Just heard that this is comming out from a mate who gets dodgy DVD's and I thought no way can they do a sequal to this. But comments on the
IMDB suggest that the director has manged it.
Anyone caught this in the States yet and can comment? I mean this has some big shoes to step into but I it can manage it I am sooooo there .

I've heard it plays with the concept of the original by introducing a few pseudo-temporal theories into the mix. General consensus is that it's good but flawed.

Wasn't the first one a little flawed too, its been awhile since I saw it? Trailer looks like its basically the same ID though they haven't messed with the formula much, looks like its been filmed on DV was the first one?

hmm.. it is made by the same people as the first one, right?

You'd think the makers of such an imaginative, accomplished film would be able to come up with something slightly more original to follow it up with than a sequel..

Ah but this one is a 4D cube so I'd imagine some good upside down fun going on, Lionel Richie style.

Acting looks a bit hammy on the trailer though, but I have faith it'll be good.

This sounds cool, but I've never even heard of Cube let alone Cube 2 sooo...

What's it about? Who made it? When did it come out?

Never mind. I found info on the first Cube at the above link.

I don't think it's made by the same people at all, Riz. And it looks... like the first one.

Hmm.

Wow. This is deeply disturbing. The original Cube caught my eye in the video store a while back, though the philistine friends I was with refused to rent it. I finally had to rent it on my own, and loved it. My friends still have yet to see it - Cube is like my own personal little movie. A crappy sequel? Bah. Almost as bad as a certain series of prequels.

first cube was great. don't want to diss the sequl without seeing it but I thought the director and his team would probably tackle something else really.

The Return Of Rothkoid

Check IMDB. I think it's a different director and team.

I saw Cube 2 a little while ago and really enjoyed it. It's basically a repeat of the first film with new actors and better special effects. The performances are fine, the characters feel a little bit cliched but they did in the first one too and it wasn't really a problem and the script is solid. There's way more technobabble in this one though as an attempt to explain the cube is made and whilst utterly frustrating in itself the ending, I thought at least, was a lot more solid than first one.
If you enjoyed the original I'm sure you'll enjoy the sequel but don't expect anything breathtakingly different...

I attended a lecture with Vincenzo Natali, the director of the first Cube film, a few months back and he mentioned that he has nothing to with Cube 2. I got the impression he didn't think much of the idea of remaking it, although he was trying to be polite about the whole thing.

He did show clips from his two upcoming films, which look pretty interesting: "Cypher" has a Fight Club meets Clockwork Orange visual feel, about an average guy who falls into the twisted world of corporate espionage; and "Void" (either that or "Nothing") about two guys trapped in a house by the FBI who wish that the rest of the world would just go away - and are then stuck trying to cope when it does.

I would nominate Cube as having the lousiest ending of any movie I've ever seen. Tacking on an unconvincing happy ending to a movie is pretty lame, but tacking on an unconvincing unhappy ending to a movie, just because you can, and it's somehow cool and un-Hollywood, is much, much lamer.

Happy? Eh? The Innocent survives but everyone else dies, or perhaps he doesn't and it's purgatory. It's not in any way a happy ending, cryptic, illuminating, surreal possibly, hollywood? No, happy no. I liked it as it tried to explain nothing and left me with a lot more questions than answers, rare that a movie does that to me.

No, read my post again. I said it was a tacked-on unhappy ending, which, in my opinion, is even lamer than a tacked on happy ending.

I suppose if I had to be honest with myself, I'd have to admit that I was pretty pissed off by the end of Cube. But as I was watching it, I forced myself to give it the benefit of the doubt, because I liked the rest of the movie so much.

The main problem I have with this sequel is the way that you get spoon fed all of the major plot points one by one in language a five year old could understand. They don't even give you a chance to work it out for yourself, and if you've seen the original then it really doesn't take much to guess where the film is heading.

For me Cube 2 was about as satisfying as a Murder She Wrote episode with slightly worse acting.

Solitaire Rose as Tom Servo

I saw the first one, finally, and I have to agree that the ending seemed like a Film School Student ending, almost mixed with a slasher film.

It was extremely unsatisfying and while it didn't spoil the good parts of the movie leading up to it, it sure put a horrid taste in my mouth as I finished watching it. Which is too bad, since the script asked a LOT of questions, and answering one or two of them would have helped.
