Care for a round of Earls?

This will no doubt be a very sad follow on to the cheese thread but in the interests of making my lunch a little more entertaining, what can you reccomend as a damn good sandwich.

One of my longstanding favourites and somewhat difficult to obtain is Beef, Stilton & Coleslaw. For best reulsts this should be a sub oriented sandwich made with tender and roast beef that is a little rare. The stilton should be meduim matured and the coleslaw should be creamy yet sharp to the taste. Salad is optional but not required.

Gerald, Earl Sandwich? I think you mean "Care for a rounds of Lords?".

...on which subject, Brie and roast beef is particularly appetising.

John Montagu (1718--1792), The Fourth Earl of Sandwich, was First Lord of the Admiralty under both Henry Pelham and Lord North (1748--51, 1771--82). He was also known as "Jemmy Twitcher", a nickname given by alleged association with pirates. He was a notorious gambling man who would often go from pub to pub in London on gambling marathons. To satisfy his hunger, while continuing to gamble, he would order slices of meat between two pieces of bread. In 1762, this combination became known as "the sandwich".In 1827, the sandwich was introduced to America in a cookbook by Elizabeth Leslie. A recipe for ham sandwiches was suggested as a main dish. The sandwich became very popular in the American diet when soft white bread was introduced in the early 1900's. The sandwich of today provides us with a simplistic, filling meal that is within a sensible price range.

Tomato and mustard on brown bread, lots of salt.

The shop across from here does gorgeous smoked tofu, sweetcorn relish and sprout sandwiches. In fact, you've made me want one right now.

Baguette. Butter. Fried bacon. Lightly fried, gooey-but-crisp-edged brie. Cranberry sauce. Dribble everywhere. Genius.

Also: Stilton, Bacon, Red Onion, all in a ciabatta. That's pretty perfect too, and doesn't feel like eating a heart attack.

Tea Boy: Would that be the same John Montagu who was first Lord of the Admiralty? Ah, but who am I to match my (admittedly meagre) knowledge of food etymology with the power of Google and an amateur sandwich webpage?

IT could so easily be either.

To clear this up: the Earl of Sandwich would frequently have been referred to (informally), and addressed as, 'Lord Sandwich'. The fact that he was first Lord of the Admiralty has bugger all to do with it.

Umm...yes. My last post was a touch sarcastic. Sorry. No offense meant.

Back on subject, how enamoured are people with seafood? I think prawns go pretty well with most things, sandwich-wise, and I have an inexplicable fondness for mussels.

Thank you, Kit-Kat. Can we get back to tasty sandwich fillings now?

Good bread, mature cheddar, red onions, avocado, garlic mayo, black pepper.

Um-mmmmmm

aaaha. if we're getting specialist, there's a pub here with an attached bakery, does 'sandwiches' which are fillings baked into the middle of big rolls - my fav is veggie sausage, mushrooms and mustard.

hubba.

I've been introduced to the shrimp salad sandwich in Baltimore, which is a much more appetising affair than the British prawn sandwich, given that the shrimps in question could beat up your dad.

Darn. Now you've gone and made me miss the Manhattan Bagel Bakery on Seven Sisters road. Not only do they make primo bagels (not quite up to Brick Lane standard, but not bad), but they also do these falafels-in-a-torpedo things with lashings of salad. Yum.

Other top sandwich: really mature cheddar, brown bread, and bramble jelly. Trust me. Jam+Cheese has nothing on this earth to touch it. (Apart from maybe Asparagus).

Warm roast beef and a slice of Swiss, just starting to get melty, on lightly-toasted wheat bread, one slice spread thickly with honeymustard, the other with Bookbinder's horseradish sauce, with generous dashes of black pepper.

Few sandwiches cannot be improved by the addition of horseradish: its judicious application in any mayonnaise-based sandwich filling--tuna or egg salads, in particular--elevates even such humble fare. And Bookbinder's sauce is a revelation: creamy, slightly sweet--the perfect vehicle for Amoracia rusticana.

Also: the traditional post-Thanksgiving sandwich of thick-sliced turkey and stuffing on white bread smeared with cranberry sauce.

My tastes are simple, filthy prole that I am.

Mmm, horseradish... a hot salt beef sandwich with horseradish, gherkins, tomato and lettuce, on some nice wholemeal bread...

Ah, the three greatest sandwiches ever: 1. roast beast, turkey, and ham on pretty much anything with swiss cheese, horseradish, and honey mustard. 2. A bagel (preferably plain, but to each their each.) with smoked turkey, chive cream cheese, and alfalfa sprouts. 3. Smoked turkey (yes, again) with brie and thinly sliced green apples, toasted.

mmmmmm.

Whole wheat bread, a ripe tomato sliced thin, some romaine lettuce and either Walkers Wood Solomon Gundy (if you like spicy) or, milder but better, Dixie brand smoked fish spread. (Made with mayo, mustard, smoked kingfish and a handful of other, unidentified spices by Miss Dixie, a Palm Beach County food legend. Accept no substitutes.)

If we're talking sauces for sandwiches, Old El Paso hot taco sauce works fantastically with cheese or ham, with or without salad. It makes my mouth cum.

Cheese. Ham. Pastrami. Firm tomato. Gherkins. Perhaps a little grain mustard. Some lettuce. Light toasting is optional.

Oh yes.

I may need one today.
