Barbelith X-Mas Albums Project

Over in the Pitchfork Top 100 of the 80s thread, some of us were kicking around the idea of doing a similar project, but were not sure how to go about it without resorting to a silly list with a forced heirarchy.

So, I proposed this:

How about we use this premise - each Barbelith member is to write about the cd that they'd hypothetically give the rest of Barbelith for Christmas. It could be a regular album that's been released, or a mix cd/mix tape thing. They have to write something about why they're giving that record to Barbelith, and if it's a mix, they have to talk about why they chose each song. When we have a good number of responses, maybe we can make a minisite that can be part of the webzine.

It occurs to me that it may be a good idea to set a minimum/maximum word count to keep things manageable; and also that perhaps it would be far more interesting to focus entirely on mixes since it would cover more ground, it wouldn't force people to pigeonhole themselves, and the selection of individual songs would allow the writers a bit more leeway. After all, somebody might have one brilliant, perfect song, but the rest of the record might just be all wrong. I think that mixes are a lot more intimate anyway. I guess we should have a minimum and maximum number of songs for the mixes too, right?

What does it mean that you're selecting a particular piece of music for the rest of Barbelith? Well, you should tell us. It could be something that reveals your affection for the place; it could be a bitter kiss-off; it could be something that reflects what you believe Barbelith is, or what you want it to be. You could take this as a personal list of "The Most Barbelith Songs Ever", or you could simply be pimping something you think the rest of us should hear. Have fun with it. Be yourself.

You don't have to be a record nut to do this. Virtually every last one of us knows enough songs and is capable enough with expressing themselves to get in on this.

And just because I have Christmas as part of the hypothetical question doesn't mean it has to have ANYTHING to do with the holiday or Christianity. Though, if you want it to, go right ahead.

Oh, by the way, please comment and fine-tune this idea. Input folks, input.

I'm more for full albums, personally. Albums, you have to argue a case for listening even to the tracks that don't work - mixes are... I dunno. Too easy. And yeah, I think there's probably a tendency with some mixes to be "Hey! Look at all the Grrreat stuff I listen to! I've got all the Coldwater Suplex releases there are, including white labels!" You know? I think an album gives it more rigour.

Pick an album that's you and fight to the death to get someone to listen to it. Wayne Coyne to Wayne Newton. You know what you doing.

All the same, I'd like to a wider range of Barbefolks get involved in this project, and I think that by making it a big essay about one single album it makes it more like a homework assignment and will scare off a lot of people.

Also, I think the "mix" idea makes it more personal and more fun for some people who might otherwise be intimidated by the task of writing a big fuck-off essay.

How about if the mix has to have some purpose or coherence, so you can argue about it as an entity, like the way you can about an album? The point of the exercise is surely the "give Barbelith for Christmas" bit, after all. That way people don't have to exhaustively list all the tracks in their mix but instead can talk about what the point of it is...

But Flux: when we say "album", we don't necessarily mean new one, do we? There's lots of mileage in giving people old albums you think they should own but they don't, etc; this isn't a "best album of past year" project, after all. It might be that, but also, there's an opportunity for "what album would you make people listen to again - whether they'd heard it or not?"

Something like that, anyhow, but I'm interested. (And looking back: what Rothkoid said).

Flux: everything that I don't like about the idea can probably be summed up in this thought - do you want people writing about ONE THING, passionately, or do you want The Most Barbelith Mixtape In The World...Ever!!! ?

I know which I'd prefer. But maybe I'm out of touch with the youngsters.

Alright. Let's do single albums then. From any time, past or present. I'm not sure how anyone got the idea that I was stressing recent releases, but hey.

You weren't stressing it, but it's the most obvious interpretation - it's how mainstream press do "Christmas Albums".
