The ones that come to mind are from Hong Kong - The Unotld Story, The Ebola Syndrome and the Men Behind the Sun films. And from Japan, Ichi The Killer is pretty close.
More info on what constitues 'available' would be helpful. All of those are available on DVD or VCD, but sometimes you have to know where to look.

The Guinea Pig films are a series of unrelated films from Japan with some pretty extreme horror content. The most famous has an old guy in a samurai outfit tying a girl to a bed, then torturing her extensively. There's no plot or reason, just an hour of torture. True Videodrome stuff, which, ironically, I'm not into. There's only a couple of them that are that extreme, but all fall into the 'socially unredeemed' category. Info and stills here/
They got famous when Charlie Sheen saw one of them and thought it was a snuff film. He contacted the Proper Authorities, who investigated and found that Charlie Sheen is an idiot. What I find interesting about them is that they're one of a small subset of films that are better, or more effective, when seen through crap bootlegs. The removal of detail that comes with a multi-generational VHS copy does these films a big favor, by obscuring the effects and making it look a lot more real, hence Charlie's reaction.
Now that they're out on DVD, it's plain to see that it's all fake, so I think their notoriety might actually fade a bit.
A friend in Boston (P) masters DVDs. He does all sorts of weird stuff, and another friend was telling me how P had been approached to master these crazy horror films that no other company would touch. He was going to do it. I asked if they were the Guinea Pig films, and it turns out they were. Silly. |
