Barbeservitor proposal

I've noticed a lot of posts in the Magick lately on emotional issues -- fear, loneliness, etc. I was going to ask for help with my own fear of flying. Would something GEKlike, to help specifically to deal with emotional conditions, be worthwhile? Not to solve them for us, but just to help.

That sounds quite interesting. I think a general purpose 'fear fighting' servitor makes sense. Not quite sure how you would boil that down into a simple intent that applied to a wide range of people, but I can see it being a popular idea.

I would totally love to get in on that action, to help launch it and help both myself and others with emotional blocks/issues. I don't know much about building a servitor, though. I'll pitch in if someone who knows more wants to start the ball rolling!

Hmmm...servitors are pretty advanced stuff, and require a great deal of forethought and maintenance. The more people involved with creating a servitor, the more important it is to have a clear consensus on what the servitor is meant to do and how it's to go about its business.

Everyone has to be on exactly the same page; for example, if one person concentrates on "emotional issues", another person on "fear of flying", a third on "conquering fear" and a fourth on "no more loneliness"...well, those are four different issues. Which one does the servitor go for?

Keeping the intent simple, as arcboi mentioned, is very important. "Emotional blockages" sounds short & simple, but in fact can be quite complicated and, depending on the various emotional blockages or problems faced by members on the board, has the potential to be very messy and disruptive.

I would probably write the intent as 'clearing the way' or words to that effect. Fear is a blockage that can be overcome. I'm sure that would also encompass a wide range of emotional blockages, but Badbh raises some valid points about things potentially getting messy where emotional issues are involved.

I would say that issues such as loneliness are different and need different approaches.

I just realised that the last post I made to another topic was a bit self-absorbed. I would rather do something constructive than just dwell on things so I would like to help with this. I am very new to this servitor thing but I am open to the idea and familiar with the concept (from this site and others). Please tell me how I can help.

Some ideas expanding on the theme might be useful. At the moment, I'm looking at the main purpose being to remove obstacles. So what does this cover? Fears and phobias and creative blocks spring to my mind. What other purposes do people think this can serve?

"Remover of obstacles" is a different matter, I think. A worthy matter, but not the one I'd intended. I meant to propose specifically a GEKlike creature whom you'd ask for help with emotional problems. It would be set up to "help with emotional problems," not anything specific. Then, when you had a specific problem, you'd address it about that problem.

My gut says that a servitor is the wrong approach. Listening to the conversation it sounds like the problem is fear which stops you doing stuff you should do, or would like to do. And you don't get rid of fear. What you need is the strength to do something despite the fear. You possibly could create something to take away your fear but that involves changing your personality, and frankly that's a far bigger deal than the fear itself. To quote star trek, source of all knowledge, "I don't want my pain taken away! I NEED my pain!".

I make my ego out-weigh the fear. Doing what you should, or want, (or wilt), is about self respect. And if you don't have self-respect you ain't gonna magick it up. You can't defer responsibility. You have no-one but yourself to blame.

Save servitors for defence and server-uptime!

'clearing the way'
"Remover of obstacles"

You could skip the servitor and just PM Ganesh if you continue with that line of thinking.

Fair point. But I was thinking of something that wasn't necessarily drawing from an existing model. Ganesh might not work for everyone if they feel they don't connect with such a figure.

But as Qalyn has pointed out, this is moving away from their original idea. If enough people are interested in a generic group servitor for removing obstacles then we'll take it a stage further, perhaps in another thread.

I think I must not have gotten my idea across effectively. Deanna Troi is pretty much what I'm talking about -- not to rid you of bad feelings but to find ways of achieve equilibrium, suggest a course of action that will help. Last week, I was preoccupied with my terror at the prospect of flying. I couldn't sleep or concentrate. I have good reasons to be frightened, as well as good reasons to be calm. I don't really need to bother fellow B'loids with it, since they can't tell me anything I don't already know (unless they know there'll be a bomb on my flight or something) but maybe I could use some GEKlike assistence in coping with the distracting, unconstructive, out-of-control feelings of terror. I mean, I got on the goddam plane even though I was scared, but the whole week beforehand was pretty much a wash.

Anyway. The consensus does not seem to favor this idea -- maybe I'll take it up with myself someday.

OK, I partially take-back my comment- a sevitor to assist navigation thorugh the situation is a fine idea. Although don't knock conventional wisdom.
