A Duck in a Noose?

As much as I try to avoid increasing Slate's readership any further, this article hits most of the points of a question I've been asking myself. What was all that trash about ducks in nooses? What about the calls for money? Is this just madness, obfuscation, or is there more here than meets the eye? That's what Qalyn says, but what about you?

This could probably be grafted into the 'serial killers' thread concerning the sniper but I would imagine the sniper's various requests and the reasons behind them, either for sincere purposes or just to jerk the cops' chain, will come to light eventually.

Mm, I thought I was extracting one little issue to be focused on, but if no one wants to discuss it, I'll just sit here biting my nails.

Over in the thread on this in the Magick, Ms. Carnival supplied this:

"The duck reference is apparently from a folk tale in which a rabbit tries to hunt a duck with a noose, but the duck wins out and flies off dragging the rabbit behind him."

Now, as for what that means, beats me. In a general sense, he could have meant that whatever cause he is supporting is going to win regardless of his capture. If he meant a specific sense, perhaps there are other snipers ready to continue once he's been picked up. Or in the I'm-a-regular-loony sense, he might just be saying, "Go ahead, arrest me, I'll destroy you from the inside, I'm Hannibal Lecter etc., etc."

Given the self-aggrandizing tone so far ("I am God," scary Death tarot card, "your children aren't safe anywhere"), I'd figure on the third.

As I understand it, it's an old folktale (Cheroke? (sp?))

A rabbit goes hunting for a duck with a noose. He gets the noose around the duck's neck (hence the reference) and thinks that he has caught the duck. Then the duck flies away, taking the rabbit with it. Hence, the rabbit doesn't have the duck, the duck has the rabbit.

The fact that this reference came right before the guy was caught has really made me wonder. I think I'll be waiting a week or so before agreeing that this is really over, and the this guy isn't just a patsy.

Uncle Remus is now wearing the strap-on.

Goofy bragging led the police to catch this clown.

He wanted the police to potray themselves as the rabbit, but a day later, he's pinched.

Thank God the sniping maybe over.

But surely if the noose had been tied properly, the duck would be strangled in mid-air?

Actually that would fit in with tSuibhne's theory, wouldn't it, because the police would have been incompetent had th3eir 'noose' not worked.
