Shrooms

Having moved to a more rural environment lately, I'm now close to a small wood which contains a marvellous selection of mushrooms. In fact, after our last shroom-hunting expedition I discovered a number of species growing in our garden!

Anyway, myself and my partner spent a lovely afternoon in late October in the green and mossy woods collecting shrooms. We're planning on taking them at the next full moon with a friend. I also collected enough for the person I'm training and I facilitated a mushroom ceremony for her at Samhain. Needless to say it was quite a powerful experience, even though the shrooms weren't hugely potent.

So, now that the shroom season is drawing to a close, have any of you been picking, and/or taking the magical fungi? Want to talk about your experiences?

There's a Conversation thread you might find interesting, although discussion in the Magick will no doubt take some different tacks.
I've experienced mushrooms twice, both times at Burning Man. Very social experiences - bonding & role-defining games were prevalent.

Thanks for the pointer Grant, that's a very interesting thread. I'm also interested in hearing about people's experiences with more emphasis on the magical/spiritual effects. Alas, perhaps some of the weird people here haven't been experiencing our magical fungal friends recently.

As I've stated before, I came to ritual use of entheogens quite late in my shamanic practise - just 3 years ago in fact. I worked shamanically for many years before getting my feet wet in the hallucinogenic waters. I do think that it stood me in good stead as I was quite experienced in dealing with altered states and was able to deal with being 180 degrees to reality quite well.

I've now taken several varieties of Psilocybin (Liberty Caps, Philosopher Stones, Cubensis and soon - Conifer Psilocybin) as well as Fly Agaric. At this point I guess I work with mushrooms about twice a year. Some I've had fresh, others dried. Dried mushies are never as potent as the fresh stuff. Similar to what people have said in that thread, there is a huge variety in strength of mushrooms, and sometimes you can just take a couple and be off your head.

However, when I take them I do so in ceremony, and have a least a basic ritual form - which includes setting up the space in a safe manner. Even if you view this purely as a pschological tool, it's a useful thing to do.

I view the various mushrooms as Plant Teachers and usually have long conversations with the fungus involved. Each trip I've had with the various mushrooms has been subtly (and sometimes radically) different - reflecting the temperment of the fungus itself.

My last trip was the most hallucinogenic I've ever experienced, and I have to say I was close to freaking out because reality was completly whipped away from me. Thankfully, I knew that I had to go with the flow and accept the experience for what it was. I knew that the worst thing possible would have been to give in to my fears, and instead I accepted them, and then put them to one side. It certainly reminded me that shrooms are not to be underestimated, and to take them lightly is to set yourself for a potentially bad trip.

I have the utmost respect for mushrooms and the amazing gift of insight they can bestow upon you. They are great if done in a social environment - as long as you're with friends you trust and you're all on the same wavelength.

Interestingly, I was "told" in my last trip that if I could handle that experience then I would be able to take peyote in the future. My feeling is that is a year or so away yet. But, one day...

you may want to grow your own mushrooms- picking them can be quite dangerous if you don't know the species very well. I suggest you check out PF Tek and the Shroomery, both online. Very reasonable, and they are reliable. I also find that there is something special about rituals using things you've cultivated yourself.

Just met a Guy tonight who is expecting to return with plenty shroom for me on Sunday/Monday. HOOORAHH

Personmally had some of the most revealing spiritual experiences on mushrooms. Comnnecting with my dragon soul etc.

Will post my experiences on these new batches. I have discovered a shop retailing grow kits (Mexicans), so if no joy with Guy, then I'll grow my own.

bpm77 thanks for the advice, and yes, of course, cultivating your own shrooms is a good way to go. However, I only pick mushrooms that I know are the correct ones, and generally when it comes to shrooms I'm working with the spirit of the plant while I'm picking so I'm not led astray. In fact, we've since discovered several species living in our garden!

I've also taken shrooms in Amsterdam and those have been very good experiences. It seems that shrooms are grown with care and attention there, and are generally "happy". Plus, you don't get any bad stuff.

The other thing to remember about shrooms - which I discovered the first time I took them - is that they want to be taken by people. (Which is why you should be careful, as bpm77 said, about being able to identify them) The way it was imparted to me is that it is only when imbibed by people that the Spirit of the Mushrooms can interact in that particular way. It's like by taking them you are activating their potential. I'm in the Terrence McKenna camp about Mushrooms, due to my conversations with them. I've been told that a person's brain is subtly rewired each time s/he take shrooms. I think it tends to alter your perspective slightly on a permanent basis. It's not too surprising; after having a mind-blowing or life-altering trip you just won't view the world in quite the same way afterwards.
