Well now,

Going to Amsterdam next month bit of last minute thing, only going for a weekend so I thought I'd ask here, since your all a well travelled lot What should I do, what's the one thing I should check out?

Have to add that coach travel is very cheap, why didn't anyone tell me £36 return.

The only weekend I spent in Amsterdam was years ago and I got obsessed with the cat rescue barge on the Singel canal. Give a donation and wander around hugging all the moggies. Heaven! - although probably not the sort of thing you're after.

Depends what you're into, really. Grab yourself a Rough Guide, and don't be afraid to ask the locals-- most of them seem to smoke in thirty-five different languages. My don't-miss tip would be the Van Gogh museum, but I realise that might not be everyone's cup of tea.

Hi Bear.

I was just there a couple of days ago so can proffer a little bit of advice, perchance. I didn't get the coach but have heard that it's a looooong trip so be warned!

As for touristy stuff, the Van Gogh museum and Anne Frank's house are both good. There's a fairly long line at the latter unless you go reasonably early. And you can do hour-long canal cruises for 6 euros which are pretty good value. There are a couple of stands near the station as you walk down the main drag. They go every hour or so.

And just walk around; it's a beautiful place. Everywhere outside the red light district is great, and there are coffee shops scattered about everywhere, though they're mostly in the red light district. As far as I know they're all pretty similar in terms of price and value, but some have different atmospheres. I went to the Bulldog (in the red light district) which was playing some excellent hard house so that suited me. And they have menus for hash and pot and give you free papers or lend you a bong if that's your preference. All easy and straight forward, so I didn't feel like too much of a tourist.

And there are some good bars and clubs around too. There are some cool ones a street or two behind the supermarket (turn right at Dam Square as you're walking down from the station. Can't remember any more specifically than that, and I was a bit pissed off that when the club shut at 5 there was nothing open in the whole damn city, on a Saturday night. Party town my arse.

As for hostels, none of them are that great compared to everywhere else I've been, and they're not cheap either, but if you just need somewhere to sleep when you're spannered, then no problem. Bob's Hostel is ok (turn right at Dam Square and walk through till you hit another main road and turn right down that and it's on your left). The Bulldog is ok too but the staff are fuckers (turn left at Dam Square and go till you hit the first canal then turn left and you'll see it (next to the coffee shop I mentioned). Can't be any more specific without a map unfortunately. I've heard that the Kabul is prettty good as well.

And if you're pushed for time, it's pretty easy to do all of the above in a day or two. Touristy stuff in the morning, coffee shop in the afternoon. Simple. And everyone speaks English too.

And take a frickin' rain coat and warm clothes. I couldn't wait to get back to England for some nice weather. No word of a lie.

You would not be wise to do any of the things we did on our last trip over, Bear, but we had some straight friends with us for the first few days and we all enjoyed the canal boat trip. Mind, we were very stoned, which meant we didn't do half the stuff we meant to thereafter. Easy to get more out of it much faster than usual with some of the exceptionally fine skunk in the coffee houses, even if you're fairly habituated to what goes around over here.

Vlaamse frites are the undoubted highlight of a visit to Amsterdam though. Particularly for an expatriate Scot who just might be a connoisseur of good chips.

We had a really good time at a club called Transbuddha off the Oudeburgwaal. Probably metamorphosed by now though. Hashheads lolling about contentedly downstairs (me and Hana_bi) whilst Ganesh and Mrs Hana_bi got down and dirty upstairs with the eccieheads.

Hard not to have a good time but Loomis is right about warm clothes. Built the place right in the middle of the North Sea and bloody cold at this time of year. Odd, the Dutch, but really friendly and rather admirable folk.

DON'T go to a bar/cafe called (I think)- "The Other Place"... last time I went to Amsterdam we saw it from outside, went our separate ways and decided to meet there later... 'twas full of Nazis. NOT, repeat, NOT, a conducive atmosphere to smoking. (Course, it may have just been a bad night... but I'm avoiding the place next time I go.)

bjacques is probably the best person to answer you on this one, what with living there and stuff.

All good suggestions which have all been noted, to be honest though I imagine due to the company I'm going with the weekend will be one long blur, but I'll look for these places in any moments of clarity

My suggestion, if you want to do non-blur stuff, is to give yourself the first day to do it, get stuff done before heading off into the skunkfunk. Amsterdam's a beautiful city, just wandering about is lovely... would recommend the Museum of Modern Art, if that's your thang - a great collection.... and as a fun stoned thing, the flower market....

Oh, and check out De Dampkring, if you're smoking but aren't yet a stereotypically wasted Eengleeesh - very chilled and more 'local'.... Oh, and a gay place called, I think, The Other Side...

Oh and check this out : Coffeeshop Etiquette. Good advice.

And second zo's point about potency, all the stuff you'll get there is way stronger than pretty much anything you'll've ever had, so be careful.

and jeesus, just noticed your mention of Bob's, Loomis, which is legendary among art history grads of my uni. This because the degree involved a trip to amsterdam to check out the Rubens collections, thus several of my tutors have been staying there since about 1970, and regard the place as a second home...

Yep, Trance Buddha was good (and features in Irvine Welsh's 'Porno' - but don't let that put you off). I'd also recommend a club called The Cockring - partly for the balloons of nitrous oxide they sell behind the main bar, and partly because I liked the name. You'd be extremely popular there, Bear, even before you tell 'em your name...

*Guffaw*

There is a coffeeshop near KanaalStraat, can't remember the name but it is wonderful there. I don't smoke but my friends did, so we used to go there for a nice atmosphere -- I'll search for the precise street name.

Hm. What about Cafe Reality, a nice gay cafe/club serving indiginous music amongst a crowd of, erm, indiginous people. Smoking there's totally okay, my then-boyfriend did it all the time.

Entre Nous, I just loved, which is near Rembrandt Plein.

Well I stayed at Bob's and the Bulldog. Does that make me more special or less special? Do I get to trump anybody?

One thing that worked really well going over to A'dam was that we booked our accommodation online before we went. Even booked the room we wanted. Meant we could shop around for a good deal and a good view, still staying fairly central, without trudging about lugging big bags. They took my credit card number but didn't charge anything till we squared up at the end. Saved a lot of hassle. Lots of handy sites that will give you the the lowdown, via google.

I went last December and made all my proper plans to see museums and such, but once I got there I was so awed by the atmosphere (never having been to Europe before) and so high the whole time that I spent my time wandering around (particularly from coffeehouse to coffeehouse). I can't give locations for these places, but you can find them in most guides or online - by the way, am I the only person who had a REALLY hard time not getting lost in Amsterdam? Maybe it was the weed, but...anyway: - Global Chillage was cool, this bright ambient music playing place and I also really liked Tweedy's, which had these cool train compartment seats and looked out onto this church and the Vondelpark... Now I want to go back.

The warm clothes and raincoat advice is important too! Even with the temps in the 50s (F) and many layers of clothing, it was FREEZING at times.

What about various strains of smoke? My favorites were Northern Lights (just really freakin' strong) and White Widow (this was the first thing I smoked after getting off the plane at like 7 am - I would take a hit and feel an IMMEDIATE rushing in my fingers and toes followed slightly later by the intense high).

Check out the Torture Museum. It used to be on Damrak, but the web tells me they've moved to Singal 449. Good place to go if you have one or two hours to kill. Cheap and sufficiently creepy.

Well that was fun, I think Thanks for all the tips people, in the end though I didn't really see much but it was a fun weekend (well apart from the journey which was a killer) But yeah thumbs up for Amsterdam and also the cafe called Kuil for nice vibe and a microscope, how can you go wrong with a microscope... Hopefully I'll be able to go back soon - Barbemeet in Amsterdam maybe?

Make sure you have somewhere to stay BEFORE you get there...
Leidzeplein area is the best area by far (not so many stag parties, unlike Dam square area). Very handy for museums, galleries, Milkweg and Paradiso nearby, and loads of lovely coffeshops esp. Noon and Rokerij. Have to admit i'm very jealous...

I really liked the Tropenmuseum (the Tropical museum). They tried to make it a more sensory experience with smells and noises as well as just stuff to look at. And the cafe has weird beers from strange climes, or baked goods from different countries.

I lodged about 10ft down the road from there. And right opposite a place called "Dirty Dicks" (NO apostrophe). There were sailors outside. In leather pants...
