Comic Book Help

I'm doing an informational speech on comic books for my Oral Communications class. I would like to cover a brief history of comics from the introduction to Superman to Marvel's bankruptcy in the '90's, to the recent explosion of comic books into pop culture, and the wild popularity and sales of the Spider-Man film. [The title of my speech is "Splash Pages and Word Balloons: The Rise of Comic Books in Mainstream Pop Culture"]

I'm working on my out-line right now [I have to give it to the Prof. for inspection tomorrow] but my speech isn't due until the 15th of Nov. If anyone could possibly help me with finding a few things on-line, I would really appreciate it. In particular, I could really use pertinent sales figures from the afforementioned bankruptcy of Marvel to current times. Also, any key moments in comic history that you feel should be mentioned without doubt would be appreciated.

Thank you,
-Jared

Whoa. That's about sixteen different presentations, right there. I don't even know where to begin.

But, um, Watchmen was cool. Yeah.

There are a number of books out there charting comic booc history - or more accurately chunks of comic book history - as videodrome says there is a lot there. Unfortunately most of the best are currently out of print (though should be available through libraries)

David Kunzle's 2 volume history of the early evolution of comics is invaluable. I also have a personal soft spot for Roger Sabin's Adult comics; an introduction, (which looks at comics history from the late 19th century to the end of the 90s) although his comics, comix and graphic novels is riddled with oversimplifications and the occasional innacuracy...

more on this later...
