I'm thinking Ganesh, Nick, Tom, Mordant... just wondering why you don't go for the whole changing name thing like the rest of us time-wasting fools. (I know Ganesh was once Ganesha and Tom has a good excuse) So why is it? Can't be bothered? Have the same ID for all your online activities? You secretely are innercircle?

I like my name. And now so many people have added little bits to their names that anything I added would just look derivative.

The Falcon

It's my (fucking) name.

I was thinking of adding "- sold his soul for a badge and a gun" at the end, but reading the above has made me realise how wrong that would be.

Although, in honour of the Tannhauser, I may call myself 'Deep Breaths Duncan' for a day or two. Or I may not.

We'll see.

I was going to add "lucky fingers" to my name because it sounds funny sometimes - but sometimes it doesn't so I shan't.

Flowers I would never class myself as inner circle although I'd be careful how you address the others you mentioned.

Why haven't I ever changed my name, good question. I guess the name is just comfortable for this stuff. I slip it on and go about my "cyber-business". I do use the name other the internet in most things I do (e-mail, chat rooms, etc).

I could change it I suppose, if only to make it easier to read as was noted in the parent thread of this one. maybe one day I will. Until then I will always be adamswish (apart from those days when I'm not).

I can't be bothered. If I want a name change I'll sign up a new suit and cause comic havoc by pretending to be someone else.

Plus people who change to super-long names (e.g. "Once we were Gary, Once we were Steve la la Tannhauser etc." get on my nerves because their names are often longer than their posts.

Plus I like my name and don't want to have to think up another punning soubriquet that suits me.

Plus I can't remember how to do it.

Kill this thread!

... err, sorry. Got away from me again.

The short answer is that those of us who don't change our names are secure and those who do are not.

Obvious, really.

Jack Fear
13:10 / 05.02.03
I use the same ID for all online activities, yes, and "Jack Fear" is more or less my birth name: the US postal service delivers mail addressed thus, anyway.

It's important to me to maintain a sort of transparency in all things, including on the Web–not by being aggressively confessional, but simply by being myself, and only myself. Maintaining a consistent name is part of that.

Sax
13:11 / 05.02.03
Largely I get pissed off when someone completely changes their name and I don't know who they are/were, which is why I never change mine. I started off as Doctor Sax, (from the Kerouac novel of the same name) but as I'm not a doctor I dropped the prefix. Fiction suits are handy emotive icons, and when you read a name like "Ganesh" or "Haus" you immediately attach a load of existing baggage to them, which is not necessarily a bad thing.

well I cut a sizeable chunk off my name today. Partly realisation that long names are a bit silly, partly in the hope that people will start humming the Velvet Undergrounds '..says' songs when they read my name.

Not only has that now happened, but I have an image of Riz as a scag-addled New York prostitute.

Haus, how *do* you keep doing that double post thing? Do you twitch as you hit the mouse button?

I've never changed my name, partly through laziness and partly because I get a bit annoyed when I have to struggle to keep up with who people are. And partly because I can't think of anything witty enough to add.

*cheerfully*

Fear! Fear that there would come the day when making up clever little flourishes for my ficsuit would not be fun. I'd drag on doing it for a little while longer, but the fun would be over. Then one day I would stop doing it; and it would be just me and my ficsuit, alone together, like strangers, not knowing what to say to each other.

I haven't changed my name cause....it's my name on this board.. Uhm... that's a good excuse, ain't it?

Solitaire Rose as Tom Servo
13:55 / 05.02.03
I have kept the same name for ages...Solitaire Rose is my common internet name, and I became a member of the Hong Kong Cavaliers back when Buckaroo Banzai first came out, and I added it to my name when the movie came out on DVD. I may take the Hong Kong part off at some point, but not for a while because I am painfully lazy.

There was less of it in the olden times when your location would always show with your posts, I think. I loved some of those locations and they told you a lot about the poster. Also changed frequently. Mordant lived in a shed in the Van Allen belt for a while, IIRC. Sax was Oop North. Without that avenue for reinvention and creativity, perhaps some feel the need to ring the changes more often.

You can still click on a poster's name and get their location, of course. Hence, my allegiance to Frank Herbet's Dune is rendered clear.

Frigging Herbert, of course. Something about this thread keeps giving me typos.

I created another suit years ago to de-lurk more without fear, but gave that up soon after. I wanted to change my suit to something that had some meaning or something, but unless I did it slowly, half a name at a time, no one would know who I am, so I'm Barry Auckland for times to come...

...It was nice in England to have people call me Barry in meat-space. Made the name more 'mine' I guess.

Some name-changing posters I lose track of and only realise who they were whenever a "where did your name come from" thread starts up, which can be a fun suprise.

Cholister? Dune? I can't remember the significance here. Nor of Salusa Secundus, when it comes to it.

I've read all 6 books, honest.

Salusa Secundus - prison planet, former base of the Emperor of the Known Universe before it got horribly fucked up.

Shaddam IV? I love that name. So 'Cholister' has nothing to do with Dune then?

If not, I assume you'll be keeping it secret.

The Return Of Rothkoid

Frankly, I couldn't be bothered. I'm lazy, and I like people to be able to go "ah! Him! What a guy!" or "Ah! That twart!" without much digging around. Saves time.

And I'd have to cultivate a whole new Aura of Suave to go with the new name. And it's so difficult to find a good tailor 'round here...

Shit! Where have I been?

Ganesh

I think maintaining the same name across message-boards gives a certain consistency and solidity. I dropped the 'a' certainly, because people assumed 'Ganesha' was female, and I went through a notable period of experimenting with different fiction-suits. I was never very good at sustaining the pretence, though; my boringly familiar only persona kept showing through. I guess I'm also more interested in trying to present the same identity in a variety of online contexts (hence 'Ganesh' in Fade2Black, ChristianBBS, GNN, Cross+Flame, etc.) than different identities in the same place.

I'm always quite careful to keep the 'Haus' stuff separate from 'Ganesh', though; the one time I accidentally allowed us to integrate fully wasn't pretty...

Dunno about that. I had great fun trying to tell you apart in the dark.

angel
13:21 / 06.02.03
Oh, you two! Behave!

I was originally Fallen Angel, and became angel due to a BBS hiccup.

angel is me, I am angel. I don't ever get the urge to change my name because I like it, it suits me and people don't have to keep guessing who the hell I am this week. It's some thing that just works for me.

Sometimes I wish I could be witty and clever with my suit name, but hey, I'm not that fussed about it really.

I'm lazy and if I changed my name it would be just weird, no one would know who I am , I don't post enough really anyway . It's also now my internet persona if I need a jolly pirate nickname, I honestly have no better ideas for names to change it to. Quite happy to run with it at the moment.

I think Salusa Secundus was before Shaddam IV's time, but I couldn't swear to it - Xoc?

And you're right, I'm keeping Cholister secret.

Of course, now I say too, but I kinda doubt that'll be enough to persuade Lou to write us another one..
