Over in the Pitchfork Top 100 of the 80s thread, some of us were kicking around the idea of doing a similar project, but were not sure how to go about it without resorting to a silly list with a forced heirarchy.
So, I proposed this:
How about we use this premise - each Barbelith member is to write about the cd that they'd hypothetically give the rest of Barbelith for Christmas. It could be a regular album that's been released, or a mix cd/mix tape thing. They have to write something about why they're giving that record to Barbelith, and if it's a mix, they have to talk about why they chose each song. When we have a good number of responses, maybe we can make a minisite that can be part of the webzine.
It occurs to me that it may be a good idea to set a minimum/maximum word count to keep things manageable; and also that perhaps it would be far more interesting to focus entirely on mixes since it would cover more ground, it wouldn't force people to pigeonhole themselves, and the selection of individual songs would allow the writers a bit more leeway. After all, somebody might have one brilliant, perfect song, but the rest of the record might just be all wrong. I think that mixes are a lot more intimate anyway. I guess we should have a minimum and maximum number of songs for the mixes too, right?
What does it mean that you're selecting a particular piece of music for the rest of Barbelith? Well, you should tell us. It could be something that reveals your affection for the place; it could be a bitter kiss-off; it could be something that reflects what you believe Barbelith is, or what you want it to be. You could take this as a personal list of "The Most Barbelith Songs Ever", or you could simply be pimping something you think the rest of us should hear. Have fun with it. Be yourself.
You don't have to be a record nut to do this. Virtually every last one of us knows enough songs and is capable enough with expressing themselves to get in on this.
And just because I have Christmas as part of the hypothetical question doesn't mean it has to have ANYTHING to do with the holiday or Christianity. Though, if you want it to, go right ahead. |
