We always supposed it had to be something to do with the floodlights around the place, the curtains kept the light out, the sound got everywhere. I'm awake at 3:43am normally but that just gave me a dope habit because I could never sleep.

I love walking home from a club and hearing the birds sing. That's just grand.

Hmmm... I guess the idea isn't so much to make the subject matter boring, as to make the "voice" of the monologue sound more like the voice you'd hear if you were mulling over something you find dull.

Oh, no. I just thought of a perfect example that I am ashamed of: Did you ever see "Three Men and a Baby"? (You--shut up in the back.) There's this part where Tom Selleck is reading the kid to sleep in soft tones, except he's reading a Sports Illustrated article about a brutal boxing match. "And now, he could baaarely see through his bloodied eye socket," and so forth. That's the effect we're after.

That's funny, mine's the opposite of Tommy's cure. What I do is, I sort of stretch my thoughts --racing thoughts is generally why I can't sleep, too-- into bizarre shapes, try to make them weirder and weirder. You know how you think weirdly when you're dreaming? So the idea is to consciously shape your thoughts into dream-thoughts, and then the next thing you know... you're dreaming! Which means you're sleeping, I actually have moments when I "realize" in my dream that I'm there.

OIC. That makes more sense. D'oh me.

walking home from a club and hearing the birds sing. That's just grand

Isn't it? Think it highlights the lovely contrast between the noisy manic place you've just been in and the calmign walk home.

Ages ago, post-club, not only heard but saw flocks of birds doing a call and response thing to each other in trees standing on opposite sides of a road. Stood there for ages, just gorgeous.

I heard of a family using classical music with a specific bpm (qutie fast) to lull their kid to sleep. The right bpm provoked a particular brain response (it had to be classical music though). I'd guess Lizst or Brahms, something really fast but not violent.

Whoa. Pers's cure is much better than mine. Do hers, do hers!

actually Janina's comments have made me wonder how much of this current bout is to do with shifts in drug habits... Am not trying to give up smoking per se but have smoked alot less this past week than in the past month or so, have been trying to cut down. Same consumption pattern goes for dope...

of course now i'm aboslutely gagging for a spliff.

and a)my gear is 30 miles away and b)i'd have to go outside/hang out the window.

ah vell.

Do you ever try and talk to the birds, imitate theirs calls?

If I've been out clubbing and it's been a really good night (and especially if I know I'm going to feel rough the next day) it's odd but I really feel like I've achieved something (not quite sure what though).

It's victory over darkness, defeat of the night, immortality, etc. etc. I'm of the age where I usually just feel tired, instead

I have to go to bed now... I will be woken in 6 hours by family to peel spuds etc. As long as you have stuff you enjoy instead of clubbing that sounds ok!

have a good day whatever y'all

but, Harmony - yeah. I used to have a blackbird and a robin who would come check me out when I imitated them. The robin just beyond arms reach. I felt very priveleged. Magpies and crows tend to call back, but don't give up their perches.

ooo an interesting radio station? will go and look. xfm on sunday night was really good - something wierd which I cannot recall the name of.

I managed to talk to the birds which lived in the hedges when I walked home from school, but the ones at uni aren't so friendly. However they will happily sing to street lights, getting confused between those and the dawn.

I've whistled at birds, occasionally, and it's been satisfying but I suspect, utterly pointless as a communication thing.

Oh, and tried yr technique, Tommy. Seemed to work pretty well (albeit combined with a glass of lovely white port) so going to give it a go tonight. Thank you thank you thank you.

I definitely like that station though it might not be to your tastes Harmony!

23:09 / 25.12.02
But almost certainly useful. Resonance have two hours of field recordings of folk music tomorrow, and that really is fantastic.

I'm up, but I'm only just online on my shagged-wire-and-tin-can-contraption of a phone line. Awful background noise, interferes with modem, lucky to get connection, dreadful noise when talking to real people.

Rang the BT diagnostic line... apparently it shouldn't even be working at all. So I'm kind of lucky, but the frustration is getting annoying.

They might fix it by Monday earliest.

Just what I need at Christmas. A dodgy net connect.

Bah! This sucks. I went out, spent 50 cents on some little game of skill(In other words a mixture of luck and divine intervention) and got one of those little remote control cars that go for around $20 and it won't go. So I'm sitting here with a sewing needle trying to fix it. What fun! I guess I shouldn't expect much for 50 cents.

Jesus, I just got away from my three smoking relatives. I feel like I'm coated in soot. Are you trying to quit Anna?

Tryphena Absent
23:06 / 26.12.02
No, I just won't go outside and in order to smoke I have to, I'm like on the verge and there's this part of me going 'if you want you can quit now, DON'T DO IT BITCH, it's filthy, filthy!'
