Free things are always the best, OK well I definitely wasn't blatant consumer girl (though two pots of Ben and Jerry's for £5 was more then I could resist. Oh Tesco's in studentsville how I lovvvveeee yyoooouuu).

It's almost that time again.
Saturday November 25th 2006 is Buy Nothing Day (UK).
Unfortunately it coincides with Stoatie's birthday, still it's a worthy cause. Make a stand! Say NO to consumerism and buy more the day before.

"Unfortunately it coincides with Stoatie's birthday, still it's a worthy cause."

It's only against blind consumerism, not against the necessary acquisition of essential goods for facilitating festive social interaction. Buying beer and cake will be allowed.

I hate this thing. My birthday is November 26th, and a truly remarkable number of people routinely use Buy Nothing Day as a reason not to get me anything. It's not even as if there's a sound logic behind that, they just do it.

So, on a personal level, Buy Nothing Day is evil. On a more practical one, I'm always a bit confused about what it accomplishes. It won't, for example, trigger a rush of selling less crap by commercial enterprises. I much prefer Buy No Petrol campaigns and so on - they seem to have a pattern I can understand.

It's actually two days after my birthday, so cake and stuff is still allowed...

I like Buy Nothing Day in principle, but have never yet managed to actually do it. Either I have to buy electricity or gas credits, or bus tickets, or something essential (or, y'know, beer and cigarettes)... which, yeah, I could have planned ahead and bought the day before... but surely if everyone did that, it'd make the day before Buy Nothing Day a total victory for capitalism, cos the people celebrating BND would be stocking up...

I like the idea. I don't really get how or if it works, though.
