Quantum computing making 'tremendous progress'

19:00 27 November 02

Exclusive from New Scientist Print Edition

The first element of a device that many believe holds the best hope for quantum information processing has been completed by Australian researchers, while an Austrian team has reported the first truly quantum calculation. The achievements go some way to dispelling the widely-held idea that doing anything useful with quantum computing is decades or even centuries away.

Blimey. They must have used a very sharp pencil to draw that one up. I bet it plays a mean game of space invaders.

Seriously though, looking forward to seeing it work, maybe sooner than 2007 -- now they've got it in the papers, I'm guessing more funding and competition will follow.

I know I'm getting a bit ahead but, I wonder what quantum software would be like?

Dunno. But you'd need some very clever jiggery-pokery in the registry to deal with .WAV files. Be easier on a Mac, I guess.

On the plus side for Bill, he could just install a live cat in all his X-Boxes. Once you lifted the lid ...
