What sense do you use the least?

Things you think about when cleaning the loo #17;

I remember reading something about how we often tend to rely on one sense over the others, I guess I, like most people go for sight, or possibly hearing.

But what sense do you bother about least? I guess it's smelling with me, partly as I don't think I've actually got much of a sense left, I'm sure nearly two decades of hayfever as well as the usual winter colds have destroyed most of my ability to smell, normally people around me are aware of good or bad odours long before I'm aware of them.

So I'm wondering who out there would be the opposite of this, and how they 'view' the world...

I rarely use common sense, does that count?

Actually, this is not totally what you're asking for, but I've realised how much my vision and hearing is connected. Because I'm so short sighted, if I take my glasses off I have incredible difficulty hearing what people are saying. There's nothing wrong with my hearing, I've had it tested, but I must lip read and check people's facial expressions all the time.

And I did meet a ghost hunter who smelt ghosts more than being aware of them using any other sense.

Smell. My sense of smell really isn't great.

Also, like SFD, if I haven't got my glasses on , I really can't hear what people are saying. It's weird.

Touch. If I felt everything I listened to, looked at or smelled, I'd be getting into all kinds of trouble.

Hahaha. Nice.

I can't say that I bother about any sense the least. I'm greedy that way. I want them all, and indulge them all.

First of all--you need four senses to enjoy food properly. You need sight, scent, touch, and taste (this last one can be misleading, since touch is actually a part of what is refered to as the taste of foods, such as in texture and temperature; taste when we refer to it as a sense, I think, is what I would more specifically call a sense of flavor). And, boy, I want to enjoy my food properly. I can get vicious when someone tries to get between me and my food.

But I'm not letting go of hearing, either. No siree. I need that to fully enjoy Rice Krispies.

Taste. Eating isn't something I much enjoy most of the time and enjoying a meal is about the only thing taste is good for. Although it might be interesting to go around licking people and things; just to see how long it takes before I earn a free ride to the loony bin.

Interesting thread - I think it would be smell for me, as it's not something that I'm usually concious of. Pete Redgrove in his book "The Black Goddess and the 6th Sense" talks a lot about this, and how our sense of smell acts as a conduit for unconcious impressions. If you think about the role scent plays in sex, and what a hotline to memory it is, the powerful reactions we can have to unpleasant smells etc. seems quite a convincing argument.

Another great book on the senses: Diane Ackerman's "A Natural History of the Senses".

I quite like all my senses..

I would say Smell, but everybody claims I've got a good sense of smell because I can identify the scents of all kinds of stupid things like rice and plastic and sneezes..

..'twould have to be Taste I suppose as, although I enjoy my grub, I rarely attempt to investigate/manipulate objects by licking them..

Prrrobably smell, because I always seem to be congested (which really sucks when you're trying to sing and, you know, not sound like a trumpet). Which might also 'splain (as ye Apple-Picker pointed out) why I'm not really into the food so much. I'm very much of the "give me a pill that provides me w/all of my daily nutritional needs" camp. So taste might well be my most maligned sense.

Smell, definitely. I have really narrow nasal passages...

who's to say we only have 5 senses? there is current work going on elsewhere in the world on exploring the existance and such of many more than 5...i hear russia's the main happening place for most of this.

unfortunately, all my senses work cooperatively. i'm unable to tune anything out...leads to sensory overload quite often...and that stinks.

As any good pedant will tell you, we've actually all got six senses, as most people forget to include proprioception AKA "Knowing where all your limbs are at any given time".

I am very sensual, utilising all my senses, especially those "extra" senses when I can.

I devour the world with my eyes.
I listen to the point of pain.
I find myself regularly sniffing the air...or even people if I can do it discreetly.
I savour anything I put in my mouth.

The sense I use the least, I suppose is "common sense", but I am learning to balance that out with my intuitive sense, which apparently, rocks.

Taste, definitely. I have a great sense of smell, very sensitive hearing. My eyesight isn't great, but I wear glasses all the time, and, like sfd and Warewullf, I also find I can't hear people properly if I can't see them. It is weird, because obviously I don't have any problem speaking on the phone (apart from being afraid of it, of course), so why should face-to-face be any different? I guess it's more that hearing *anything* properly becomes problematic if I can't see properly. I feel more exposed, stuff gets confused...I expect it is something to do with feeling anxious and not paying proper attention.

Gees, I completely overlooked Touch.

I suppose I either use touch waaaaaay too much or not at all.

Strangely though, I think I pay attention to it the least.
