirror" as being akin to a brand name, if you will. I stand behind what I say, and I want people to know that. My "online presence", in whatever form or forum, is either "StoneMirror" or some extremely close variant thereof.

Pseudonymity only has value, as far as I can see, if one is consistent. I guess if you don't expect people to have positive associations with your "name", then you might be inclined to swap it out more often...

Hey! There should be a thread for those who change their names, reporting their name, what they're changing it to, and maybe, why.

(I lose track otherwise, you know)

deja_vroom

My basic name here is Jade Emperor/Imperador de Jade, the latter being the Portuguese translation of the former. Once in a while I change it to Impostor de Jade and from there to many other witless variations (uh-oh - new name coming up!). I've been Marquis and Marquee de Jade, and Jade's tricks, too, for a while.

I would love to change my suit completely and try new stuff, but that would be confusing. So whenever I change my suit I still have to stick a "Jade" in there somewhere. Which, given the well-known rigidness of this mineral, can be quite discomforting...

Well, it's my name. It's sorta my anti fiction-suit. When everyone else seemed so intent on suiting up for the ball, I came in wearing only my skin. Call it being reactionary. That said, I was Ramiel back in the Nexus days, and JC for about a month after Barbelith launched.

Wheeeeeee.
