Hey folks,

I suffer from debilitating migraines on occasion, like today, and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions (homeopathic or otherwise) on how to dull the pain and associated affects of these damn things. Please share if you get migraines and have any suggests on how to prevent them, beat back the pain or whatever else you think might help.

Thanks-

-Jesse

I do not get migraines (thankfully) but as I have a friend who ddoes, I recall reading that caffeine in moderate amounts - cuppa coffee or tea - can help. Hope this helps.

I find ibuprofene helps - of course by the time i can feel a migraine coming on - its too late, but at least i don't throw up or anything and the weird light show dies down pretty quickly to be replaced with pain and incredible fatige, which is , you know, preferable

Dehydration can ruin you too. Are you drinking enough? Don't overdo it though -- if your pee is straw-coloured, you're OK.

I used to have migranes and my doctor told me that cutting out refined sugar might help. I stopped eating it and gradually brought my consumption of all confectionary - anything sweet really - to a minimum. I get migranes very rarely now so there's definitely something in it.

Apparantly the plant Feverfew is know to be a help as well. I grew it, ate it a couple of times, decided it tasted awful, and never got around to getting it in tablet form.

I have chronic migraines, and the best advice I can give is a bit of caffeine (it's a vasoconstrictor) and any over-the-counter analgesic. My doctor's suggestion was Motrin. I know a lady who finds benzodiazepenes helpful...but I think she find them a little *too* helpful for all of her everydays. Since migraines generally relate to stress, you might also consider if there's something that seems to set them off.

Here's the website of the place I used to work for. Chocolate and raw onion are triggers for me. Lately I've been doing two Aleve washed down with Red Bull, which probably will make my head explode someday.

Putting your right hand in a bowl of very warm water supposedly helps some people. You see a common cause of migraines is brain chill, it just get's cold up there sometimes. What with circulation doing what circulation does putting your hand in that very warm water apparently helps warm your brain back up. I'm trying to remember where I read this one, I think it might have been in a Radio Times article by TV's Dr Mark Porter or something like that.

I do have to confess I've never tried it. It always escapes my mind when a migraine hits me.

What I've heard is feverfew, taken as a regular supplement with a booster dose when you feel the first signs of one coming on.

And I've heard magnesium supplementation can have a preventative effect.

This product here has both, along with descriptions of some studies.

There are more studies here and here.
