Just starting this up now, S7 starts Tomorrow night on sky. Here's hoping the season is a good one.

Oh, I've see ep one already and I want to know if anyone can spot the moment I nearly put my foot through the telly.

It's very good. I'm up to episode 11 so far and things are really starting to come to a head. Ahhh...the wonders of broadband connection...

Does anyone know which episode of Angel is airing immediately after?

Retrospective's already moaning.......Jesus...

You know, when I watch something I like, I want to gush - why the fuck is the first port of call for loads of 'lithers gripesville.

Don't think I'll frequent the Buffy thread much this season - it's always so depressing. I'll just go and froth and bubble over it w/ my IRL chums and leave the Haterz to it.

I think I may be able to make it to the Buffy Buffet....

I've seen up to episode 6 thanks to the groovy Elijah D Pressed, I really liked them and if season 7 continues the same way it'll be a good season to finish on.

So I'm guessing that the new series will be starting on BBC2 around say.. 2012?

Actually I really enjoyed it, thought it was the best first episode of a Buffy season so far, may it continue to live up to its promise! The characterisation was back to its standard, Spike's new hair made me smile, Alyson Hannigan wasn't quite on form but she seemed to have a cold so I'll forgive her! Dawn wasn't as irritating as usual and (thank god) they're already introducing an evil that the last season sorely lacked. Slowly getting back on form? I can only hope.

Twasn't the best. What about Buffy vs Drac?

Nice and light and eased us in and set things up and I have no idea what infuriated Retro so much he wanted to chin the telly.

So, that Principle....totally evil, or what? Spent ages setting him up for a start, and the Hellmouth underneath his office? And, c'mon, he just wants to keep an eye on Buffy. The double bluff didn't work on me.

And the end (I'm so pleased I didn't spoil this stuff for myself) I nearly shat. First of all "Wha', Warren?!?!" and then..."Eh?" and finally..."I know what this is! Bring on the fucking Master!" And we just knew who the final baddy would be, didn't we? The writing team were one step ahead of me with all my ranting about the Master and how he has to come back and be the principle bigbad, 'cause he's Buffy's "evil Dad". The real wrongDad's the Hellmouth and the final obstacle has to be Buffy herself. So....this time it's the evil of Sunnydale itself made flesh, and we're gonna walk throught the faces it has worn one by one by one? Skill. Completely skill. And, yes, a perfect capper to the show. This is where the big wound gets healed. Sunnydale, shut yer mouth.

Nope, I don't look at it like that, exp.

They want to bring it all home this season - they're going for the heart. And they should. I think yr whole thing misses the point of what the Buffy team are trying to do.

Seth
20:57 / 17.01.03
Not missing the point, as such. At the time I just didn't think it was a good idea, period. Later developments in the season seem to make it more interesting though. I just thought it was cheap, and in a way I still do.

The Drac episode was completely disconnected from the rest of the season though the gender comment was a continuation of a theme. This is leading somewhere and being a giant story arc fan I'm really anticipating where it's leading!

Do you see how runce, having consulted his Buffy palantir, knows exactly what the Buffy team are 'trying to do'? Do you see how he automatically dismisses anyone differing with him as 'having something wrong with them', or 'having badly misunderstood'?

I haven't seen it yet, but I'm looking forward to doing so. Early word says that the horrors of season shit may be nothing more than an almighty blip. Although exp is rigt when he says that they've not really paid enough attention to story since the end of season three. But, again, this does look hopeful...

What was the gender comment in the Dracula episode? I mussed have missed that...

11:32 / 18.01.03
I wouldn't worry about it, Fly. It was one of the worst episodes I've ever seen. Don't go back to eat that shit again in the hope that you'll find a raisin.

wasn't lead to believe by the bit at the end that we'd be fighting all the old baddies again, just that the baddy this time can look like anyone, so lots of confusing is-it isn't-it shenanigans i expect. this baddy too is from an old episode, where angel is harried by the ace of evil or somesuch, which takes the form of his old victims. like back then, it's only picking on spike because it's scared of him because he now [vamp w. soul] qualifies for the prophecy thing that's supposed to end buffy. and that chick at the start, how'd she get up that building? someone's killing off 'slayers in potentia', that's what i reckon

(Woman wins again- Giles is conquered by strange women in basement (three sisters? - I forget again), Xander is conquered by homosexual charm of Dracula, Buffy is woman and beats strange mind control.

Back to the beginning: Xander falls off skateboard, Giles is shamed for English wussiness, Buffy could be popular. Yay. Women are better then men, gender type reversal, gender comment.

I don't like the Drac episode either, it doesn't fit together properly, too rushed and a bit boring plus Dracula is kind of lame - but the joke at the end is quite funny. Back to season 7)

Neither was I, glassonion. I', simply saying that it's a cheap trick to increase tension in the final season, using a device that isn't appropriate for either the character witnessing it (he never knew the Mayor) or Buffy herself (Angelus isn't represented). As such it's designed to work solely from the viewers perspective, ergo pointing out that it's more about audience manipulation than it is about good storytelling. I'm just hpoing that they don't try to reverse engineer so kind of series arc in season seven...

The Big Bad for this season is obviously the darkness from Alan Moore's Swamp Thing books. It's already appeared in Buffy once before, that awful Christmas episode in the third season where Angel is tormented by the 'ghost' of Jenny Callender.

"and I have no idea what infuriated Retro so much he wanted to chin the telly."

The bit was when Warren morphed into Glori. Fuck, for a second I was ready to put the telly out the window.
I though that it wasn't the master as the bad guy, the bad guy seems to be Evil itself.
ooops.

The First Evil. Is exactly what it says it is on the tin. Or is pretending to be.

A little worried... because I thought that Buffy and Angel were moving beyond the first few seasons' simplistic good/evil stereo/archetypes, and I don't like to see a return to binary oppositions. But still looking forward to it (having to wait until the videotape makes its way to me is a pain in the ass).

Or maybe not - Just found a site with all the episodes to download in bite sized little chunks, it's made me a very happy bear.

If anyone wants the URL PM as I'd rather not post it up, these sites tend to get closed down quickly if hundreds or people start using them all of a sudden.

(Also got the Rumble if anyone want's that?)

I love the Web!

I can't believe no one wants to talk about this season, even the Breeders on stage in the Bronze didn't get you talking. It took a while for it to get in it's stride but I feel were almost up to speed.
Conversations with dead people set the horror of the Big Bad, and trying to get Willow to kill herself was harsh.
And how is Giles going to avoid the chop?

Oh and for the first time since S1, I'm riveted by Angel. It's about time one of these Apocalypses had fire, brimstone and a Tim Curry a like as the Evil.
Cool.

Yes, greatly enjoying this season. Looks like it's going to be nasty head-fuck mind games from here on in. "Early one morning..."
Maybe Giles has a protective spell, or a metal collar. Or maybe it's a comedy rubber axe. Bb-boooinnnnggg!!

I can't believe no one wants to talk about this season

I'd love to, but since I have broadband and access to various websites I'm getting my S7 Buffys about a day after they're first aired in the US, which means no discussion as anything I talk about is likely to contain spoilers. When the series has finished I suggest we all sit around with mugs of coco and discuss it then.

Seth
10:39 / 09.03.03
Retro: Is it really a series that warrants large amounts of discussion? Usually we'll have exhausted each episode after a couple of minutes down the pub. What is there to talk about?

i nearly spunked when wesley pulled the shotgun on the demon. and i like the way buffy having realised the fighting can't get much bigger now just makes the fight scenes smarter.

Reflect: I think I'd argue that the shape-shifter (Hellmouth, surely?) is the ultimate capper. The thing's there to allow the crew to process all their bad shit afore the credits roll. The "life replay" in the Buffy NearDeathExperience - Buffy-bardo.

The post-modern boiling point before the leap to the next level.

Etc.

And so what if the creators wanna get an "ooooh!" out of us? Damn right. It worked for me.

Retro: so....I'm guessing you HATE Glory, right? Adam's prolly my least favourite, TBH. The Ultimate Jock, yeah, but just not scaaaaary enough. As for the Master - I originally assumed he'd be the bigbad for the series, but I think my post above refers to the fact that the writers were one step ahead of me there. Regardless, I'm sure he'll be one of the last "faces" to show up.

Jack: I think Buffy's become MORE story-conscious since 3, not less (discarding the modular thing a lil bit in favour of a more soapy approach).

Call me slow, and forgive me if you've all got there already, but the Big Bad? It's the First Evil, isn't it? Y'know, the thing from 'Amends' in Season 3. Everything's there: the shapeshifting; turning people into mentalists; weirdy, cowled henchmen....

So...nice.

glassonion
10:47 / 12.03.03
well yes, that's fair, but not till i'd seen the first ep. after that i did scuttle back to the boxsets to check the 'dead by sunrise' baddy in the christmas episode - that ms calendar mmm. and then went to the spoilers. how do you know i saw the spoilers unless you saw them too too?

The Natural Way
11:41 / 12.03.03
'Cause there's always spoilers. And they're easy to find.

I just watched 'Amends' by accident and then went "hmmmmmm".

T'other week Ste-VD was going on about this BIG spoiler he knew about, but I told him to shut his maaaaaath. Speculation: last week, as Spike was about to bite Buffy to "make her weak", it hit me - what if this is the season Joss finally does it and vamps her? He's said he always wanted to...and this is the last season.

Further speculation: didn't the First Evil bring Angel back? Maybe, as we run up towards the end, it won't just be insubstantial brainfuck baddies Buffy and crew'll be dealing with. I mean, what the fuck's all the evil ritual for? I wonder.....

And assuming the First's badkrunts are attacking the Watchers, could the dead girlies be potential Slayers in training? The Buffy team are never very clear on all that business.
