Anyone here from Rhode Island?

For some reason every forum I ever join it seems I'm the only person from this (tiny) state. I'm not sure how many people from RI would come to a site like this... Of all the people I've ever encountered in the state only one knew what "The Invisibles" were or who Grant Morrison was (though I'm sure there must be more out there).

We never get got bands around here either. But NIN was in town years ago... and Sonic Youth will be playing in Providence next month. Yay!!!

After reading Lovecraft for the first time this spring, I definitely have to re-visit Rhode Island. Just think! In your little state (that has a fun history of tolerance and liberation, doesn't it?) you have the centres of ALL EVIL! Woo!

The tourist board should adopt this campaign: From gibbous masses of unspeakable evil to Miskatonic U, toad people and Things on the doorstep, Rhode Island has it all!

Your state was quite nice as I remember it...

You never get bands there? Lupos has great shows All The Time. And fucking Lightning Bolt are from RI.

LIGHTNING BOLT!!!

Yeah, Load and Death Wish records both seem to hail from Providence, and the output of both is almost unbelievably good (if you like the sound of psychotic hardcore bands who sound like they've been recorded on a $10 tape recorder whilst playing inside a jumbo-jet engine .. and who doesn't?).

And, well, we all know who else came from Providence, don't we?
I mean, who the fuck cares what else does or doesn't happen there - it's Lovecraft's town!

Actually, for above reasons it ranks pretty highly on my list of coolest places in the world..

Vid beat me to the punch - Lupos in Providence always has excellent bands playing there. All the times I've been in Rhode Island, I've been in the rich coast towns, primarily Westerly - it's nice there, but I can see why you might be frustrated. I can't remember seeing anything like a comics shop anywhere there, but there must be some in Providence, if just for the RISD and Brown kids.

And Rhode Island isn't evil because of Lovecraft, it's evil because it's one of the most corrupt states in the United States, and has a ridiculously high concentration of mobsters.

It is certainly a pain in the ass that everything good in RI is in Providence, but since the state's so small, just steal a car and you're fine.

And for comics, Providence boasts the southern spin-off store of The Million Year Picnic.

Well, I prefer experimental electronic music to hardcore, and there isn't much of a scene regarding the former. Yet.

Yes, Lovecraft could very well be one of the sole cool things about the state. I really should visit his grave one day.

Occ. I meet someone interesting though. After I read Charles Ander's "The Lazy Crossdresser" I e-mailed him/her and told him how much I liked the book and mentioned there were no cross-dressing resources listed for RI. He replied back shortly and told me about a spoken-word show he would be doing in Providence at the start of September. I went and actually got to talk to him, which was cool but a little intimidating.

Oh yeah, Wesley Willis did a live show last may too.

Depending on what part of the huge land parcel of "experimental electronic" you're into, there's some fun to be had. Many of the artists with listings on Boston Noise do regular shows in Providence, often at non-traditional venues like the Dirt Palace. That's a tough scene to get happening, because there is no money in it. None, not a penny. So everything that happens is done by force of will. That being the case, it's good to get involved, even if some of the scene isn't exactly to your liking...

Funny you mention Boston Noise, it's a great site and my own band was supposed to be put on there... but before I could send them an MP3 I had computer troubles and never got around to it. I'll try again soon.

Yeah, that's a solid site with good info. It was started in part by a good friend, and he put a lot of work into it. I didn't make very good use of it when I still lived in the area, sadly.

I was just in RI to see the Violent Femmes at Lupo's.

I think I might vist Lovecraft's grave on Halloween.
