Oh bugger.

There's a chance I might be able to go to this. How accessible are his talk for non-theory bitches?

The ones I've heard tend to be extremely accessible - he's not really a theory person in the sense I understand that term. Occasionally I wish I understood economics when I read or listen to Uncle Noam, but generally as long as you have a basic sense of right and wrong then what he says makes sense...

Well, the big downside to Chomsky's lectures/writings is that he's dry as the fucking Sahara, speaks in something of a monotone, and lacks charisma entirely. So, brilliant of not, he's not exactly the most entertaining person to sit and listen to for a few hours.

Well, er, we probably need a whole separate thread to debate this in, but I actually think he's quite witty in many of his lectures that I've heard: it's a dry, bitter, low-key wit but it illicits a dark chuckle every now and again all the same. As for charisma, I think that might come as a result of respecting the man's work, assuming one does. But anyway: I'd heartily recommend this and will try to be there. Although it's not cheap, is it...

Oh yeah, definitely, I'm just playing devil's advocate here. I'm not sure how many people would go to see Chomsky expecting any level of entertainment value, but if there were any, they should be warned.

I'm not nearly as harsh as the AV Club...

I read him saying that he doesn't want to be a charismatic speaker. He's a purist who wants to convince by the strength of his argument alone. Actually, I think the dryness becomes amusing after a while, as do his turns of phrase.

Arse, I've now found out that I have a prior engagement for that night and can't make it.

So is anyone else going to this? Why am I thinking of using all my birthday good will to go to listen to a boring sounding man in a Cathedral?

But I like Chomsky. I'm going thru all my English Language handouts putting boxes around his name under the pretense of work.

Well jUne obviously won't be there, but I'm planning to if tickets are still available.
Given the subject matter, I'm sure Chomsky's views on the UN's 'humanitarian' Iraq program will crop up and I'd like to see his opinion.

i wish i could but heck, well you know the story...
i saw Pierre Carles for a comment + view of his last cinematographic essay, called "enfin pris", where Carles speaks a lot of Chomsky (between others) ; if anybody is ok with french, i highly recommend Carles's movies.
