The various debating styles on the board : what's yours like ?

So, I was wondering : how well do you feel you debate things on Barbelith?
I’m talking here about the methods you use, and whether you feel you make your point clearly and successfully. So I have a lot of questions…

Do you tend to make a general point, and then back it up with specific examples ? Do you use authorities to back it up, and if so, do you explain them or do you assume a certain amount of familiarity ? Do you use personal examples ? Do you feel your comments are passionate, or dispassionate ?
And when you’ve made your point, if someone posts a reply disputing it, will you be likely to reply ? Or – if there are various people taking various stances, as there frequently are – would you be more likely to just sit back and see what happens ? Do you feel that not replying is a form of reply in itself (silence speaking volumes, as it were) ?
Do you feel that the length of a post adds to its weight in debate, or would you prefer to make a quick remark and leave it at that ?
And, perhaps most importantly, do you feel that your debating style is successful ? Do you believe you make your point well ? Or do you often feel that it’s got lost in the general back-and-forth ? How do you think you could improve it ?

Granted, the above questions probably don’t fully or accurately cover the range of things that get discussed on the board, but I thought it might be interesting to see people’s self-assessment on this, as I think there are a lot of different ways that people post.

Speaking for myself, I tend to make a point, back it up with a couple of examples, and then think that’s it, only to find sometimes lengthy refutations giving a large number of counter-examples, and after a couple of replies, I must admit I tend to lose interest, often regardless of the calibre or rigour of the responses. Which is probably symptomatic of my viewing discussion not as a way of learning, but more as a confrontational thing, with one person expected to defer under the weight of the other person’s argument or the evidence. Which, come to think of it, I might effectively be doing, by just bailing out. Hmmm. Maybe I should stick around and slug it out more.

Anyway, I’d be interested to hear whether other folks feel they have a particular debating style, and how well it works, and how they should/could improve it, if at all.

my style is the drunken master. i typo like all bastardy.

in the main, if something gets my goat, i get into it. i have to admit being a little lazy and 'unbothered' about researching deeply into things. i really dont have enough time to read all the old threads, say, trawling for a specific example of something someone said, if i remember it, i will say so.

i also like to be able to be coarse and familiar, and swear as much as i do in real life. it doesnt mean i hate you, or have a limited articulacy, mostly it just means i find it funny. saying things in that great heady mix of clever and common, i feel, is the best way to make a point.

are you asking in an attempt to round out your own style, or to find our weaknesses, so you may crush all opposition to your memetic advancement?

Dammit, was I that transparent ? Curses, foiled again…

Nah, it’s out of genuine interest, and when I started analysing mine, I suddenly spotted a few dozen inconsistencies, so thought I’d share the self-doubt. Er, I mean the results.

I think I'm absolutely pants, I could probably do a lot better, but all my time in real life is spent arguing and writing boring essays where points get batted back and forth by the small tennis racket that is my brain. Barbelith is like my break where the arguments at least make some kind of sense and are often funnier than my lecturers and the shit people who talk toss in my lectures. They actually tried to tell me Schindler's List was a good film the other day... oh and I whine a lot.

With me, as for the last few weeks I've been contributing totally from work "rushed" is the operative word. I find with the subjects I'm interested in (ie . the Magick), I can chat okay about it quite easily (- or at least that's my impression, please don't shatter my delusions ). THough my posts there would probably benefit from a little more thought at times. I tend to chuck in load of examples as well. I don't tend to get stuck into some of the more serious debates (Head Shop) due to time, and the lack of that sense of ease when debating in that way. I have to think too much, it doesn't flow!

A general rule for me though is to try and avoid offending people with my posts and be polite(ish). This is is because I've seen a couple of other e-spaces I really liked get trashed with flaming rows.

But Janina, it's by Spielberg. And even has pathos. What more could you want?

My discussing tends to fall into two catagories. Normally, I'll just add a small - sometimes sarcastic (see above) - comment to threads which interest or amuse me, but occassionally, if the subject at hand is something I'm interested in or passionate about, I'll knock out a larger post.

My real weakness comes in posting new topics. By the time I've finished writing the initial post I've either realised what I'm writing is utter nonsense and deleted it, or, by thinking about the subject when composing my initial stance, I've answered my own question.

Janina, I've been meaning for weeks to just start a topic about how much and in what detail I agree with you about Schindler's List, especially the scene that you mentioned in your earlier thread about your Holocaust class (the one where he blubs).

I just keep running out of string.

My 'style'? - wading in, shouting a bit, pissing off even the people who would probably agree with me, then getting annoyed that I haven't articulated my point properly. But it's better than it used to be.

Generally, I tend to make a long and confusing post near the start of a thread, in which I go over my position and my theories and other possible theories in a "hmmmm" way, all mixed up together.

Then, annoyed when nobody answers it because it doesn't make any sense, I start making chippy little posts attacking minor logical or factual flaws in random people's arguments. If someone bites, I continue on at them and things degenerate into pointless slanging. If nobody bites, I either stop reading the thread, or occasionally interject with one-liners.

I also use the word "clearly" a lot, because if you say something is clearly true, it's much more impressive than saying it's true, clearly you'd have to be stupid to deny something that was clearly true.

Bullet points would probably help, and a good editor.

My default debating style on the 'Lith is to sit back and watch others go at it, because my side of a given issue usually gets argued eventually and most of youse guys do it much better than I do.

I dunno. I used to be quite argumentative back in the day but, now that I think about it, I tend to put less emphasis on my side of an issue now than I used to. I guess I just prefer to hear all of the sides and make up my mind accordingly, unless I have something incredibly profound to add (which isn't often).

what or who is glassonion?
i have told you, i am of the drunken master style, popularised by the educated and morally superior shaolin, used originally to resist the tyrannical japanese, as they persecuted town derelicts in the occupied territories.

i know not this style of the transparent onion of which you speak...but i welcome your challenge.

I try to be non-confrontational and to write reasoned posts, but I think that often leaves me with no punch and everything I write is very dry and, well, dull (this is partly because I have a tendency to pick nits about history rather than addressing the topic at hand, I think). Also I have a horrid feeling that what I think is obviously self-deprecating and wry comes across as pompous. Ugh.

Standard method: start reply, delete; start reply, delete; repeat until frustrated, then post vaguely snarky rejoinder in a totally different thread and regret immediately. Leave to chill, and serve with garnish of 'why do I bother? No one cares...'

Confusational, stupid ranting and blind opinion making with little substance and largely in the wrong. This will be swiftly be followed by responses that bluntly remind me that as a Straight White Male, I am in actual fact The Devil and thus anything I say should be interpreted to be bigoted, facist and evil.

I occasionally make jokes that nobody notices.

I don't discuss stuff enough. When I bother to make a post, it's usually relatively rambly but informed enough, I'd hope. I do tend to err on the "long" side of long, and go overboard on CAPITALS, italics, and - hyphens. I also recognise entirely the method K-CC describes for writing posts - I often kill many halfway through, or draft and redraft offline. If I could focus a bit more, I be way mor discursive, rather than offering mere opinions so often.

Of course, there are also the facile one-line posts I make, which do exactly what they say on the tin.

so all of you are too scared to say what your strongr points are, incase some person, who shall remain ambiguous, tears you to shreds?

i am fucking brilliant at being irritating. in fact, in amongst all this discussion of trolling, i have become intrigued by that concept. it is one i was not aware of, and i think its subtle fine arts could be beautiful, if properly honed.

here comes an alias, or perhaps a change of scene, with which to elucidate my point so gently and quietly that folks barely notice.....

from the abstract:

...just hope it doesn't all turn into people having a go at each other. Though that might be revealing in itself, I guess.

I've noticed quite a bit of "people having a go at each other" on this board in the month since I've joined, often in the guise of debate, and it's a bit disconcerting.

In terms of my non-Conversation posts, I do make a point of checking the board archives or doing a bit of research on a topic before posting, and I take the extra 15-20 seconds to check my spelling & grammar before I hit the "Post Reply" button. Especially considering that not everyone on Barbelith speaks English as a primary language, I feel that if I want people to read my posts, the onus is on me to make sure they're readable and understandable.

I think it's important, both here and in other fora, to keep my posts concise, with the intent of putting my point across as clearly as possible.

My style's somewhat rambling and incoherent, though I always try to make it inoffensive. Even when I'm calling everyone a bunch of cunts, I like to think they know I mean it in a nice way.

I'm usually pissed. I'm not sure if there's a correlation...
