Good fanfic

bear asked in the godawful fanfic thread what ppl thought are examples of good fanfic.
This is a thread in which to list some good fanfic.
Give a link, the author, canon and slash pairing if appropriate (as I hope it will be).

My start:
Irresistible Poison by Rhysenn.
Harry Potter romance (PG13), Draco/Harry.
Highly recommended for being big, clever (quite a few self-deprecating in jokes) and beautiful, and containing my favourite pair.
OK not great reasons but take a look it won a prize.
Black and silver belong together.

Your turn!

(Deva, *please* link to Chrestomanci fic)

Good Housekeeping by Executrix, in which Blake and Avon try to have a shag, basically.

And, rather more ambitiously, and responding to the request for Chrestomanci slash, this sees Chrestomanci on the bridge of the Liberator, and is fab.

Slash recs are coming thick and fast (No pun intended. Ahem) in this thread, so I'm resurrecting this thread so that they can find their natural home.

Your Every Wish by Maya. Really bloody scary Harry/Draco slash. "Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutley."

Art by Mieko Belle. Poetic Hermione/Padma femmeslash. Hermione sketches Padma as she sleeps. (As Padma sleeps, not Hermione. That would just be madness.)

Fairy Boys by Mieko Belle. Sexy and funny - glam fever hits Gryffindor tower. Remus/Sirius.

Hurrah for Irresistable Poison! First piece of Harry Potter slash I ever read, that. Absolutley fantastic.

There's always that excellent LOTR fic, The Other River Bank, but I don't have the URL... Boromir/Faramir, sort of. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Oh, and the Draco Dormiens series. Not slash, but funny and interesting and all that anyway.

Resonant is one of my favourite writers. I've finally read Transfigurations, and oddly wasn't as impressed with it as I was with her shorter Harry Potter pieces (warning: don't read 'Bruise' unless you are feeling very, very strong in the head: I had to sit down and shake for about ten minutes after I first read it, and then get someone to explain to me why it couldn't possibly be true), though it's a very, very thoughtful novel, with lots of striking insights, and the prose is as good as ever. She's written Harry/Draco, Harry/Snape and Snape/Draco.

She also writes in Due South, Sentinel and Hornblower (litfic), but I'm not literate in those fandoms.

Why do you hate fanfiction, nightguard?

I admit that I haven't dived to deep into the realm of fanfic but whenever I do I am usually left with a bad taste in my mouth. I have yet to sample any of the works suggested above but it's usually lack of originality and sloppy writing that turns me off ...

In that case, nightguard, I suspect what you hate is weblishing by people who don't get their work beta-read, edited or quality-checked in any way before posting it: that happens in original fiction as much as in fanfic, from what I can see, it's just that fanfic is more widely distributed. I don't think lack of originality or sloppy writing are inherent flaws in fanfic as a form. (But then, I wouldn't. I won an award, you know )

Hmm. I guess I should recommend some more fanfic, that being the purpose of this thread, so, despite some ideological differences, I shall recommend the work of Penny Dreadful, who writes in Blake's 7, Buffy, and, um, obscure movie fandoms (Memento fanfiction??). She's an extremely good, gritty, socio-politico-sci-fi writer, though her stories are (eep!) het (most common pairing: OFC/Travis II). The ones I've read myself and can recommend particularly are The Killer of Dole Nu Lin (OFC/Travis), Not (Cally/Travis), Relations (OFC/Travis) and I Am Falling (no sex). She's probably pretty legible even to people who don't know much (or any) Blake's 7.

Fanfiction is inherently worthless. The only stuff worth your time has trainwreck appeal (See Piasa Bird, SM:AK and Blood and Metal by David Gonterman, the Chris Claremont of Ed Wood style internet insanity. They're all at the site I linked to.).

I know this isn't the thread to be hacking fanfic in but it just seems to be alot a wankery to me Deva. Maybe it's the nature of the form itself - taking other peoples characters and stories etc. Unless you think you can spin somebodies idea in a unique way (and by that, I mean more then just having this character boinking that character) I really don't see the point. Not an attack on anything you said, just another reason the meduim doesn't do much for me.

fair enough - if we want to carry on with the 'inherently worthless' debate we should probably start a new thread...

in the meantime I shall recommend Predatrix, again, because I think she's always worth reading, and her latest long story is particularly adorable & insightful (though, oddly for Pred, there isn't enough sex in it).

Yayy! Just remembered a Harry/Snape story I can actually link to because it's not languishing on one of the "please don't link to this page" paranoid archives!

The godly Torch's Pale Green. One of the biggest influences on my own H/S. Just a wonderful take on the age and power differential that manages not to position Harry as a helpless victim or Snape as a tortured soul, but doesn't just go "Harry was sixteen and had left Hogwarts therefore there was no longer any problem with the shagging of the teacher". Sexy and moving and clever.

And her first language isn't even English. God, Torch is mighty.

It turns out that *fiction* is inherently worthless. I tried to buy a USB cable with a brief exploration of the sexual and social frustration of life in a small village in East Anglia. Nothing doing.

What about commercially available novels based on telly programmes or films? Are they worthless too?

(Yeah, I know they generally suck. Pretend there were some good ones, okay? It's hypothetical.)

Fight Club slash stories by Brat Queen. Faaaantastic. Inspired me to write my own Fight Club slash, which was something I never thought I'd do in ten million years.

The Lightning Letters by Ari Munami is a Harry/Draco story that I think I'm really going to grow to love. It's archived in four chapters at the Malfoy Slash Archive. The description reads 800 years on from the fall of Voldemort, a young historian sets out to solve the mystery of the Lightning Letters. There's a subtle and sweet comment on our assumptions and it's terribly romantic. I really like Ari Munami!
