I'm gonna be 31 tomorrow and quite frankly I'm shitting myself. No longer will I be 30, I'll be "in my 30s". And that's the kind of age adults have.

Really scared now.

(Btw- there will be a party next week- check the Gathering if you're interested.)

Happy Birthday mate - I figured that being in your 30s kind of has some benefits ie. there's no real differentation between your years anymore. It's all just a blur. You might not like it now but wait till you're 38.

Staying out of the sun and eating little or no meat gets you 10 free years. You can pass but you get the benefit of ironic distance. If you're cursed with a perfect pop music and cultural memory, revivals of dodgy trends might drive you crazy until you get used to it and get used to sniffing out the truly weird instead of having it fall into your lap. Anyway, with the Vinge Singularity and the return of the Mayan gods not too far off, you'll still be young enough to profit from or at least be entertained by them.

Happy birthday? Hah, some chance! It all gets rubbish from now on, I'm afraid, and each year is worse than the last. I hope you've got some photos of yourself having fun somewhere, cos you won't be having any more, not now.

Awww. Happy Birthday! If it makes you feel better, I thought you were 25 or so when I met you. Hope you liked your present...

I wouldn't worry about it. It's nothing shocking these days. Loads of people are doing it - maybe more than you think. Some of my most sexy friends are 'in their 30's' actually. I'll probably be doing it myself in a couple of years. And happy birthday!!!

Old age, pah! The best is yet to be, Chairman. All that time I used to waste worrying about time wasted! Of course, when urinary incontinence kicks in and I start to shrink, then I may reappraise. 31 is a glorious year to inhabit, enjoy!

That picture of me up in the attic is a horrifying sight, believe me.

Happy Birthday, sir!

I'm 31 also this year, but have been finding a lot of benefits, particularly since I don't feel any older than I did when I was 23 (except for that urinating 15 times a night thing, of course): For example, I remember going out in my 20s and all the women my age were with men in their 30s. Now I get to be that guy. In theory at least. Also, now when I make smart-ass comments people make a show of laughing rather than getting bent out of shape about 'wise-ass kids today'. Police never eye me up as a potential troublemaker... the list goes on.

33 in two months. Don't sweat it, chairman. It's great. Worst thing is suddenly realising you're paying for your 20s now with huge credit card bills, at least for me.

I second that. I've been in my thirties for almost three years now, and they've been the most enjoyable years of my life so far.

Don't be scared – it gets better & better. Really.

Happy Birthday!

Yeah, I bet it does get better. Thinking about being 40 is scary, but thinking of being 80 with a huge beard and a nice warm fireplace and lots of books is not as scary and sort of appealing...

This does raise a very important philosophical question actually. Can a person with Bagpuss hair truly be old?

Thanks everyone. (Barry- Helmschmied's giving me the present when he gets back from Graz. Thank you in advance.)

Being REALLY old sounds more fun. Maybe next year I'll just skip straight to retirement.

I've missed the great day and I'll miss the party, too, but many happy returns, Stoatie. I'm well into my thirties and I love it, so don't worry, you'll just get more sure of yourself as time goes on.

Congratulations, Stoatie. Realising that you are grown up is a bit scary, but all you have to do is remember the clueless teenager incarnation of yourself and it doesn't seem so bad. You were a clueless teenager, right?
