The Bowyer experiment seems ultimately to have been a costly failure, in the sense that it might have contributed both to relegation and the Roeder's head exploding, but would things have gone any better without him?

It wasn't a costly failure. It was a laughably cheap one. West ham got an experienced international class player for almost nothing. Ok, he has been pretty anonymous since the transfer but it was still a good gamble. Considering the amount West Ham lose through relegation it was a tiny, tiny gamble.

True - his wages only came to about - what? - 300,000 or so? Plus 200,000 for the "nominal fee". That's not bad going at all for an international midfielder. I guess I was partly thinking of the damage done to West Ham's image and community projects as well...not to mention that if somebpody had played instead of Bowyer, and had been less anonymous, West Ham might have scraped another win somewhere along the line and thus avoided relegation. But that's all very much in the bounds of theory.

On other relegatees...di Canio for Portsmouth seems credible - he must know that he would be at best a fringe player at Lazio, and he seems to love being an iconic figure. Has anyone heard anything about Koumas? He showed genuine class last season, at Tranmere and West Brom, and I reckon some club might be ready to take a chance on him, as he has more of a pedigree than most young British players, stuck in the reserves or on loan to the lower divisions. He might not be a bad buy for Liverpool, in fact, although Houllier would then never play him...

Latest news seems to be that the boy is going to Newcastle, probably signing this evening. It remains to be seen if Sir Bobby will be patrician enough to curb the lad's dicier tendencies, but I suspect that like Woodgate, he'll be keeping a lower public profile now and "concentrating on his football" - and all this will become an
embarassing footnote to a glittering career.

IMHO He shouldn't play for England again tho...

Off-topic perhaps, but Hecate cut right through my soul with that Portsmouth remark. I have looked deep into myself, and realised that the temptation will always be there as I keep 'accidentally' looking at the Premiership page on Ceefax shortly after discovering West Ham have drawn with Millwall but lost two midfielders to severe internal bleeding in the process. Sigh.

Shall we just start a West Ham thread?

I would suggest a general football discussion thread - there probably is enough critical mass to keep it bobbing, although of course there is dick-all to talk about in the closed season half the time.
