Good place to buy shoes in London?

OK, my DMs and my trainers let in more water than a boat hit beneath the water line, can anyone recommend places in the smoke that do good boots and shoes but at prices which won't entail me selling a kidney to afford?

Camden?

Try Greenhams in Isleworth if you want a pair of hardy boots. They aren’t too pricey but are aimed at workers, so you may be pushed for choice if you want non steel-toes.

Go for steel toes. Big steel toes. There's something very satisfying about walking around knowing that if you kick something, it'll almost certainly break.

Aren't steel toes designed so that if something heavy falls on them they slice your toes off cleanly for re-attachment rather than mangling them? When I had steel caps I used to walk about town constantly thinking about that. Was rather a relief when I stopped wearing them actually. Just a thought.

And I am in awe of your abstract-fu o flowered one.

Camden is probably the heart of the sun when it comes to DM's. For trainers I'm sure there is shop in Covent Garden that sells veggie trainers. Other than that, buy skate shoes. Not fashion wannabe skate shoes but the real deal. To begin with they are less globalizationally oriented and on top of that they are actually built to last and withstand a lot of punishment. Not nessecarily waterproof but good, strong, long lasting, non concience bothering and they look cool. Vans should top your list, Duffs should not.

And thank you for not having to read the post all over again in the abstract.

Camden's good for DM's and trainers but if you want to buy shoes for money Covent Garden is the only place to go in the world. You can get pretty shoes from the shop by Vidal Sassoon, you can get clumpy Euro shoes from the Natural Shoe Store on Neal Street and Buffalo's and ohmygod I love shoes!

I'd second the Natural Shoe Store. I bought a pair of square-toed biker boots (the kind with the steel rings on the sides) in the Glasgow branch some ten or eleven years ago. They've been resoled a couple of times since then but are going strong, and remain favourites.

Find some Blundstones. Anywhere you can. Your feets will thank you, though you won't quite be Camper elegant.

(Predictably enough)There's a shop in Camden that's like the holy grail of Converse .. they've got millions of different kinds!

Yay the abstract!

Uh... are men even allowed to wear Buffalo's? I like them, and stroke my chin at the prospect of them, but, uh... no man size big problem. and I live in fear of asking anyone anything ever, so it's not like I could find out the upper size limit...

I used to wear them and so did a lot of my male friends. But that was 5 years ago - can't stand the things now. Oh, the fickle ways of fahsharn.

I think men should wear buffalo's, leopard skin platform buffalo's, pink patent, electric blue! Honey, men can wear whatever they want, I'm waiting for the day when skirts become a thing for everybody.

Nah, the problem's to that they're girly, it's that my feet are size 12.

And wearing skirts freaks me out a bit. Weird... air... flows...

Twelve might be a bit big, kilts don't count and if you don't want the air wear some tights!!!!

So far then we have DM boots, a kilt and Diamante-patterned tights - so whats the top then?

A pretty red corset is begging to be used but I'm going to reject it. Bullet proof vest... those black things police wear as part of their riot gear.

I really don't have the figure for skirts, I make Corporal Klinger look like Liz Hurley, although perhaps something in the ankle length I might get away with... you didn't see me at SFD's farewell do did you?

how about replacing the kilt with something ankle-length and cyber-ish/urban? Something in plastic/pvc, maybe - long, with patch/velcro pockets - combat skirt-style?

Tere's lots of stuff like that where, as it's all held together with velcro straps you basically adjust the size yourself ... There's a cheesy clubwear shop on Tt.Court Road, called atomic, I think, which sells some surprisingly good stuff.

reckon you'd suit that kind of thing..

I'm acutally offended by the suggestion that I'd wear a kilt...

If you're not comfortable wearing a skirt, you could try hakama. Now used mainly in formal kimono or as part of the uniform for kendo and aikido, it's the traditional pant of the samurai.

Traditional information here.
Good picture of a man wearing a kimono with hakama. It looks like a skirt, but it'snot!
You can order some here or here or here which has crazy pinstripes and colours.
