In that case, nightguard, I suspect what you hate is weblishing by people who don't get their work beta-read, edited or quality-checked in any way before posting it: that happens in original fiction as much as in fanfic, from what I can see, it's just that fanfic is more widely distributed. I don't think lack of originality or sloppy writing are inherent flaws in fanfic as a form. (But then, I wouldn't. I won an award, you know )
Hmm. I guess I should recommend some more fanfic, that being the purpose of this thread, so, despite some ideological differences, I shall recommend the work of Penny Dreadful, who writes in Blake's 7, Buffy, and, um, obscure movie fandoms (Memento fanfiction??). She's an extremely good, gritty, socio-politico-sci-fi writer, though her stories are (eep!) het (most common pairing: OFC/Travis II). The ones I've read myself and can recommend particularly are The Killer of Dole Nu Lin (OFC/Travis), Not (Cally/Travis), Relations (OFC/Travis) and I Am Falling (no sex). She's probably pretty legible even to people who don't know much (or any) Blake's 7. |
