Danzig is God has just borrowed unto me a stack of Devin Townsend CDs, including an album by Strapping Young Lad, one of his many ongoing projects. I'm midway through my second listen to Terria, and I feel like I've returned to my childhood, where Rawk! was all about being the most preposterous, the most epic, the most exhilerating, the most ego-crazed spectacle imaginable.

I've been kinda caught flat footed. Is it OK to like this? Not by your standards, but by mine? Is it OK to fall in love with this?

Please tell me you love him too.

I wouldn't know. I'm too young to have even heard of him. I guess it's one of those Old People's Things.

I dug the first Strapping album. Very tongue in cheek type of shit. Rock spectacle is a good way of putting it, especially live.
I know a guy who played on the first album and said this Townsend dude was off the map. Apparantly, sometimes as he'd be crossing the street, he'd stop in the middle of the cross walk, pull down his pants, crouch down expose his ass then continue on his merry way as if nothing had happened. Ok.

Saw him live just before last Christmas - he seemed to be on a 80's guitar thing. Didn't mind it at first it got really, really annoying about half way through. And I went 'cos Godflesh were supporting anyway. Who were quite marvelous.

Devin Townsend is God! Repeat after me "Devin Townsend is God!". Thankyou, thats good chanting you've got going there. The man is a musical genius! I saw him in a small Metal club in Cheltenham UK in 1998/1999 and it rocked my socks off. He played Strapping Young Lad and Ocean Machine when I saw him. Ocean Machine is a superb album! He followed that up with Infinity during the recording of he had to check himself into a mental hospital because he'd been living in the music studio for weeks and gone a bit crazy. Infinity is one diverse crazy album! This was followed by Phycisist that was a return to his Strapping Young Lad roots and then shortly after that the superb Terria came along. All good stuff and I great diversity to his music. I have a friend who's not really into metal in a big way but he loves Ocean Machine and Terria but is less keen on the rest.

Didn't he once do vocals on Steve Vai's 'Sex and Religion'?

and did I just totally blow any cred I once posessed?

Yes, yes he did. I believe he was also in Whitesnake for a while. I firmly believe that there's nothing wrong with any of that.

If he had a Van Halen connection he'd be God.

Devin Townsends new album Accelerated Evolution is out now. Strapping Young Lads new Album came out a few weeks ago. Both very good but I prefer the more melodic rock of The Devin Townsend Band to the speed metal of Strapping Young Lad. They were on tour again recently and I caught them in Bristol and converted loads of my friends to the wonders of Devin. Brilliant gig!

Wish I could've been there. I'm currently petitioning Danzig is God for the whole of his back catalogue on CD-R.
