The Return Of Rothkoid

Or, alternately, their label could just have a lazy PR manager.

My friend just got a vinyl copy of Yanqui, and for anyone who's interested, there's an extra five(?) minute track stuck on at the end made up of George Bush ranting samples and fuzzy noises. I'm jealous.

I was hoping that George Bush recording would make the CD. They used it last time we saw them live and it was fab, really effective, the voice recognisable but detourned, spouting the linguistic equivalent of white noise, interspersed with rabid mechanical applause/crowd noise. May have to pick up the vinyl version too, then.

Well, first impressions are that Yanqui will definitely be a work disc - something that can co on a seamless repeat, like Isis' Oceanic or either of the last two boredoms records. This is good. I like the swells and ebbs in each track, and there's more rock than expected (what's that double-kick doing in the first track?). Will continue to listen, and try to form a more coherent impression.

Or not.

It's more likely to be a floor tom with the EQ way down knowing this band.

I honestly thought the "!" was after the "G". Me bad.

Right. So. I thought this was as good a place as any for the bad news*.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor call it a day, make vague gestures toward using music or art to express political opinions, and officially resign, exhausted.

* While it's bad news in the sense that it's dashed my hopes for a new GY!BE record, it's been so long that any news regarding GY!BE is regarded more with a fond, "So there you are!" than any stronger emotion. Still. I always preferred GY!BE to all those Silver Mountains. There was an energy that could've moved mountains if the sound of the latter hadn't been so much more tired and subdued. I've yet to find a band that can pull off crescendo-bliss with the same kind of intensity as Antennas to Heaven.

So long and godspeed, Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

Ah, or, you know, not.

"The Drowned in Sound thing is a misquote, I'm in the middle of dealing with it now. It's true, Godspeed hasn't existed for years, we've been on permanent hiatus since 2002. If and when we do call it quits permanently, it won't be because of the Iraq war."

Oops. So scratch that "dissolved band" and mark it back up to "permanent hiatus."

Really gotta stop relying on these user submitted news megasites, me.

Our Lady Has Left the Building
06:44 / 13.04.08
If anyone hasn't got it already, one of the rare early Godspeed tracks, 'Sunshine + Gasoline' has been stuck up here.

Alex's Grandma
01:51 / 14.04.08
Watching the Arcade Fire's career arc must be hard for them, really.

Eek! A Freek!
18:50 / 17.04.08
Well, at least there's a new Silver Mt. Zion album...
