Does anyone know anything about this group? They are a folk outfit from the seventies and musically its very rough and ready but just gorgeous little tunes. On a first listen they are like
a cross between Terry Callier, Belle and Sebastion and Beth Orton. I heard them being played in a second hand record shop today but the dealer wouldn't sell the record to me as it was his own personal copy. I've tried looking on Google but have so far found nothing.

I'm hoping the barbelith super intelligence wont let me down.

any help would be appreciated.

cheers.

From the lack of replies I take it either nobody knew or nobody cared!

but for those who were interested I found out the group in question are called MELLOW CANDLE
and only ever released one album which was critically derided at the time but went on to become a rare folk rock classic.

just for the record.

The All Music Guide informs me that Mellow Candle's one and only disc, "Swaddling Songs," was rereleased in 1996.

Guitarist David Williams ended up a studio pro, playing with everyone from Elvis to Michael Jackson to Mariah Carey to the Carpenters and George Benson and.... just a fucking amazing CV.

Just a quick bump: by odd synchronicity, it appears that none other than Stephen Malkmus has been covering Mellow Candle's "The Poet and the Witch" in concert...

And for the next few days, our own Flux has got a link to an MP3 of the original. Just soze you can hear what the fuss is about, like.

Well, hey. How's about that - I didn't even know this thread existed, I would have commented on this ages ago.

The album "The Poet And The Witch" is from, Swiddling Songs, is very worthwhile - I very rarely ever listen to it, but it is quality stuff. "The Poet And The Witch" is indeed my favorite, and not only for the Malkmus connection - he just happens to have very good taste, I suppose.

If you dig Mellow Candle, I would strongly recommend checking out the Fairport Convention song also currently on offer, and the new Malkmus album Pig Lib when it is released in March. Malkmus has been on a very big 70s electric-folk-revival kick lately, and you can really hear it on his newest songs.
