Chaos Magick Movie

Bear- All we need is someone to make a movie about a young guy who gets bullied and turns to chaos magick with a "thumping" nu-metal soundtrack.

I've been thinking of this. Most Chaos Magicians I've seen depicted in TV and Movies are evil. And the more traditional (Latin chanting, tome carrying magicians are the goodies.) I think all the trappings of those older traditions make then more cinematic.

I've been trying to come up with something similar to what Bear proposed (although I think he was joking) and all I can come up with is Harry Potter only slightly older and set in London as opposed to Hogswarts. He curses, drinks, and takes drugs. Oh and, there's a great magickal masturbating scene (Gryffindor circle jerk?)

So can anyone come up with something better?

Note: Even though I see Donnie Darko as very much the chaos magick movie. I meant something a little more self consciously magick.

Maybe it would work as a low budget indie thing, but I think you'd have a hard time selling it to producers & distributors. The uninititiated audience has to do too much work to grasp the concepts -- even your 'early adopters' would have to get past their D&D-derived anti-Chaos bias. Isn't DC still doing that Books of Magic series? That sounds a bit like what you're talking about, tho I only read the first series. Could be an easier sell if based on a comic.

Sort of a middle ground between Harry Potter and Hellblazer then? Sure it would work, even if everyone was in the dark about the specifics. "Why does he keep jerling off so much?" "And why does magic stuff happen right after he's done?"

Charge the sigils through ways other than wanking. Beautiful magickal sex with the tracing of sigils on skin ala Pillow Book. Extreme sports or stunts ala XXX or Jackass.

Fill the movie with things kids respond to, use the magick as a) subtext/structure and b) not just part of life, but a way of living; make it super modern and I think you'd have a hit.

(No topic abstract. Slap wristies.)

A chaos magick movie could be interesting. Since a lot of it is subjective, you could play with the idea that your central characters might be hallucinating, imagining, or inventing the whole thing-- keep the audience on their toes with confusing imagery/dream sequences, and then have one or other of the characters Scullying the whole thing.

Some of the more popular rituals would make great viewing, like the Vortex Rite. Mind you, there'd be copyright issues to sort out.

(Yeah, sorry about the lack of topic abstract!)

I know this depends on the type of movie you want to make but do you think this Chaos movie should have the usual array of demons and magical creatures like most fantasy flicks and tv shows or should it be mostly human characters? I mean, there could be an invisible sidekick servitor in the film who doesn't really do anything, you know, like props on stings, but can mess with probability and synchronicity and such. And the main character talks to it like a mad man.

possible preamble to a movie shot at least partly from the servitor's point of view... could make for some interesting visuals if ze turns out to have probability altering abilities. Like a rapidly looping scene, each repetition slightly different until ze settles on the desired outcome.

That sounds like something that would be in that Valis movie (from the novel, not an actual movie.)

A movie of VALIS (shudders)

I'm just reading "Confessions of a crap artist" by PKD and the style flips between the 3 main characters, with their very different views on the same situation and relationships. This style could work well.

Another approach is to have the main character be utterly insane, but having a really cool great life, then flip to other peoples views of them - mostly fear and pity - basically have the moral be that beauty is in the mind of the beholder. Possibly with a flashback to Emperor Norton.
