We've lost a legend.
The indisputable 'king of skiffle', Lonnie Donegan, passed away on Sunday morning (November 3rd) after a short illness. He was 71 and midway through a UK tour.

At it's best, Donegan's music was vital and energetic, a revelation in staid times. The British rock scene of the sixties was created by a generation of teenage skiffle fans, lured by the excitement Donegan's music was capable of arousing.

Donegan's first single, Rock Island Line sold over three million copies. He followed it with a long string of hits, including 'Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavour' and 'Puttin' On The Style'.

He will rightly be missed.

Ar, no!!

hmmm, that's a shame- can't say I'm too up to speed with skiffle, mind you- a genre that's passed me by.

I can remember the first time I heard "Rock Island Line". It sounded like all of the energy of table-cloth folk music had come together and out of it fell something that absolutely rocked.
In thinking about it that way I can begin to appreciate what it must have been like when he first appeared on the scene.

God bless him.

Has a respectful enough period passed to note the tour was the 'This Could Be The Last Time' tour?
